      You would be hard pressed to find a retail version now that didn't have a high FW. I think there are hard wired mods only now that work for above 3.55 FW - ie opening up and connecting to the Motherboard directly.

      (Fyi they are on 4.6x now I think)

      softmod or hardmod will not work.. there are however a couple of ODEs (Optical Drive Emulator) coming to market / already on the market - which will work on these consoles.

      An ODE is basically a Bluray emulator, which allows you to load ISO images from a USB stick or hard drive. I imagine it would be around $100 for the device? I have no real basis for that thought though, just a hunch of what the market would pay.

      note: I do not sell, nor do I have anything to do with any developers or sellers of these devices. Probably lookin on any of the PS3 sites such as psx-scene.com, ps3crunch.net or similar would find definative information and news. The benefit with an ODE is that I SUSPECT it would allow you to be online, which the softmods and USBmods WILL NOT allow you to do.

      Yes, but it would also take up basically the entire hard drive after installation. If you bought this console, you'd want to upgrade the hard drive to something bigger.

      Seriously, I just slapped a 750gig drive in my 120gig PS3slim for around $85 because I ran out of space on mine after getting PS+. Insanely easy to do, especially if you are starting from a blank slate and don't have to back up data which can take a while.
