Microsoft Surface Pro 64GB $524, 128GB $603 with Touch Cover, JB Hi-Fi Instore w/ Haggling

571

Surface Pro 1 bought from JB Hifi Broadway NSW. Won't bore anyone with the details but I basically just asked for the best price if I bought a Surface Pro and the touch cover together.

The sales person gave me a price of:

  • 64gb $524 w touch cover
  • 128gb $603 w touch cover

If you don't get those prices at first, leave, go back and try a different sales person who looks motivated. The first guy I spoke to didn't really try, price I got from the second guy was some $30 cheaper.

Your mileage may vary, good luck.

  • well sheeit.. its closing the gap with the t100, u recon they would do 500 for 64gb with touch cover? which is a temp solution till power cover comes out.

No harm in trying, I didn't really haggle that much. The first price I got for it was $538, I left and deliberated about which one (64 vs 128) to get and spoke to someone else when I went back and got lower prices.

    • Doesn't come with Touch Cover at that price..

    • Sans cover.

  • Is this the 2012 or 2013 model?

    • 2012

    • +1

If this was the 2013 model, Microsoft would be announcing a gazillion dollar white-down around now :)

Since when did haggling become a bargain? A bargain should be available for everyone, not just the best ozbargainer!

Is going into a store and asking one simple question really that hard?

        exactly^

      • +7

No it's not, but results will vary, therefore not everyone is guaranteed the price that you got. You could very well be the only one to get it for this price.

        • +3

I doubt it, all I did was ask for the lowest price when buying the two together. No price matching, no need to get the manager involved. It's all off their computer system. I have said mileage may wary, and people are welcomed to try it out or not.

If they don't budge, just pump some vials of steroids and give em a good ol' fashioned hiding.

  • On another note…
Has anyone seen Type covers in stock? I'm looking around pretty hard for one. Need some sort of keyboard to type with while on the go.

JB HiFi at Southland (Vic) had a lot last weekend. I didn't buy because it was at RRP ($149) which I think isn't worth it. I'm holding out for a sub-$100 deal.

    • There were none about for some time - the ETA on them was March. But some have come through, and most stores should have stock (but likely not a lot).

      • most stores only have the Touch/Type 1 covers in stock. These are the non-backlit ones.

  • Will be wary of my mileage. Thanks OP.

  • pulled the trigger and got the 128gb, nice guy at JB gave the tablet alone for just 570$. if i knew i could have gotten the touch cover for 28 i would have considered it.

    • invoice please

      • yeah buddy post an invoice :D

  • Do you guys think the touch cover is worth it for a few months? I want the type backlit cover…once its ~100 and actually available

And one more question - has anyone charged the device using portable battery packs?
Are there any generic options, as I'd prefer to carry one around that can also charge my phone etc.
This is probably the only thing holding me back right now! Hard to find information online for some reason.

edit: I mean in terms of the cable, and power output. is 2A enough?

    cheers

I can confirm this, At JB Brisbane Central I just got the 128gb Surface Pro for $580.06 plus the touch keyboard for $10.20, total $590.26. They did not have any other keyboard / covers in stock and of course the Pro II's are not available. I think Microsoft has no idea how to distribute consumer products and is just about giving these Surface Pros away to appease customers. About the product, I connected it up at my wife's office and I have to say it is brilliant the way Windows 8 connects to other hardware and servers and consigures itself so easily. The touch keyboard is better than I thought it would be but I would never pay close to $100 retail for it.

    • Hi nevbuster,
any chance you could upload a copy of your receipt or send me via pm? Cheers

  • Wow, these things are getting so cheap. Did they really flop this bad to be so overstocked????

Bangs for bucks, this is a lot of computer for the money. I just can't justify based on battery life along though :( Great little machine apart from that!

    Still so very tempting….

I tried a couple of places in Sydney CBD. Neither would drop the price below $598. One didn't have the touch keyboard the other offered the keyboard for $75. I was dissapointed as I wanted one tonight.

    • If you were in the CBD, why didn't you just head to Broadway's JB where the OP bought theirs? :) Give that a shot tomorrow or something.

It is still quite a walk from where I am at and there is no guarantee they will price match.

        • +2

Went back to first place who didn't have the keyboard, today they had it and accepted the price match after checking with the manager. Thanks Op for the receipt.

  • I was able to buy a 128gb Surface Pro /w one Touch Cover 1, one Type Cover 2 for $690 and free Internet security; showed the guy the receipt from here, he agreed to do that price, then we added the Type cover 2 to the deal and a bit of haggling.

  • I think this is a fantastic deal for an average user.

I got, for my folks, the SP 128Gb for and touch cover for 598 in JBHIFI Brighton.

Had a look around and there was nothing close to amount of performance/screen quality for the price.

  • Hey guys I got offered 631 with touch cover yeah I know joke price. But 651 with type cover. Is that a good price for the 128gb

    • Nup, shouldn't pay over $600 for 128gb unit with touch cover.

      • 651 with type backlit cover???
        I know 631 isnt a bargain

  • Went to try my luck at hardly normal…
The guy didn't even bother to check anything and just keep saying "that's the best price".
Even after showing him the receipt, he just says "but that's a week old".
I shoulda say "so it should be cheaper now right?". :)
But I just say thanks and left

  • Amazing how quickly they've dropped in price! The surface pro 128gb was $770 in december!

I tried my luck at JBHIFI. Best they could do was $580 for the 128GB Surface pro and $110 for the Type cover ($690).
Ordered it from the MS store with education discount instead.

  • how to get a bigger picture of the receipt above? I try to click it but it only give me a blank page. cheers

  • Just bought one from JB Mt Druitt for $540. $581 seems to be the lowest they go without further haggling. Depends on the sales rep you talk to, I just said M$ had it for $540, didn't even mention that it's a student discount nor that it's out of stock now.
