Advise for good Android/Windows phone

I have been using iPhone for last 3 years. never used android phone. After the big disappointment form Apple announcing iPhone 5c and 5s with ridiculously high price, I would like to switch to Android/windows phones. Any recommendation?

Sony/Samsung/Nokia?

All I want is to have smooth touch screen like iPhone. I don't like lagging like I experienced in Nokia N8.

can spend $5 on $50 cap. or $500-$600 outright

  • Windows or Android would purely be personal choice considering total different interface and apps availability on both platform.

Why don't you try your hands on both OS at local telstra/optus store?

    • good idea. I will go tomorrow to Telstra shop and put my hands on different phones. I searched online and found some good reviews of Samsung Galaxy S4, Nexus 4 and Sony Xperia Z1.

Yes give a try in the shops to see which one you prefer (Android or WinPhone). And these are the deals posted on OzBargain:

Not really sure about $500-$600 outright (those would be top-end Android phone range). However for ~$300 you should be able to get either Nexus 4 16GB or Nokia Lumia 820/920 or HTC 8X.

  • I don't own a Windows Phone, so I can't comment on that, but I have used both an iPhone and currently has the Samsung Galaxy S3. I noticed the S3 is slightly laggy compared to the iPhone 4S. Although the lag is very slight, that is enough to annoy a lot of current iPhone users. The other good thing about the iPhone is the keyboard, I have to admit the keyboard is more accurate on the iPhone compared to the S3, although a lot of people I know use Swype on Android phones, which is you enter words by swiping your keyboard rather than tapping on keys.

If I were in the market now for a new phone now, I would wait for the Note 3, otherwise Nexus 4 is a good buy now, if you can find stock. But that is just me.

Wouldn't touch windows phone with a barge pole - they have been pushing and pushing - but it's still a market failure, majoring on UI that's a dud.

If I were you I'd be waiting to see what the Nexus 5 brings. With the near confirmed rumour of an LG G2 derivative, the main question that remains is price. A price level that matched the Nexus 4, but with the 4G/Snapdragon 800/Full HD goodness - and frankly there's nothing out there that would match it.

Oh, and get over the apple 'lag' moaning. The iphone cheats to appear to be responsive, but the reality is in performance terms the android phones are at least as responsive, it's just they don't stop everything because the user shifted their finger 3mm.

Windows Phone I would buy HTC 8X as bang for buck it's a winner; if you can handle the bulk the Lumia 920 as the camera blows all the competition out of the water at that price range ($380~).

Android I would go for Nexus 4, then going up the price bracket to the Xperia Z.

  • I've never had a Windows phone. What are readers' experiences? How do you use it differently from Android or iPHONE? What are any perceived advantages? Can you interface it in any way with your Windows computer use?

Unless you want the latest and greatest, you can't really go wrong with a Nexus 4, especially at the current prices. Supplied by Google, guaranteed updates, stock Android with no extraneous stuff bolted on.

Just buy it outright and get on a PAYG plan like Aldi for true Ozbargain bargain-ness.

  • Buy the LG Optimus G from JB. I've been using it for the past few months and it has been an amazingly feature packed and speedy phone. Should still be $388.
