    • Looks like a deal, despite all the knockers Dell can make good a PC. I am still using an XPS Q6600 from 5-6years ago and it has been great.

      Don't forget it also has

      AC wireless
      Wireless keyboard and mouse
      In home warranty

How do Dell set up the SSD, is all the OS on it or is it some half and half setup?

      • Absolutely no idea how its initially configured, i presume it will be like a SSHD, and be a cache style setup.

And yeah the warranty is pretty decent, at least it has been for my XPS laptop.

      • I only know one mate who's bought from Dell but he couldn't have been happier. Computer lasted him as a gaming rig for 4 years without a hitch. Obviously he had to lessen the graphics later in it's life but it didn't skip a beat. Only thing was the HDD which died and had to be replaced.

He put an SSD in it anyway. Found that deal off of Ozbargain too haha. =)

The difference is, alot of those items like the motherboard, cpu and video have 3 years warranty, the ram has lifetime warranty. So the difference in price is worth the additional warranty.

      • Except the difference is the Dell warranty is onsite, after remote diagnosis, and the seperate parts you have to send away. Probably the fastest warranty of the seperate parts would be the CPU since its all sent via fedex express, usually takes 2 weeks or so, everything else usually takes longer.

Where the Dell warranty they are usually onsite within a few days, big difference.

    • Copie, was shipping a significant factor or were the parts generally worth $1341? Thanks for your effort.

      • +1

It was pulled from a price scraper IIRC, even if you got them all from the same shop the total price wouldnt be too far off what i listed.

Use code 9019CW7L0FXG9J for another 8% off, comes to 1103.07 shipped.

    • Cheers, works nicely

Almost seems like they muddled something around, the $1299 one has a GTX650TI (which isn't as good as the R9 270???), no 32MB SSD and doesn't come with a blu-ray reader…

    • +2

Agree, look at the one for $2600+, which is even worse specs!!

    • the $1299 one starting price was 1799…..

      • +2

This price is an error which Dell are aware of, price if this system should be $1999. I believe it will be fixed Monday so order now at this price if interested. I also suggest searching for other codes as this one is ANZ Epp.

    • Which one is better?

      AMD P1-70 2GB GDDR5 (3DMK11 ~P7500) [AMD Radeon R9 270]

      OR

      NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 650 Ti 1.0GB GDDR5

      simply 2GB>1GB?

  • Seriously considering this for a family member. Quite a reasonable all round machine, suitable for gaming on medium settings at 1900x1080 etc

    • +1

If you dont go wild on the AA/AF you will easily be able to run it on high to ultra settings, i have run alot of games on medium with a 1gb HD6950 on a 2560x1440 monitor before.

      • And also keep in mind that you might be able to overclock the card a little bit as well. I know the PSU is a bit weak but it might work out with proper guidance from an overclocking website/forum.

This video from NCIX shows an OC of the r9 270 matches performance with 270x (which is just an OCed 270 anyway) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa-H2auvlHs

  • Does anyone know if we can setup the 32GB SSD with ESX to build VMs on the spinning disks?

    • +1

Probably not man. The SSD usually only works as RAID 0 Intel smart response or smart storage drive. Basically only as a cache drive and not as an actual storage drive. However, you might be able to take the 32gb one out and put in an actual sata ssd? Not sure about that one.

  • How does this Dell system compares to HP Envy system?

    http://www.lmc.com.au/products/Desktop_Computers_and_Workstations/HP/583367/HP_Envy_Phoenix_H9-1405a_Desktop_PC_[H5X84AA]

HP has last gen CPU but 3 TB HDD. How does the graphics cards compare?
Certainly Dell is delivered at ~1100 so seems to be a better deal overall.
    Any suggestions?

    • +3

The graphics card is very, very underpowered for the price (even though it has 3gb memory which would mostly go to waste unless you were doing multimonitor stuff). Other than that, HDDs are really cheap so you can get a larger one anytime. I think Dell has a better reputation on warranty and part longevity as well. So, if you can't get the HP at a considerable lower cost and want to play some games on the machine too then definitely go for the Dell while it lasts. As someone mentioned, it could be a price error as well :S

  • Just a reminder guys, generally the higher performance the machine, the more heat it will generate and the less reliable you can expect it to be. I'm still of a belief that Dell are far more reliable than the average Australian brand name, but high performance still have trouble (I'm talking mainly the motherboard and graphics board). Get a warranty of 3 years if that's when you would on-sell it or get a 5 year warranty if you drive your machines into the ground before you get a new one like me.

    • Good advice. Just had a Dell computer at work fry after a year and a half's use.

    • wheres the option for 5 years?

      • You might have to call but I'm pretty sure all XPS series machines would have 5 year as a choice. I know you can upgrade to 5 after purchase but it might be cheaper to get it as part of the deal.

        • You can extend warranty after purchase?
Might just hold off for now.
Feels better paying less straight up anyways.

        • And leave yourself open to the possibility that it can only get 3 years? (I did say I'm pretty sure, not certain) OK.

        • Aren't most people going to have bought a new PC after 3 years …

        • @Diji1, a laptop probably (if it's under $1000), as for desktops I'm still on socket 775 and enjoying it.
          * quad core q8200
          * 8GB RAM
          * HIS 6850
          * 1TB HDD)
I've had to replaced the PSU after it failed, upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB, add the GPU to continue gaming without bad quality/low framerates, replaced the failed 500GB HDD with a 5400rpm external one ripped out of the case which is slightly slower but still works just fine and I also migrated to a bigger case. I clean it twice a year and that seems to keep it going, if not I'm happy to replace the broken part. When a motherboard/CPU breaks it feels like christmas because then I get do a major upgrade.

    • Less reliable? Sorry but how do you mean? Graphics cards and CPUs run artificially low to ensure adequate heat dissipation. Yes there's definitely more heat produced when gaming but have you seen current gen heat sinks? They're pretty massive and cases come with pretty good air flow design (with optional fans). Never had an issue with my 4 year old gaming PC and that has a custom CPU heat sink and is over clocked to the max :)

Extended warranty is also a rip. You have rights under the Australian consumer law if you buy from a business in Australia.

  • Think i'll pay with finance option (6 months interest free).
Will have to sign up with Gem Visa.
    Never done this before though..
    Thoughts/Opinions/Reviews?

  • +1

More heat does not equal less reliable unless you don't keep it cool. Thing is, the mobo in this is custom junk at best, and the PSU will be just enough to keep the whole thing from collapsing. Combine that with a poor heatsink (Haswell runs HOT at idle, the 4770 I had hit 42 celsius idle, an aftermarket Noctua dropped that to 30/31 celsius) and you have a recipe for a so so PC. The 270 is only midrange and the 32GB SSD is laughable at that price. At least get a real 128GB SSD with some actual speed.

    • +1

All very well, but you will pay a lot more for all that stuff too.. A Noctua wouldn't even fit in the case…

      • Dell wouldn't. They cheap out on parts as do nearly all big box vendors. The Noctua is around $80 and the 128GB SSD is around $100. I'd much rather build a PC to last for an extra $200 than buy this.

    • +1

The 32GB SSD is only meant to be a cache SSD, as in a mini-pcie not a 2.5" drive and even Intel say 64GB of SSD cache is like having over 8GB RAM. I hate to be snooty but it doesn't matter what cooler you have if you don't clean it. Sure a good cooler offers a higher performance but that also means it probably needs more maintainence (not something most consumers/commercial customers want). I'm also pretty happy with Dell heatsinks a fair amount of them push air through the side rather than top/down which makes cleaning them easy.

  • Thanks OP

Couldn't get the autoclub log-in to connect so ordered via chat and Dell rep applied RACV for the 8% discount.

  • So the graphics card is an AMD Radeon R9 270 which has outputs of Dual Link DVI-I, HDMI & DisplayPort (right ?) and if I wanted to use dual monitors, 1 monitor with HDMI and one with VGA inputs, I can just connect one using a HDMI cable and one using the Dual Link DVI-I output with a VGA adapter? This will work yeah?

  • +2

I've done a little research on this 8700 and am going to buy one.

Sure they are not the best gaming rigs, but they are not bad for the money.

A 1 year, in-home service warranty is nice to have - try getting that from CPL or any of the other vendors who offer good deals here on OzBargain…

Also this PC has inbuilt wi-fi - something which the quoted mobos from the build it yourself posts do not - so thats another $20 or so of value…

it also has a built-in card reader - useful for some, useless to others.

Sure Dell isn't for everyone, and this won't replace our 2 gaming PC's - but for general usage including light gaming they fit the bill nicely…

The case has room for 3 hard drives and the 32gb SSD is setup to run in Intel's hdd cache mode to speed up the HDD performance…

    PSU is 460 watts

Finally something that none of the other PC vendors (except Aldi) can match…
    Dell's return policy
    http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/ap/policy/…?

Buy it - change your mind or don't like it - return it for a FULL REFUND within 15 days of purchase.

I love CPL and some of the other vendors that post great deals here, but with this sort of policy it makes my purchase decision today a no-brainer…

Don't forget you can earn 4 points per dollar spent by first logging into the velocity global estore and going from there

    http://estore.velocityfrequentflyer.com/electricals/dell-aus…

4412 points is just short of the 4500 points required for $20 gift cards. So consider roughly another $20 off.

  • Just had a squizz….the SSD has gone, the Graphics Card is only NVIDIA (no Radeon R9 270), no mention of "ac" Wireless, and Blueray not mentioned. Tried "optioning it up" through the config - but couldn't see any of the inclusions I've just mentioned?? Have Dell changed it already & "nobled" their offer? Cheers

    • This is what happened to me yesterday..
I get in chat with some guy at Dell and tell him I'm interested in the XPS 8700. He takes my fone number and calls me withing 2 minutes. After asking me to customoze it verbally for him over the fone he says the total is $1857.37 and thats without Blu Ray. Then he says he can offer me something better with better specs and cheaper… And added that this deal is on its way out cuz Dell realized it was incorrectly priced. (Sales pitch I'm thinking).. Thats whe he offers me the blu ray combo, the 32GB SSd and the Radeon R9 270.
All up I paid $1757 with 6 months int free through GE, comes with win 8.1 pro, bought the KM714 KB and Ms combo,,MS office home and business,Dual band wireless AC7260+ Bluetooth 4.0, 3 year warranty,12 months MacAffee, and whats Dell SRV softwear 7260AC?

  • +1

"Senior's Moment"…..picked the wrong unit!!! Still can't figure out through their "configure" to get the SSD drive?? Time for a "lie down & a Bex" ;->) Definitely….it's included…..doh!!

  • Can you change the SSD and get a bigger one?

    • The Dell site isn't offering too much alteration options.

The SSD is caching the HDD at the moment. There is room for another 2 full size HDD's so you could easily buy an SSD elsewhere and put it in either of the empty drive bays…

  • I finally wound my way through…..the final price is $1,149.62….vs $1,103.07??? The Coupon code took off $99.97 from a grossed up $1,249.59…..wonder what the extra $50 odd $'s is for??? Still a good deal….just curious?

    • Did you select Win8.1 Pro ?
      That would add $50…

    • I just bought 2 of these with the code supplied and without modification and the total was $2206.14 ($1103.07 ea). I'd be interested in what you did different. Thanks OP for listing the deal. My SIL was looking for an upgrade and when I saw this, I figured I might jump on the bandwagon as well. Never had a Dell. I guess time will tell.

  • Gday Blokes and Shielas,

I placed an order about 5pm and got my confirmation email at 6pm EDST and the PDF order they sent me specifies R9 270 and the 32GB SSD.

    Was I just lucky?

Also I gave them my RACV details and they accepted them and total price was $1103.82

    Regards,

    Mick

  • geeze I grabbed the sucker…… money go bye bye……

    • Me too, Forfiet!! My GEM Card comes in handy for these types of items ;->))

  • Anyone reccomend a good monitor to go with this deal?

  • +1

If you look on the Business section of the Dell site, the exact same build is $1999…

  • I'm pretty noob at desktops but can someone tell me if this is cheaper than building it yourself?

Nevermind saw post at top of thread :)

  • w0w. Never thought id own a Dell PC but for this price/specs i couldnt say no. I priced a PC that i would have made and it was only $200 cheaper (though it did have a better gfx card and im suspecting a superior mobo) Thanks for the find OP

  • +1

i can confirm that it does come with wireless keyboard and mouse and they show up on on the invoice.

  • +1

I suspect the deal has expired. Dont see the $1199 option any longer. Only the $1299

    • Strange. Your right, i confirm its back. I swear it was gone when i checked before :/

  • Goneeeee

  • The deal is still there for me.

My Dell sales rep (in a past life I used to buy a LOT of stuff) managed to get me an extra 2% off - so 10% off the $1199…

    BOOYAH!

    • What was the name of your rep if you don't mind me asking?

It's gone again (previously reported by sund00bie).
      Maybe they've been OzBargained?

  • Deal has expired - Ozbargained…

  • +1

so what does people think of the room inside one of these suckers for future graphics upgrades? For me the r9 270 will probably suffice for now, but id like to be able to upgrade in the future. The r9 270 can't be too different, like a cm or 2 I guess from r290's.etc? I plan to use mine for a gaming…..

    • The issue will be the PSU - the 270 only requires one PCI-E power plug. My guess is the PSU may well only have 1 plug.

Higher end cards need two plugs…

PSU is 460 watt. It won't handle a powerhungry card…

      • +1

Yeah i know the PSU would have to be upgraded…..But I have my doubts from what Ive read about getting bigger cards such as R9 290's or 780 in there(size wise)…..

        • I'm thinking about doing the same although I might try to get a year or 2 out of the 270 (and hope prices come down :P).
I found this RE the 280X:

"I recently put a Sapphire's r9 280x Dual-X model into my XPS 8700, which is that card's little brother and it fit just fine. Had to reroute (slightly) a few sata cables but I added 2 extra hard drives to my pc when I got it so I probably had less space to work with than you did. The only thing that really gave me any problems was finding a way to wiggle my new psu with all its wiring into position but even that wasn't too bad."

          http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t…

  • So has anybody got theirs or had them shipped yet?

  • Nope. I logged in to see status and status still says
    "Work in Progress"
    "Estimated Delivery Date: 17/12/201"
    "Order Date: 2/12/2013"

Do people know weather they will be shipping from Oz or O/S ? My dad got a laptop and it was shipping from the US

    • They used to ship from Malaysia, but the last laptop I ordered was made in China.

The only exception would be "Smart Selection" or pre-built systems, which are usually shipped from a warehouse in Oz.

    • I ordered 2/12 as well with an ETA of 18/12, however that's been pushed back to 19/12.

This was the deal that finally got me to join OzBargain and splash some cash. Now to find a monitor!

      • +1

Ny ETA is 18/12 still…. fingers crossed!

        • mine states delivery to be tomorrow but it has been in build ever since the 2/12…

edit: just spoke to dell rep - there's a part shortage on the graphics card and don't have an eta on build completion - may lead to next year if part is not available by the 19/12… no guarantee delivery before Christmas either!! FML

        • well that's crap! Mine says built (and has been for a while) but still hasn't been shipped which concerns me considering that delivery is supposed to be Thursday.

I got an automated text from the courier (or dell) on Friday asking if delivery is ok for Thurs between 9am-1pm reply '1' and if Friday is better reply '2' OR if you would like to speak with someone reply '3.' I thought I would ask if it's ok for a family member to sign for it while I was at work so I replied '3' - no call yet. The courier is DB Schenker. I regret not replying 1 while I had the chance.

        • +1

Phoned the courier an hour ago to ask if I would get the computer by end of week and they said 'definitely yes.' Someone just phoned 5mins ago to say that Dell's ETA was only to the Sydney warehouse and the earliest I'm going to get it is now Monday 23/12. Good luck guys!

        • thanks for keepin us updated! :)

        • +1

          yeah:
"Thank you for contacting Dell Customer Care.

I have checked on your order status. As per checking, there will be some delays of your order due to the order is facing global shortages.
So I will continue to monitor the order status and keep you posted once I got any latest updates."

    • Just called dell and advised my order was "stuck" and it will only go through now that ive made contact.

"So, if i didnt make contact the order would remained stayed stuck and not progressed even though you have deducted my monies ? " - asked
      'Thats possible Sir" - Representative
"Im not getting this before xmas am i ?" - Me
      "Honestly Sir, no" - Rep

  • 1st time ive purchased from Dell and its been an epic fail

  • I just spoke to Dell Customer Care . The support person on the phone said they are waiting wireless card for my build and it is due to arrived to factory on 19/12/13. So I will not get my pc unitl late January 2014 and he can not give me definite delivery date. :( . Really not happy .

    • I'll ring about my order tommorow….sigh

  • I was informed there are 'shortages' and I pressed for an estimated delivery date and the rep just kept saying they will email me when they know.

I'm not prepared to wait another two months or something stupid - Considering cancelling my order, this is a pretty poor effort by Dell.

  • Do you guys think it would be worthwhile getting a 27" 1440p Korean Monitor for approx $350 with this? The R9 270 obviously wouldn't be able to push out ultra at that resolution for something like BF4 but I think medium graphics settings would work alright? Either that or play ultra on a 1080p monitor hmmm…

  • guys just got this

"This e-mail is to inform you that your order is now ready to be shipped and we aim to deliver on or before the estimated delivery date below.

    Deliver on or before
    30 Dec 2013
    "

    • I am still waiting. My dell support said now they waiting for graphic card . :( .

      • not knowing when/if it will come is the worst
