How much is stuff priced up at the servos compared to the supermarket?

For the average car (50L) this is a $5 saving which I guess might be eaten up in the priceup.

    • +1

Milk is $1/litre which is about as cheap as you'll find it (Aldi is 96c/litre). Pasta is $1 for 500g (79c at Aldi). Anything else reasonably priced?

      • +1

        Milk is $1/litre

Only for the generic brand. They overcharge for the better milks…

        • +5

They overcharge for the better milks…

You mean for the labelled milks.

All comes from the same factories.

        • +7
        • that was really good!

        • +2

          milk come from MILF

        • +1

All comes from the same factories.

Isn't that the same factory where they make steak?

      • Just buy 20L of Milk!

        • 20L of Milk? May be good timing for Uni O week shenanigans.
Anyone know a cheap deal for a blow up kids pool to pour the milk in to?

    • +13

And if you consider that it is ony 6c/l saving in addition to the standard 4c it is only really an additional $3 saving on a 50L fill, adjust for higher bowser price to begin with…feeding the duopoly etc.

      Hardly a bargain.

      • Hm. From what I read, OP said it stacks with the normal 4c off?

      • +2

It stacks with the standard 4c.

      • For a 50 litre fill, this is an ADDITIONAL $5 saving (besides any supermarket docket 4c = $2 saving).

  • +3

I just read the email and was thinking of posting this. However still unsure if it's a good deal.

    Damn you guys are fast!

  • +3

milk and bread same price with the normal store. other items are too expensive

    • They don't stock most of the milk and bread brands though…

  • +2

    20L of milk… here i come :)

    maybe not lol

  • +5

We all know most items are jacked up anyway so no deal.

  • +1

I remember reading somewhere Coles are aligning their Coles Express prices with their regular store prices. Not sure when this will be implemented.

  • +7

So the wait for a bowser will get worse as people are doing their grocery shopping at the servo instead.

It will be interesting to see how high they go with the spend amounts.

  • +2

I don't know why, but Coles Express has the best deals on energy drinks. The other day I was in there and they had 4x250ml packs for $3 each (75c/can).

    So at $1.59/L - 10c - 4c = $1.45 - 5% IGDirect (7.25c) = 1.377c/L

    • +2

1.377c/L is an amazing deal right there. I can see why blind is in your name ;) Too much snow. In NZ.

  • +1

Goodie, now I don't have to feel so guilty about buying Hot Wheels from the servo.

    • buying Hot Wheels

Are they included as 'groceries' ???

      • +5

Yep, cause the kids will devour them.

        • +1

You can probably get the Hot Wheels much cheaper at Target or Big W or K-Mart and the savings will far exceed the 10c per litre…

        • You'd be surprised they haven't really inflated the price much. IIRC just $0.60 but on the flipside, I can easily fill up 150L+ at a time…

        • Do you have a jerry can or something?

    • HAHAHA was about to say the same thing…. win!

  • +2

Didn't take long for Coles to find a way of thumbing their noses at the ACCC. Maybe the 4c agreement has already had an effect on Coles supermarket and/or fuel sales.

  • +2

    Is this a joke?!

The whole point of the ACCC ruling was to stop the big two (coles/woolies) from giving out huge petrol discount dockets to allow the independent servos to compete in a fairer market. So now they offer bigger discount vouchers if you buy groceries at the servo, and now they are aligning the prices to be the same as at the supermarket. What a joke!!

I expect to see the servos small 'grocery' area to expand quite significantly in the near future.

    ACCC = toothless dog.

    • no actually the ACCC ruling was for Coles supermarkets to stop funding the discounts of Coles Express fuel stations. Since this discount only comes from your spend at the fuel station then it's perfectly fine.

It is dodgy that they are aligning their prices though because clearly they only get the prices on those items due to the large purchasing power of the supermarkets. So it is going in a round about way but it's a little bit better? haha

      • It seems Coles and WW will always keep finding new ways to exploit the current restrictions which allow them to rule our smaller companies. Nothing new.

      • So how does offering 10c a litre for servo goods, on top of the 4c shopper discount, allow independents to compete precisely? A rose by any other name…

      • We will very soon see a car park with petrol pumps installed next to every single parking space and a huge building next to it with a big sign "Coles Express" / "Caltex Woolworths".

        • funny you say that, cus I noticed there's one in NSW already for a few years: giant local woolies with it's own petrol station (minus the 'individual pumps per parking bay thing')

50% off Tim Tam or MInt Slice 175-200g varieties
    http://www.colesexpress.com.au/Portals/0/special-offers/FY14…

    • +6

      Reduced to $6 a packet? :)

      • Exactly…. they dont quote prices, but percentages :).

What's the bet their 'half price' wont come anywhere near the $2 these sell for in the supermarket on promotion.

        • -1

Biscuits are normally $4.60 so half price is $2.30,

        • +5

They were $1.62 last week in woolworths

So if you buy $20 worth = 9 packets from Coles Express
          You are paying and extra 9x .68 = $6.12

So you are still better off buying at WW and foregoing the 10c a litre unless you have a larger than 61 litre tank.

  • anything >4c now is luxury!

  • +2

Hey. isn't this regulated by ACCC to only 4cents now???

    • +1

      Only for supermarket dockets.

Coles Express is considered a petrol station (or convenience store?), not a supermarket.
Coles is now in the process of aligning petrol station prices with super market prices.

Next up: Rebranding of Coles Supermarkets to Coles Express and complimentary fuel bowsers at every car parking.

  • I still waiting for the Coles Express to bring back the $2 car wash deal…..

  • +4

If you can afford to grocery shop at a Coles Express, you don't need a fuel discount. All the express shops are more expensive than a normal coles

  • I thought Coles had taken an undertaking about no more fuel discount

    • +2

Here is the ruling… basically they only have fuel discounts above 4c/l funded by the Coles Express side of the business

      http://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/coles-and-woolworths-un…

"at their service stations, Coles and Woolworths may still offer discounts on fuel (including discounts in excess of 4 cents per litre), but from 1 January 2014, all fuel discounts (including those offered by the supermarkets) must be funded from within their fuel retailing operations (including associated convenience stores and other activities at their service stations)."

  • -6

Didn't they agree on the 4c max discount?

Edit ok have to buy $20 from inside the servo LOL

    Negged no deal

  • Do they have $20 gift cards or something?

We could use them on our next $20 purchase of fuel and it would just go around in a loop.

    • This is very interesting. I thought the fact that the petrol station side of the business was funding the extra discounts would make it fit in with the original agreement.

  • The grocery store part of the servo is run by the supermarket business though.
