Portable air conditioner compressor switching off during use?

have a airflow portable AC got from TGG 2years back only using this time around of the year. last night in the blasting 40plus hear in melbourne, it would run full blast for about 20-30mins then the compressor would turn off and blow room air then kick back in after 20mins i assume over heating somewhere?

thinking about getting a portable split system but cant seem to find them anywhere???

  • It actually sounds like your current portable might have a blocked/dirty air filter, or it's stuffed & you need a new one.

I haven't seen a portable split for donkey's years…you might be better off with a box unit stuck in a window if you're renting.

In addition to air filters, you also want to check the water pipe on the back. On many of these air conditioners, you need to empty them regularly by tilting them a little.

Also read the operating specs in the manual if you still have it. Most domestic aircons have a maximum operating temp of 42 degrees. Then the thermal cutout will kick in, the fan will then blow air to help cool itself down, then the compressor will restart. As well as the air temp, the unit itself will build up its own heat and turn off. Also try to avoid any direct sunlight or reflected heat off any walls or rooves. Yeah, I know it seems silly, you buy an aircon, and just when you need it most……

    • I was gonna say compressor overheating too.

The commercial ones you sometimes see in shops are the only real portables that are bullet proof, too bad they are so big and probably costly.

  • It's about 28 n much cooler then last night.
