Dodo vs iiNet vs TPG NBN - help me out..Stuck!!

Hi OzB friends!

I am really stuck and confused for choice here.

I already have iiNet 79.95 NBN plan with 500GB peak/ 500GB off peak data allowance (one year contract remaining). The thing is I think I am paying too much considering Dodo is now offering unlimited data allowance for 59.95. I am tempted to change over to Dodo but there are three factors holding me back:

  1. I pay 100 dollars to iiNet for contract breach
  2. I pay at least 120 dollars (24 month plan) to Dodo to start with for the stupid complusory router purchase.
  3. Also makes me think if it's worth while to wait for TPG unlimited NBN plans to come to life (know they have been announced, but there's been no further word), given TPG would probably also throw in a phone service with unlimited national and international calls (selected destinations) just like its adsl unlimited plans.

Please advise which path is the best for me to choose.

Thanks in advace guys!

    Hi there,

For me, as a rule of thumb, I generally avoid plans with unlimited data as it generally attracts leechers(people who download stuff 24/7). ISPs make money by overselling a data pipe, meaning they are banking on not everyone is using the data pipe at the same time. eg. 100mbs pipe, put 1000 subscribers on the pipe, but only 100 people downloading stuff from the pipe at any given time, each person experiences 1mbs download. If everyone is downloading from the pipe all the time, ie. leechers, this means each person will only experience 0.1mbs at any given time! I don't know the ratio of people per pipe exactly, but I am sure you get the idea.

That's my reasoning anyway, if I were you, I would stick with iiNet for now since like you said, TPG plans maybe just around the corner and the downtime from the switchover can be a pain. :)

    • Thanks mate, makes sense what you say about the unlimited plans! Yeah the extra setup dollars I would need to spend are pulling me away from Dodo, but then I am spending like 20 bucks extra a month for nothing really.. as you can see I am not the best at handling dilemmas ;)

    • I know this is an old topic but that's such a stupid, stupid comment that I couldn't help but reply to…

The unlimited plans, along with the standard limited plans, ALL share the same bandwidth from the company you're with.

They don't have a separate grid for unlimited users and a separate one for limited - everyone shares the same bandwidth with every plan.

So, depriving yourself of an unlimited plan because you think you're being clever and getting one over on the leechers is just really, really stupid.
But go ahead, coming from someone who downloads quite a bit and always gets unlimited, I hope more people think like this… it just makes things better for me..

There's no way around this really but contention ratios (which is what we're talking about here) is rarely a major issue.
You're rarely going to have issues with contention on a sub 15mbit line because, there's nearly always enough bandwidth to max out one of those lines.
Maybe you might notice it on a 50 or 100mbit line that you're not getting 100% of your expected bandwidth, but you won't notice on a slower line because there's usually always enough bandwidth spare to max out a slower line.

  • Please advise which path is the best for me to choose

    Use Whirlpool's Broadband Search

I'm assuming you are on the 12/1 iiNet NBN plan as you say you are paying $80/month. Why not go with Exetel?. 150GB peak/ No limit offpeak, 12 month contract, $50 setup fee, 12/1, for $60/month

I am with iinet to. Have monthly plan. My daughter was looking at getting internet a few weeks ago. Looked at the plans with her and notice in fine print that they have shaping if they deem your using to much of the unlimited. So check the fine print! I would stay with iinet and wait to see what happens with NBN.

That seems pretty decent in terms of value for me. Iinet and internode have some of the best customer service in the industry which I think is a big plus - they even got Telstra to waive 2 technician fees for me.

Are you going over your data? Because the grass isn't always greener on the other side

    • Yeah agree with you on that, I have had immaculate customer service from iiNet every single time. Called Dodo the other day, and the person on the phone was hardly understandable, and was argumentative without any provocation…lol. Think it is based in Phillipines.

  • I'm with iiNet, and would not switch for the world. I deal with a variety of ISPs on a weekly basis for the last 19 years (yes, even when dial-up was around) as a technician, and for service you cannot beat iiNet or Amnet. I cannot speak directly for TPG, but my customers seem to like them too.

Bad quality of connection or service on more than one occasion with no resolve:

Telstra, Dodo, Optus, Virgin, iPrimus, AAPT, and Vodafone.

I cannot speak for any of the others as I have not dealt with them, but whirlpool is a great source for this kind of question:
