Genuine or Fake Sandisk MicroSD

Hi All,

I purchased one from the deal below and received it today.

My 8gb MicroSD didn't arrived in retail packaging so I can't tell its authenticity. The 8gb card is enclosed in a clear plastic case and an adapter. I was told there are a lot of fake Sandisk around so I'm interested to find out if anyone knows how to tell the difference between a genuine and a fake one. Also, is there a way to tell if it is a class 4 card as per seller's claim without the retail packaging?

Thanks heaps…

  • From google search : http://martybugs.net/articles/fakesandisk.cgi (This is for compact flash card, but the concept should be same, give a call to sandisk and verify). Does the transfer rates matches class 4 speed?. (Like copy big file from harddisk to it via micro SD card reader, use teracopy if you use windows xp to see the transfer speed).

I bought a 2gb micro sd longtime back from same seller, no serial numbers on it. But it came with covers though i still doubt on it :-).

  • To be honest, with the fakes going around, it can be very very hard to tell. If you want that extra security and peace of mind, go to a decent reputable retailer to buy your card.

Sometimes prices can be too good to be true, but I'd like to think most of us on OzBargain always live in hope :)

    (That's why we're here, aren't we?)

  • I would think shoppingsquare is more reputable than Ebay sharks. What I find odd is that the microSD card didn't come in sealed retail packaging which can give clues to the authenticity. I'll try out mawinmawin's suggestion to confirm if it's Class 4 speed coz this was the deal breaker for me.

  • Even retail packaging doesn't guarantee you the genuine article. If your card has a serial number you can call Sandisk to verify if it is genuine.

Opinions on Shopping Square seem to be a bit mixed on various internet Forums. I bought a couple of memory cards from them last year. One passed the serial number verification from Sandisk. The other was less than $10 and is used in a digital picture frame so I didn't really care. Both have worked without problems so far
