VPN - Advantages & Best Sites a VPN can Access

Hi,

I am thinking of using VPN to enhance security on my home pc as well as mobile. Was wondering what are the best sites I can access thru a VPN that are normally blocked when accessing from Australia. I think Hulu and the BBC are such site but would like other good sites.

Also any other info regarding the advantage & disadvantages using a vpn

Thanks

Colin

  • I have the Media Hint Add-on in Firefox. Works for BBC and many others without a VPN.

    Quick Google;

  • how is using a vpn going to "enchance security" ??

    • Using a VPN creates a tunnel between you and the website and also uses encryption. I thought this would be good when using wifi hotspots if doing online transactions. Found a VPN supplier who only charges $2 per month so not talking about "sheep stations"

      • using https, data between the two peer end points will be encrypted, so no enhanced security there.

        for non-encrypted traffic, you are simply shifting your trust from the wifi network to some anonymous vpn operator, so no enhanced security there either.

        you are better off paying for a vps and setting up your own vpn server. but even then you are just shifting trust.

    • vpn encrypts your data that is transferred over the internet. Like many mentioned, you are transferring trust and many times you get what you pay. For that reason, i stick to more reputable companies like hma (http://hidemyass.com/vpn/r11726). They are large scale companies and more properly set up to manage accounts.

      • You do realise Hide my ass has a really bad name. If you have ever heard of a group called LulzSec….Well they used Hide my ass. And let's just say HMA were pretty quick to hand over logs…

  • I'll just put this here…..

    Make your own decision and do your own research.
