Epson XP-400 A4 Wireless Inkjet Multifunction $50 @ Officeworks

80

Just spotted this on the front page of Officeworks website for $89. Clicked on the link and it is priced @ $50.

I am in the market for a new printer and want wireless. I have a bulky HP that I was looking at getting a print server to use with it for the same price as this printer.

The reviews I have read say that this is great for a personal printer which is what I am after and the dimensions are quite small so it can be placed in a wardrobe or cupboard out of site.

Take these reviews with a grain of salt as they are from the Epson website http://www.epson.com.au/products/multifunctional/ExpressionH… but there are also some favourable reviews from the Apple forum http://store.apple.com/au/reviews/H9671X/A/epson-expression-…

My own, admittedly aged, experience with Epson inkjets is that they waste a LOT of ink 'cleaning' themselves.

I have heard that as well but an eBay search shows they are among the cheapest ink cartridge replacements around.

      • Yep they just seem to drink the ink. My Epson prints look like rubbish. Slow as hell.
Also if the yellow ink runs out etc I have to replace otherwise I can't print at all, even if I want to print black!

        Maybe this will be better…

  • Anyone know of a wireless IJ or laser multifunction that can scan remotely? (abit pointless I know as you have to go over to the unit to place the item to scan, but just like to find out…)

    • I have a Lexmark Pro4000 that scans and sends the scanned image/document remotely to my laptop via the WiFi connection if that's what you mean?

    • Brother Networked Multifunctions will do this. They can either post to a network share or a pc with the Brother software installed. I recently set one up for a business.

  • Don't buy an epson without using a ciss. The regular need to use or head clean to stop blocks will finish your ink cartridges in no time.

    • Don't buy an epson without using a ciss. The regular need to use or head clean to stop blocks will finish your ink cartridges in no time.

      That applies to all inkjets.
CISS are quite an expensive investment unless you go with the generic ones direct from china (i.e. not Australian resellers like MIR or Rihac), just get ebay ink cartridges ($2.50 each, high capacity 3rd party are able to pump out 250 pages+, source: I have this printer, the XP-400 is the rebadged Epson Stylus NX430, only difference is the ink cartridge number, i.e. they must have updated the chips on the ink cartridges.)
To prevent the need for head cleans just print at least once every 2 weeks.

      • I have 3x HPs 5510 using the 564XL ink cartridges and they use ink like crazy! It needs to be cleaned often and it uses lots of ink. Even for simple printing, the printers seem to pour out more ink than other printers I've had - the page appears wet after printing. I've switched to refillable 564XL cartridges, but need to keep refilling them. I was thinking that Epson would be better but it doesn't appear so from your comments. Are there any printers out there you would recommend that use less or reasonable amounts of ink?

        • I think they'd be the same amount, you'd have to look at the minimum amount of picolitres as specified by the manufacturer. For me, I managed to pump out 285 b&w pages with a single 3rd party high-yield ink cartridge (18ml) from ebay, that cost me $2.50 at the time.

I prefer Epson's piezo-printheads, because it effectively pulses out the ink rather than use heat to spit ink out as with thermal printheads. It just means that it wouldn't matter with regards to the quality of the ink (no matter where you source it from), if it's liquid, it won't clog up the printhead, where as with other thermal printheads, there is a very slim chance that 3rd party ink MAY have a chance of screwing up when they're being spitted out using heat. But that's just me, I'm sure this may be negligible, and to be fair, all I do is print out lecture slides for uni. I leave the high quality photo prints to the cheap deals that come on here every now and then.

For all inkjets you MUST print frequently, at least once every two weeks or the printhead's residual ink will thicken and form clogs at the printhead, regardless of the brand. Just print SOMETHING, and you won't need to clean it. If indeed it becomes clogged, instead of filling up the ink pads, just waste the ink and try to unclog the printhead by printing a specific colour, like a whole colour page or so.

  • I had an epson nx125, it's refill cartridges came with 10ml of ink in them at $20 a pop. $2000/L!!! Needless to say I don't buy them anymore and the generic ones could only contain 20ml/50ml and wouldn't last long at all. I didn't have any choice to get a different printer. Settled on Brother HL2132 from officeworks, it can be refilled by the user with a modified cartridge using an ink bottle. Haven't needed to buy another cartridge yet and I've owned it at least 5x longer.

  • Got this model from Hardly Normal Brisbane CBD store shutdown sale with Epson cashback in May….costed me 48$ after cashback….setup was a breeze….got it up and running in 10 mins…..have had no complaints and works perfectly…..prints from my iPhone, iPad and laptop over wi-fi so didn't have to buy USB cable (not included in box)…the setup can be completed over wi-fi as well….I read the reviews before buying and also discovered that this is the only model of Epson inkjet that Apple sells on its store….took the plunge hoping Apple has some quality control in place at least for third party products :)

      • Delivery by OW isn't free.
Ebay link is cheaper if you don't want to drive
OW is cheaper if you live near one.

        • And are also open later making it easier to get to OW if you work full time during the week.

eBay you also have to wait for delivery.

    • Thanks, saves me time and $ by not driving!

  • Now I feel like an idiot. I purchased an XP-100 from eBay (brand new, no wireless, no warranty) for $15

    • Well if you didn't need wireless, that's fine for your purpose?

      • Wanted wireless, hate having to plug the usb cable..like the OP, had to visit the library for printouts, got fed up, purchased the first decent deal on eBay.
