Audio Sale at Qantas FF Store (Headphones incl Bose, Sennheiser and Beats)

110

QANTAS Frequent Flyer Store is having a sale on audio equipment - up to 25% off QFF points required.

I picked up the Bose QC20i for 48,000 points (previously 56,500). Whilst never as cheap as buying in the store, if you were trying to use up your QFF points (potentially out of fear their value will diminish especially as flight redemptions aren't that cheap anymore), this is a nice way to use them.

There is a decent range of brands (Beats, Sennheiser, Bang & Olufsen). Happy to post up more deals.

  • Which is better? QC15 or QC3

    • I researched this a bit- QC3 are pried at a premium despite being a much older design. QC3 is meant to have better audio quality but less effective noise cancelling due to the shape/positioning over the ears.

I would guess that the Qc15 is 5x better than the Qc3 :)

      • Thanks Guys. I've ordered the QC15. Thanks Op.

    • Best you demo them. Apple stores and Bose stores definitely have them. I listened to both noise cancelling headphones at my local Apple store and the QC15 really impressed me. The QC3 was too easily drowned out by the noise in the store and mall shoppers. To me the QC15 has better build quality, more comfortable and great sound quality. You'd have to be the extremest of extreme audiophiles to tell the difference in sound quality!

      • Have you seen anywhere demo the QC20 (in-ear)?

        • +1

No. To be honest I've never seen any shop that allows earphones/IEM to be demo'ed. I've been shopping in Canberra for several years and never seen one pair on display.

Store's tend not to like putting them out for display because its unhygienic. Plus they are easier to damage and harder to secure from theft.

You might want to pop into your nearest Bose store to try.

        • I ended up rushing, and bought the QC20i based on online reviews- and am pretty darn happy with them! Great quality and the ANC is amazing. Can't wait to try it out on the plane.

Agreed re: unhygienic to share IEMs/in-earphones. I'd be nervous to try it at say a JB Hifi- it'd have to be a proper boutique store which cleaned the ear tips after each try. Maybe the official Bose stores do that?

The bose store at sydney westfield lv6 has two sets of qc20 for demo, but the staffs don't seems to be cleaning them nor do they provide any anti-bateria wipes within sight. If you wish to try them on but can't stand the grossness of the ear wax or god knows what in them , be prepared to BYO wipes.

        • LOL… for what it's worth, the QC20s don't sit "in-ear" in the typical sense where they really dig in. I think it feels more like soft rubber tips which sit on the outer edge and hang in using the "Suretip" hook. That being said, I'd still want to wipe them down before trying!

After living with QC20i's for a couple of weeks now I'm really enjoying them. They block out so much noise and you really appreciate the ANC on public transport and in the office. They are also a lot less visible than QC15s (or my Beats) which mean they fit in in an office environment a lot better. The clients I call using them have also not reported any issues in hearing me (and I can hear them perfectly well too).

  • I bought the QC3's because i didn't want the headphones to cup my ear.

The only negative with them is the rechargable battery, as the QC15 takes standard batteries.

    • From what I've read, u need to remember to charge the headphone whereas AAA batteries are readily available. Also, u need to bring the charger with you.

      • Yeah correct with the QC3's so what ive done is just bought a second battery pack.

  • I Got QC 15 and i love it.. awesome noise cancellation and sound is great…

wouldn't it be better to cash the points out as giftcards, and buy headphones cheaper elsewhere?

the sale prices still don't make it worthwhile (relative to giftcard conversion).

    • +5

This is probably true if you can negotiate or get a discount to RRP.

Quietcomfort 20i is 48,000 points at FF store or $399 at Myer (disregarding the bonus $20 iTunes card if you buy from Myer at the moment).

      Link: http://m.myer.com.au/shop/mobile/mystore/bose--174%3B-qc20i-…

At the current rates on FF store, 15,100 points get you a $100 gift card, 37,500 points gets you a $250 gift card and 74,700 points get you a $500 gift card. Assuming you used the most cost effective redemption closest in value to this (i.e. the $500 gift card; rather than stacking multiples of smaller denominations), you'd be paying 74,700 points * 80% (since you're only using 80% of the card) which equates to 59,760 points. This is roughly in line with the original price of these headphones on the FF store at 56,500 points. Therefore getting it for 48,000 points isn't too bad a deal.

I'm sure there are examples where it's more cost effective to get gift cards and buy from the cheapest place, but for a lot of us, FF points just sit there and keep on accumulating over time without ever being redeemed. Given there's free delivery with this stuff, it makes for a nice and convenient way to use something you weren't using.

i think you mistake what i mean…i mean, convert the points to a giftcard that you'll use (separately). ie. woolworths, big w, myer…wherever you are likely to buy stuff from.

then use the money you saved on your groceries (or whatever you spend the giftcard on) to buy the headphones from elsewhere where they are significantly cheaper.

ie. $500 gift card for 74,700 points is 149.4 points per dollar. that makes QC20i notionally $321.26 as redeemed from FF store.

now, current amazon pricing on QC20i is $299USD, which will work out to be more than FF store. but that's the RRP in america…they'll surely go on sale for significantly cheaper at some point (they are a new-ish model, and haven't been on sale yet, according to camelcamelcamel). point being that, unless you really want them now, the FF store sale price is not a particularly great deal, and you will definitely be able to pick them up significantly cheaper on sale elsewhere.

QC20i isn't the best example, i just went with yours. but take something like the RS180, for example, and i think you'll find RS180 have been on sale in australia for cheaper.

more generally, my point is that headphones are ridiculously overpriced in australia, so comparing to australian RRP is not meaningful. you're much better off buying headphones from overseas, or from australian grey importers, or local stock on (proper) sale. never pay australian RRP!!!

        • I get what you mean- I think it really depends how much effort people want to put in to this and whether they just want immediate satisfaction from using their points to get something they want.

As always, for the true Ozbargainers looking for the deal to put them in the best financial position, it probably does work out to use the points for gift cards, save money elsewhere and then wait for them to actually go on a proper sale (rather than a FF sale).

I personally just have a lot of points and have been eyeing the QC20i for a while, and whilst I was a bit disappointed at first I missed out on buying them during the 'bonus offer' sale in January (free airline adaptor), the 8,500 point discount definitely made up for it (since the adaptor was only worth $15 anyway).

        • yeah, that's a fair point. it does take extra effort in redeeming giftcards, and making sure you use them up, etc. so it is more of a hassle…plus having to search for a better sale on the headphones you want.

but then, hassle and searching for a better deal is the ozbargain way!!! :)

anyway, yeah all good, was just a suggestion. looks like this IS the best deal for QC20i at the moment, so if you really want them now, you should go for it!

  • Ordered the yurbuds focus LE since they had some decent reviews. Will see how it goes. Nothing on there seems to be better than my beyerdynamic DT1350s

  • Did not know that than there's a Qantas ff store…
happy, i get to use my 3 years old points…
    thanks op!

QC20 is a little gem!!! Was going to buy the QC15 in US but when I tried the QC20, I was sold straight away! Audio quality is very good (don't forget you'll use them in a less than ideal environment). The noise cancelling is what I'm looking for, it blew my mind. Benefits for me were: small to carry in my pocket, more comfort for long flights as I can now turn my head side ways; Audio by-pass for when your batteries are out; I can use it anywhere i want without being seen as wearing a bulky noise cancelling headset!

Yes, I've used QC15 for many years, and the QC2s.

    • A lot of people are sworn converts from the 15 to the 20. I really like the non bulky size and the supposedly newer technology. Also appreciate no batteries doesn't mean no music which has happened to me on my beats studio.
