  • Ordered. Thanks OP

  • Quality? I don't know how many adapters I've bought like this (probably 10-15) but the micro USB end often ends up failing with these sort of cheap cables/adapters.

I know USB on the go (micro to USB).

But what is this for? example of usage?

    • That's exactly what I am thinking too. What devices and their cables come with mini-USB male out?

      • Both mini-USB and micro-USB connectors support USB on-the-go. They use an extra pin in the connector, which is why mini and micro connectors have five contacts, compared to the full-size USB connector with only four.

On-the-go is widely used in tablet PCs. You can connect the tablet to a PC, whereupon the tablet will look like a USB "device" to the PC. You can also purchase an adaptor cable which will let you plug a USB memory stick (or some other USB devices) into the exact same USB port on your tablet, whereupon the tablet will look like a USB "host" and talk to the USB memory stick/USB device you have just connected.

Here is a typical adaptor cable, USB micro to full-size USB female:

        • I don't quite understand your explanation Russ. I know of cable with male micro-USB and female USB, I got one myself which allow my Samsung S3 phone to connect to my USB stick, so I can read media files off the USB stick. But what about this cable which has male micro-USB and female mini-USB? What are the two typical devices that can be used to connect?

        • Read reply from MiniMoo below.

It's simply an adapter that converts a mini USB into a micro USB. An S3 for example uses and micro USB. My old iMate 8502 used a mini USB. With one of these adapters, I can use the old iMate 8502's cable and charger.

It connects a mini USB cable to a device with a micro USB. That's why it's so short.

        • Ah, now I understand what you are asking.

I use a similar adapter to charge my (micro USB) mobile phone from my PC, using the adaptor and an old 30cm USB-to-mini-USB cable. I like it because it is short, I don't have a snarl of cable on my desk. Most people have a left-over mini-USB-to-USB cable lying around somewhere, perhaps from an old USB hub or card reader.

You could also use this if you replace the GPS in your car, and the old GPS had a mini-USB while the new GPS has a micro-USB? Just keep the old charging cable in place and use this adaptor.

        • Shonky, if I can remember to bring this micro-USB to mini-USB cable to my mate's place to recharge my S3, I might as well bring my S3's original charger and cable.

        • Well that's completely not the point of this adapter.

    • Put it on an old micro USB charger or cable so you can plug it in a new device which has micro USB.
