PlayStation Vita Wi-Fi with Killzone Mercenary $188 Big W One Day Sale (Sat. 9th Nov.)

1090

EDIT: Here are more pages of the Catalogue: http://imgur.com/a/7kj0q

Got my hands on the Big W one day sale brochure for next Saturday. This deal stuck out to me. Particularly when posts about $215 Vitas delivered with no game seem to be garnering interest. If you're willing to duke it out with others on the day, this is a pretty great price!

Couldn't find the catalogue on the website, so i took a photo of it. Sorry for the crappy quality!

  • great deal

  • Any other games in the catalogue?

    • +2

Not the one day sale one. The Regular Christmas cataolgue has a few though. Starting Nov. 7:

      GTA V: $68
      COD Ghosts: $68
      12 gig PS3: $178
250 gig 360 with Arkham Origins and Battlefield 4: $268

There's some more stuff too. That's the big stuff though.

  • i hope there is enough stock…

  • I wonder if this is the revised version of the vita.

    • Based on the speakers in the catalogue it's not the new slim version.

    • I doubt it, that hasn't been released anywhere yet?

      • It has been released in Japan. I saw on a site you can get it imported for about $214 (can't remember the site though - it was a site specific to Japanese game imports)

        • +1

          PlayAsia

    • The slim sounds like a budget version of the original according to this article: http://www.t3.com/reviews/sony-ps-vita-slim-review

      • It's a minor refresh that swaps the OLED for LCD, now charges via standard microUSB and is thinner/lighter.

        • OK just read that article and the writer sounded negative towards it. I wont judge until I see it, but @ this price I don't think I will :p

        • +2

Reviews of the new model are generally positive.

Better battery. Better ergonomics. Better buttons. Some built in memory. LCD only slightly not as nice as OLED.And lighter too if I remember correctly.

New one is the better one, but only marginally, and for $188 including Killzone this is a very good purchase - especially when we don't know what the price for the new model will be (do we?). I suppose the new model will be $199 but could be as high as $279.

Anyone know if this offer is in store only? And if so, does anyone know what the availability of the Vita's are?

I called a couple of Big Ws in regards to the 160gb PS3 and most of my local stores had none, and one store had 3 but it wasn't worth the mad rush for me.

        • +1

Color saturation is dramatically worse on the LCD though.

        • It's good enough. Personally I think I'll prefer the OLED screen vs the USB chargability (and I doubt ergonomics/buttons will be tangibly better but willing to be proven wrong)

  • Any 3DS deals?

    • Only a couple of 3DS games in the regular catalogue starting Nov. 7th:

Prof. Layton and Mario and Luigi 3DS for $48 each

  • wonder if i could lay by it now and then cancel the lay by then pay for it for $188 next saturday?

    • Probably, but you will incur layby cancellation fees (or more technically, loss of admin fee)…
And if they are wise to what you are doing they could give it to the next person waiting for it (they often keep a list for in demand items) rather than you when you "return" it…

  • Holy shit! that is an awesome price. I paid $199 for just the damn console a month back. Great find OP.
Edit: Wonder if they would sell me just the game at a bargain price. :\

    • I wonder if they would sell me just the console at a bargain price. :\

      • Well if you are near Gold Coast/Brisbane, I will pay you $30 for the game, so you get the console for $158. :)

      • i thought you had a vita?

        • I do, if this deal was for a new slim model I would be seriously considering replacing it just for the convenience of a micro USB connector :)

        • +6

          but but DAT OLED.

        • but but dat oled looks blotchy, everyone says its amazing, but it looks just like any other screen to me (in some cases worse).

TBH, I've boxed up my Vita, I can't seem to find anything worth playing on it. Uncharted Golden Abyss & Motorstorm RC were the 2 best games, after that there has been nothing else that interests me. I was hoping that Killzone Merc would revive my interest in it but alas, it was not to be :(

        • persona 4 golden mean anything to you?

I dont know i have been playing my vita exclusively for 3 months.. my 3ds is sitting there all lonely. Maybe im just easily satisfied with games. lol

          Disgaea 3? Soul Sacrifice? Rayman?

Golden Abyss was great though! i liked it more than the ps3 versions… cant say i was a fan of Motorstorm though.

        • I thought I was the only one who thought the OLED isn't a very good OLED panel. I mean the fact that the life saver ring in the menus is orange should've sounded alarm bells to everyone.

        • I mean the fact that the life saver ring in the menus is orange should've sounded alarm bells to everyone.

          What do you mean?

          Vita 2000
          http://cfa.gamer-network.net/2013/articles//a/1/6/2/7/8/2/5/…

I'm pretty sure the life saver ring is supposed to red.

No suprise, look at this colour chart

          http://www.4gamer.net/games/990/G999021/20131010111/TN/007.j…

The Vita 1000, doesn't have anything close to 'accurate' in it's colour palette…maybe pitch black, but black is mostly useless in gaming.

        • hmm? The vita 1000 colours look better from those screenshots anyways. Like other Samsung sceens the vita 1000 screen is over saturated which i think looks good anyways.

        • 'Looks' better vs 'is' better are different things. I agree that perhaps in games a saturated look can be more enjoyable, but I've been conditioned to always side with accurate neutral tuning.

        • i had the same feeling when i got my vita, now i have a backlog of games to finish working my way through rayman legends, then i hop on to muramasu rebirth, dragons crown by that time there would be more being backlogged.

This will be a great second back up unit ready for the Ps4 remote play etc..

and i just brought a 2ds few days ago from them…. and haven't opened it think i going to return it now…

        • In the same boat. No vita games of interest even with the PS plus stuff.. I would have sold it by now but I'm saving it for final fantasy X/x2 next year.

Picked up a 3ds and working through fire emblem. :)

        • I would have sold mine too, but if this is an example of what they cost new, then the 2nd hand prices must have dropped through the floor :(

I'll hang onto mine until I get a PS4 (who knows when), even just to trial some of the remote play/2nd screen features. In the meantime I'll just keep playing Uncharted & Motorstorm again…and again…and again :)

  • Can you post a pic of the whole catalogue

  • Off to the city to attempt price match at eb games. Wish me luck!

    • They don't price match console bundles..

  • What are the main differences between this one and the one they have running at JB Hi FI for $259. (Apart from the 3G…)

    • +1

      No GPS.

  • +1

These things are going so cheap now, they where like double of the 3ds value and now look at it, guess 3ds is killing the psp and has no choice but to price match 3ds area.

    • a new vita coming out probably has a bit to do with it as well.

    • I dunno, you could get a Vita + newish game for $200 at least a year ago from Amazon
Guess Australia took a while to catch up

      • Yeah, I got my AC Liberation bundle (White Vita) for $195.44(AUD) delivered from Amazon a year ago.

  • -1

It's ashame that the new psp vita 2000 is only lighter and smaller "thin" no improvements on battery and grahpics, was expecting a portable ps4, doubt that will hit the market until 4-5 years time.

    • apparently it has an extra hour of battery life. Also, if they were gonna improve the graphics they may as well make a new system since the old vita users cant play the new games.

      • +3

It only has the extra hour battery life due to changing the screen to lcd.

I find my oled is great and have no reason for changing it now to the new version unless there was aajor performance upgrade…..
I do like this but I have a 3g vita which does have its advantages.

        • like what advantages?

do u need a sim card for it?

        • I would also like to know the advantages.

Many games don't support multiplayer over 3G, download sizes are limited plus others limitations(so I've read). I assume the 3G assists the GPS location which could be an advantage (my wifi version can never locate)?

  • -4

Revoke since extra research show a red flag. Sony STILL charge ridiculous price on VITA memory card.

    • The prices are better than they were, still expensive, but $77 delivered for 32GB is not that bad. Hell, even the money you save from this PS Vita bundle alone pays for the card.

      • Apple charges $120 for an extra 16GB memory on iPads (to go from 16GB to 32GB). It's just a memory card soldered onto the board.

  • +5

I have both Vitas and whilst the 2000 is slimmer and more comfortable to hold it doesn't compare with the original screens.

The colours are washed out and it has a horrible yellow tinge. It's definitely a budget version. Will be selling my Vita 2000.

    • So hows the battery life compare?

      • A bit better. There's also 1gb on board memory. If it's your first vita then I could recommend a purchase but you won't be able to go from the OLED.

        • the downside with the onboard memory is that it deactivates when you put a memory card in. So if you go digital you will need a memory card anyway. Also some games have patches bigger than 1gb.

    • Disappointing to hear that. Oh well here's hoping they get it right with the Mk3

    • I think that is one of the main issues, you will notice a difference when they are side by side, but take away the OLED for comparison and you would never know what you are missing out on (or gaining). It's like comparing 2 shades of white side by side; you would swear one was 'absolute white' but take it away and you would swear the one remaining was 'absolute white'. A good game will make the differences disappear too :)

      • Definitely the LCD still has a pretty good screen. Games still look stunning. I tried to forget it but the Vita screen is one of the best i've ever used period.

I couldn't give up the OG Vita. I never found it awkward to hold in the first place.

  • +3

Good work OP. Big w should be paying you for answering all their Qs

  • +1

FYI, Killzone Mercenary has a 1.2GB update, so if you want to play any online at all you will need a memory card.

  • definitely going to buy this but which memory card do i need? its expensive though

    • 8gb mega pack is decent value. Use content manager to transfer saves and games to PC and you wont really need a bigger card.

  • +2

Will they ever release a white Vita here?

    • -3

Geez its just the casing color, whats wrong with the black?

      • +3

It would be nice to have a choice. If you're going to be staring at it for hours, it may as well be a colour you like.

  • +3

One aspect of the newer vita's lcd screen that is not often mentioned is poor motion reproduction compared to the oled of the original model. Its a fundamental flaw of the way lcd displays work, fast panning never looks right.

Sony had to buy their oled screens from samsung, hence the switch to lcd being a cost saving measure that leaves gamers with an inferior product.

Its getting a little offensive that all major display manufacturers are sitting back milking massive profits on obsolete lcd displays, when they should be starting to offer affordable 30 inch oled displays.

  • Great deal! Would this be only NSW though?

    • I don't think so. Catalogue says the Click and Collect is only available at select stores in VIC, NSW, ACT and TAS. That's the only qualifier i saw on it anyway.

      • Wait so not in SA?? :(

        • The deal should still be on in SA. Just no click and collect (Unless there's some kind of misprint on the catalogue).

  • anyone noticed with click and collect on certain items it never shows stores near you that have stock but in fact the stores near you do have stock?

I think big w click and collect system in inferior.

  • -2

looks like no stock in qld.

    • no idea why got negatives votes, the site clearly says cannot be pickedup in any qld store.

  • This is so tempting but with the holiday season just around the corner and the new model soon to be released this could depreciate some more? ;) Or is that wishful thinking?

  • For those who want the 3G version it's $239 with Killzone.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/117546

  • That's a good price if you can get it. If you're not happy with the retail games in the shops, just buy a PSN card and buy (indie games) from the PSN library.

I think of the PS Vita as console for indie games with proper controls (Joe Danger gets released on PSN for PSV next year)

It might be just me but having seen the pics linked in this thread the PSV 2000 screen colours looks more "forced" in comparison to the PSV 1000 screen.

Tempted but already have an iPhone

  • so, it was not offered in WA? WA is always left behind :(

    • nar mate, you just have to wait a while ;)

  • Does this work with play tv? As in watch play tv off the play station on the go?

  • This sucks, i was looking for a new vita and i just spend the money on a preowened one :(

  • So it's not available in Brisbane? :(

    • i got the catalogue in brissie
you cant check online as its a one day special
should be available where stock is

  • So, EB Games pricematched it for me and even gave me the 3G + WiFi model. Pretty stoked!

    • Took a picture?

      • See below my friend.

      You enjoy trolling?

      • +3

Not really, enjoy making stupid assumptions? PROOF:

        http://i.imgur.com/fO7nRJY.jpg

        • NICE!! I'm surprised they actually price-matched a 50% off console, especially one that wasn't actually on sale for that price yet. EB normally tries to weasel their way out of this sort of thing.

How did you do it? Do you just take an image of the posted catalog photo in to them?

        • Wow, nice, which EB was that? Anyone had success price matching elsewhere?

        • Took in an image of the catalogue and they matched it on the spot.

        • +1

It was EB Games at Browns Plains, QLD.

        • +1

I just price matched at an EB in WA. 3g instead of wifi. No issues at all.

        • I just tried to price match at an EB in WA.. got rejected "We don't match deals". If you don't mind me asking which store did you go to because I am very interested in the deal.

        • PM me

        • I actually can't PM you because my account isn't a day old (just created it today to reply to you) can you PM me or does it not work like that?
