I bought this last time it was on special. It was excellent for frying and apparently quite healthy (as far as oils go). Highly recommend at this price

The oil turned out better than expected. It seems to be particularly good for frying.

    • how is this compare with Crisco Sunflower Oil?

      • It has quite a neutral taste. It does hold up well when frying, has quite a high smoking point. But pretty bland compared with olive oil and not so good for dressings.

        • Comparing olive oil and rice bran oil is like comparing chalk and cheese. I certainly wouldn't look to use this for salad dressings!

        • +1

I use it for Japanese soy sauce flavor dressing.
Rice oil + Rice vinegar + soy = Japanese dressing.

nah, it is all omega 6. contributes to heart disease

      • +2

Where did you get that it contributes to heart disease? The evidence for omega 3 is better than omega 6 is reasonably weak now. Recent Cochrane reviews show no benefit in omega 3 supplements for cerebral or coronary disease…

There is evidence that rice bran oil lowers LDL & TAG (bad fats), raises HDL (good fat). The evidence is reasonably strong that high levels of LDL and TAG are associated with systemic vascular disease, so I'm a buy for this oil.

Unless you have a meta-analysis suggesting otherwise?

        • +3

ABC's Catalyst has asserted that the case against saturated fats is wrong
and that Sugar, Trans fats and Omega 6 (too easily oxidises) are the real problem
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTkyS5yV82Q

        • Omega 6 is essential for life, our bodies can't build it. No issue with the rest you listed :)

But I'm not sure you can use a TV show to counter a Cochrane review. Cochrane reviews are what health care workers and governments listen to, the Dr Jonny Bowden's of the world whose livelihood depends on their point of view don't exactly have much weight. Jonny says that we're '100% wrong', but can hundreds of trials, particularly meta-analysis be 100% wrong? The reporter has a PhD in Rheumatoid Arthritis, does that allow her to delve into coronary disease and statins (fat lowering drugs)?

        • ABC's Catalyst has asserted that the case against saturated fats is wrong
and that Sugar, Trans fats and Omega 6 (too easily oxidises) are the real problem

yeah, i was shocked when i saw that. the initial science behind saturated fats & heart disease is a load of crock. the evidence that cholesterol is a major contributor to heart disease is poor.

        • +1

from what i gather, omega 6 (which is inflammatory because it easily oxidises) needs to be balanced with omega 3 (which is anti-inflammatory). inflammation of your arteries is what contributes to heart disease. refined sugars are particularly bad. all those soft drinks & energy drinks packed with sugar and processed foods laden with vegetable oils are killing you.

        • I found the long term results of the Framingham research along with Dr Sinatra's practical experience 'interesting' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Framingham_Heart_Study

I suppose getting my Omega 6 via cold pressed sources rather than highly heated cooking oils might be the way I get it into my diet in future

        • another interesting video along the same lines is "Fat Head" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evcNPfZlrZs . the second half of the video discusses nutrition - saturated fats are good, trans fats are bad, vegetable oils are bad, sugar is bad & excess carbs are bad because they get converted to sugar that provokes large insulin responses which leads to obesity, diabetes & heart disease.

    • with the $10 off for every $40 purchase with coupons this will make even better deal.

"Rice bran oil has the highest amount of saturated fat of all the oils on test"

    http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/food-and-health/f…

    • That's not worth a neg, it's still half price. Good price on the Bio Zet

    • +6

The whole story "Rice bran oil has the highest amount of saturated fat of all the oils on test, but is free of trans fats. It performed excellently in our chip-frying test (it didn’t develop any strong smell during cooking and had no strong aftertaste) and can be used in all cooking practices."

I've used it for a few years now, and love it for the deep fryer at this price.

Pfff.. didn't see you negging the $5 lamb shoulder.

"Rice bran oil has the highest amount of saturated fat of all the oils on test"

Is that code for "It tastes delicious"?

    • Is a single choice article the entire extend of your research? The focus of their testing is often very narrow, and doesn't give the whole story.

  • "Only ten bucks for four litres"

  • I'm boycotting Alfa One because I never received my free sample:

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53906

I buy my rice bran oil from Aldi. It's probably cheaper too.

    • mine probably got lost in the mail, along with the brake fluid sample that I never received…

  • +1

Its my favorite oil for deep frying or asian cooking - cheap, no trans fats and high burning point. I'm not worried about saturated fat - it's a lot better for you than canola, peanut sunflower oil, which contain trans fat.

    • +1

None of those oils contain trans fats unless hydrogenated oils aka. trans fats are listed in the ingredients. According to mainstream health guidelines saturated fat would make rice bran oil the least healthy (in terms of fat content) although if your frying foods I'd hazard a guess that this probably isn't a large concern.

      http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/food-and-health/f…

      • Mainstream health guidelines are not always correct. See catalyst and the book I read before that, "The Great Cholesterol Myth" which includes massive amounts of data (including meta data) which shows no link between saturated fat and heart disease.
On the trans fats - they all normally are hydrogenated, especially if you are buying on price and therefore will contain trans fats. Only relative few of those varieties of oils will not contain trans fats.
Grapeseed oil and macadamia oil are great for frying if you are also concerned about saturated fat. Otherwise, rice bran oil sounds like a great way to go.

And not true - I do fry foods and it is not always bad - it depends what they are fried in. the implication is that if you fry foods you are not concerned about health, but that is not true at all. I'm very concerned about health, but it is sugar that I avoid, not fat. That's how I went from 90kg to 72kg in 7 months.

  • This a good price for a good cooking oil. I normally use grape seed oil, but that costs much more.

  • Do they sell refill bottle? It's not practical to use the can all time.

    • They have 250ml, 500ml and 1L bottles, but are obviously not as cheap as the 4L.
      I just refill a 500ml container.

Can I run this in a 1998 Ford Falcon?

    • Not without frying fish and chips in it for a considerable length of time first.

    • All even-year Ford Falcons are flex fuel. So you can use rice bran oil in the fuel tank without any problems. Its still pretty expensive so it doesnt make sense to use it all the time, but just keep a tin handy for when your tank runs dry.

  • I always use virgin oil for cooking fried stuffs. Am I wasting the good oil?

    • +1

yes (if you're buying the good stuff), and olive oil has a very low smoking point, so your food will start to burn quickly at a high temperature.

      • agreed, olive oil is not the most suitable oil for deep frying, and I don't think it is as suitable for asian cooking. I use extra virgin olive oil for everything else.

      • I've never seen smoke when frying with olive oil.

        • Put your glasses on.

    • You mean virgin coconut oil? It's meant to be the healthiest oil to use, especially for frying because of it's high smoke point and stability due to being saturated. So its not a waste if its the best for your health.

  • Country of origin?
Made from GMO crops like most vegetable oils?

    • +1

i don't think that GMO rice has been commercialised anywhere.

canola is the only common vegetable oil that would be GMO. everything else mentioned here (olive, peanut, sunflower, coconut, macadamia) is not GMO.

  • For those that have a Costco membership it's $7.29 for 3Lt, which works out cheaper ;P

  • Sold out at Northbridge NSW….

  • My local Woolies had none (yet) in stock. They reckon it's due later today.
    Bad logistics.

    • Campsie was completely out yesterday also
they didnt even have the special sign up which can only mean they were completely out of stock

  • None at the Woolies I went to today, but I got a raincheck without any hassle (Brisbane CBD Macquarie). Now I can get it any time in the next month.

  • Couldn't find any stock at Bankstown and Chullora NSW today.
