Huawei Ascend G300 $39 @ Kmart Vodafone Prepaid

380

Picked up one of them today at my local Kmart for 39.- as a Vodafone prepaid kit. I know there are better phones around but for that money it is a good unit. Great as back up phone or for the kids.

Mine is locked to Vodafone but you can get online unlock codes for around 5.- to 8.-

Did you notice if it is the"plus" model? 300+?
    Good price.

Sometimes they have the G300+ models mixed up with the G300 models, this is what happened when I bought a G300 from target for $99; They had a whole heap of G300 AND G300+ models in there, all jumbled up, for sale at the exact same price. I unintentionally bought the lower end G300 model. Once I realised the G300+ were being sold for the same price, I called the store, returned and exchanged it for the G300+ model.

Maybe worth checking when you go into whichever Kmart store you go into, ask if ALL the models on sale are G300, or whether there are also G300+ models in their stocks too.

  • +2

No sorry, it is the regular G300. If someone needs the invoice for price match or so let me know

    • please let us know which store you wen to

I have got mine from the Moe store, 3825 Vic.

I know there are better phones around but for that money it is a good unit.

There is? I think this is the only 1ghz CPU core phone you can get for less than $50 AUD.

  • +3

can the android version be upgraded on this to at least 4 ??

    • +1

There is an official 4. firmware from Huawei and there is also an ICS Cyanogenmond in the works.

      • +2

is that the francais version ;)

  • Its been the best phone <$100 (if u can handle using android 2.3) for a longtime. I still use it as main phone and its fine (as long as ur not looking to play middle to high end games)

  • +4

If Android 4 can be crammed onto this, we finally have something to topple the Y201!

  • +4

Installed ICS a month ago on the G300, Seems to work fine.

One of my parents uses this phone - updated to ICS. Feels a little slow - ok for basic use. Got a unlock code off vodas website took 2 days.

Works ok. Recommend installing the Google keyboard and disabling the one included. Also automatic updates make this phone a little unhappy imo. Either be selective with whats updated or manually update.

Bought mine at Target when it was $99. Pretty nice phone at any price- runs ICS well for me.

Huawei is not NBN approved : )

    • +3

      NBN is not muncan approved

    • +1

Your point? It's definately Ozbargain approved though!

    • +3

I'll be sure not to plug any fibre into my Y201 then…

  • +4

You fail to point out this was a clearance phone as I had pointed out last week https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/125607#comment-1728440 . I know stock is very very scarce. Don't get your hopes up of getting one.

Any one wanting a copy of the receipt here it is http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/39370/19737/image.jpg

  • I can't seem to find it in those catalogs, can any1 direct me?

    • It's in The Gift Guide catalogue on page 30

      • Y201, Champ, Xperia, L2 - that's it…

  • Just watched a review.. Seems very good. Was 100GBP about a year ago….. LOL..

Aren't Huawei "evil" according to our government, spying for the Chinese Communist party? I guess it isn't a major issue though, since our own government spies on us and shares it's information with anyone who wants it. And with this latest "free" trade agreement, our treacherous politicians are going to sell out the Australian people to American corporations. American corporations will be able to litigate against the Australian government if it does anything to harm their profiteering :( No wonder so many people refuse to enrol to vote; democracy is the most corrupt political system ever devised.

    • Ohhh so much conspiracy … lol. I just went and checked under my bed..
"democracy is the most corrupt political system ever devised."
Yes, it is not perfect but better than any other we know. Which system do you recommend?

      • A republic.

        • What sort of republic? A democratic republic? :-)

    • Well said sir!

    • What are they going to do with the data from owners of Huawei phones? Read Justin Beiber fan mail? The US government will get your data before anyone else.

If you own an iPhone, Apple already has your data and the same with American authorities.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone#Secret_tracking

Who's most "evil"? The large US corporations who suppress wages, price gouge the consumer and practice anti-competitive behavior or their consumer friendly, non-litigious overseas competitor? Lets support Huawei to become like Apple :P

  • Ahhhh gingerbread 2.3; for when you want your phone to crash and need re-booting every time you use non-wifi internet

  • Will officeworks do price beat?

    • A fellow member asked me for a copy of my receipt last week for the purpose of trying to get a price match at OW. Hopefully he or she can come on here and let us know how they went.

    • Officeworks' price-match policy excludes clearance sales. You might be lucky, they might not have discovered it is a clearance sale yet, and may not notice when you buy it.

You'll also need a way to demonstrate the $39 price to them, could be difficult as the on-line catalog doesn't seem to show this phone.

One of the worst smartphone out there. I sold this to a customer and she came back after 2 weeks, complaining the mobile freezes everytime. Well at least it's not an Huawei Y100 which in my opinion, should not be called as a "smartphone". At this price range, a feature phone is a way better value for money.

I got this about 6 months back, paid $10 to get it unlocked on ebay.

From memory I upgraded it to ice cream sandwich

  • went to kmart burwood sydney to get one said was 99 bucks and that it was the g3 for 39

    • Show them a copy of the receipt I posted above. All Kmarts have the same stock. They all get confused, it's the G300+ that is selling for $99. As I said above, stock is very scarce too non existent if you are in the city. OP was lucky because he got it from a rural store.

This unlocking tool may work for some of you. I have used it in the past to unlock an optus phone for free.

In case it's needed we have unlock codes available for $5.43

    http://www.itzunlocked.com.au/en/tools/solution/australia-hu…

  • I've used this guy to unlock before. Had the code in the mail within minutes http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221317529597 $5.14

  • Cant use 1500mAh devices as backup. They run out of steam in few hours.

  • How does this phone compare with the Huawei Y201 ?

    • +2

G300 is way better to use. 4" 800x480 (G300) versus piddly 3.5" 480x320 (Y201) and G300 has GPU acceleration. G300 also has a stack of user-created ROMs at modaco.com . Otherwise they spec out pretty much the same: single-core CPU (though G300 is 200Mhz faster). Need a Y300 to get a faster dual-core CPU, newer JB 4.1 Android OS and front-facing camera.

      • +1

FYI the Qualcomm MSM7227A found in the y201 includes an Adreno 200 Enhanced GPU, just like the G300.

Called Newtown store in Hobart, None in Stock, I will visit the store just in case.

Just left Kmart Burwood & they don't have it and only have the G300+ for $99.

  • This phone made me hate android.

After grabbing a Nexus 4 it's now my favourite mobile OS.

All about expectations, and for the price I can see the appeal - bargain.

  • I've been using one of these as my main phone and it is great as a basic phone and for Internet browsing, email and basic apps. Recently upgraded to ICS, which has made it a bit too sluggish.

  • +1

DSE has the G300+ free delivery for $79 today if you desperately want it and Kmart don't have it anymore.

    • +2

Bought this for $99 and its my main phone now. Unlocked for free from vodafone website. Upgraded to Android 4.0.3. Takes great photos. Great GPS and in-car navigator. Just an excellent phone for the price.

  • +1

what android version is it ?
    is it 2.3 or 4.0

if its 2.3 how do we upgrade to 4.0?
    which website ?

  • LOL… Checked Waratah 2298 and Glendale 2285… didn't know, didn't care… LOL…
Laziest disinterested people I have ever met in a store in a long time.

    • imagine getting negged for honesty…

  • what are the specs differences for the 300+

  • no stock near me :(
