Acer Aspire E1-531-B9602G50Mnks (NX.M12SA.009) $200 (after $49 Acer Cash Back) @ Australia Post

480

Saw a few clearance laptops at Knox City Post Office today. I picked this one because it has a $49 cash back from Acer.

They had two other HP laptops on clearance but I didn't grab their model numbers or any other details. One was priced $249 and the other was priced $299. This was the last Acer laptop at Knox City.

If you want to look for stock contact Australia Post on 13 13 18 and they should be able to look up which stores have stock available.

The specifications on the Acer laptop as they appear on the box are:

OS: Windows 8 64-bit
Processor: Intel B960 processor
LCD: 15.6" HD Acer CineCrystal LED LCD
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics
Memory: 2GB DDR3 Memory
Storage: 500GB HDD
Optical Drive: DVD-Super Multi DL drive
WLAN/Bluetooth: Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/n
WWAN: No
Webcam: Acer Crystal Eye HD webcam
Battery: 6-cell Li-ion battery
Software: Microsoft Office trial

Hopefully someone can update us with details about the HP laptops if they come across them tomorrow during their travels.

Some of the Ozbargainers here seem to forget that not everyone has a big budget for tech goods for the whole family. Some people only need a computer for basics such as emails, google searches, basic word processing, storing photos and music etc. For some this laptop will do just fine, others will add extra 2 Gig of ram (+-$20) to boost multitasking speed etc. This cpu., Intel Pentium b960 get's a passmark score of 1891, which is better than a lot of $499> laptops out there. It will also be faster than a lot of tablets too, not to mention full W8/W7, with the added ports and peripherals ( burn photos/music/movies to cd/dvd ), you get the idea. Not everyone needs a powerful computer for photo editing or graphics hungry games. I say for the price this is an absolute bargain.

my point is more that this is $200 laptop, and should be considered as such. it's never going to be a great machine for upgrading or future proofing. it'll run ubuntu and basic Windows fine, as well pretty much any 2009 high end machine.

2gb is enough to run win 8

An ssd plus 8 gb ram would shoot this system to beat most 600 aud machines released in 2009

The price just highlines the state of Acer and the rest of it industry.

  • is this Australia wide?

It should be just like this previous deal was https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101292. It's just a matter of checking whether your local PO has stock or calling 13 11 18 to locate the nearest stores with stock. Don't forget there are also 2 HP laptops on clearance too.

at the end of the day Something like this is good for some people who dont need a powerful machine.

OP: Does the WiFi work on 5GHz? Might work well as a BYOD for school this year if it does.

  • In Sydney, it seemed every store had one left on the computer. Calling Auspost resulted in them calling each individual store (much slower than I could have done it).

Managed to find one, thanks op!

  • Lovely and helpful Aust Post lady said the last (or only) Acer in Tassie is at the Ulverstone PO. Oh well…

  • Nothing at bentleigh or southlan

    This post reminds me…

I know a lot of people in well-paid office jobs that receive a new personal laptop every 3 years or so and shockingly sometimes they dispose of them (as in trash them) in working order because "they run too slow" after a period of time or the battery dies. The first scenario is quite irritating when they don't investigate why but even a battery-less laptop is better than nothing for many children (and adults) around Australia who don't have $200 to spend on a low-end laptop. Ironically, the maximum graphical and processing requirements of the average office worker is probably a lot less than the average kid that dabbles in games and video editing (although not as necessitous as word processing).

I'm a grown-ass man and I recently saw the opportunity to buy a 2008 Core2Duo E8400 PC for $20 on OzBargain, which I did (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/125894). I was replacing a 2002 Pentium 4 which became too slow for recreational use when the world (i.e. Google :)) finally made HTML5 video (and to a lesser extent, Flash Player 11, when it's actually still used) the standard in 2013. I could no longer watch 320p videos in a browser without a lot of workarounds and now I can watch the full 1080. On a productivity level, it was uselessly slow for some modern programming environments (e.g. Eclipse).

Moral of the story is if you have friends that studied a Bachelor of Commerce that are a bit less computer-savvy you should ask them for their perfectly adequate early-2011 laptop before they put it out in the rain for garbage collection day. Alternately, try friends who always need the latest toys (their "ancient" overclocked 2009 Quad-Core with the NASA-grade cooling system might serve you just fine).

    • lol, my mum threw out a 2011 mac laptop even when I told her I wanted it because it was a hassle for her to ask her IT guy at work to wipe the drive.

Had a bad experience with Acer. Bought an Aspire One D255E few years back. Some keyboard keys stopped working right after I upgraded the RAM. RAM Upgrading voided the warranty - so I was effectively stuck with a $400 brick.

Subsequently got myself an Asus and it working flawlessly since that time.

    • +1

Maybe you dislodged the keyboard connector cable when inserting the RAM?

I did have some issues with a couple of Aspire Ones which were covered under warranty (failed RAM plus 2 times failed HDD; got a bigger HDD both times).

    • You can buy new keyboards for most laptops for about $20 delivered on ebay. Easy instructions on how to replace it are out there.

  • Wonder if there is any sold in Perth?

  • Just had 20 minutes on hold as "Queenie" with Aus Post called around the Adelaide Post Offices.

    Nothing :-(

    But, thanks to the OP.

    • Well, "Queenie" was wrong!

I just saw one at the Campbelltown (5074) Post Office.

      • +1

I think Queenie wanted one for herself.

  • Mentone, hampton, brighton, brighton north. All nothing
Mentone was selling the HP650 b830 for $299

Was told that there was nothing in the state at least 3 times.

stock code for acer is 13987
    hp 61269

  • just got the last one left from Rhodes store..thanks OP

  • Apparently all of the Aspires are gone Australia-wide.

FYI, the phone number in the first pose is wrong, should be: 13 13 18.

    • Thanks for correcting that for me.

  • mate, you are really the last one. I just called Auspost and was told no more Acer (code 13987) left in Sydney.

Does anyone know the model and the Auspost product code for another HP laptop (priced $249)? people in Auspost can't do search for you if they don't have the product code. Thx in advance

  • Thanks Op! I got one (last one) from Gawler SA. I went in and asked if they had any laptops and the lady said she had some out the back and went to have a look. I said I was looking for the Acer and she went out and found the only one they had. She scanned it and then said if I didnt buy it that she was going to, at which point i let her know there was a $49 cash back on it also. She was really supprised I even knew about it as it wasnt in the catalogue and she didnt know about it. Thanks again Op!

  • Picked up the last $249 HP that was also on clearance. Posting off it now, extremely impressed for the price of it. Used my ING paywave that i received from the refer a friend bargain posted a couple of weeks ago takes it down to $236.55, Good Deal.

    • Can you please tell us what are the specs for the HP $249 laptop?

      • HP 650 C5Q29PA CELERON B830 1.8GHz, 2GB Ram, 320GB HDD, 15.6" HD screen, Intel HD, DVDRW, Win 8 64Bit, 1YR

    • Hi can you please tell us the stock code for this laptop? Thanks!

  • Score!

I cannot believe I actually got one…amazing notebook considering what's being sold in the shops right now. And for $200?

Btw, the unit I bought (only one there) had the wrong AU post inventory code on it. They had it tagged with: 60451. You might want to try asking for that number if you get told "none in stock".

    Thanks, Unity1!! :)

  • No more left at Knox City. Went to pick up a parcel today and they guy told me the phones went crazy yesterday. Good luck to those that managed to get one.

  • Rang Auspost this morning.
    No more in WA.

    • Did you read my post above?

The one I got was incorrectly tagged as AU post number: 60451 not: 13987 as was originally posted here.

      Cheers

      • Thanks for pointing this out. I manage to get one from the East Vic Park store after asking for both stock codes. AFAIK there should be another one at Cloverdale store if anyone still wants to pick one up. I reserved one for a colleague a couple of days ago but he ended up not wanting it.

  • Saw one of the $299 HP laptops on sale at Knox City PO this afternoon.
