good find. using the 'search 3 days either side' brings up the (very handy) matrix of availability… seems to be quite a few dates earlier and later at that price (for Syd)

    thanks tightarse !

      The pleasure's all mine.

    You are a legend tightarse

    Thank you so much

What's with all the love? Thanks champ!

  • +1

Damnit! Now I have to go to LAX twice.

  • Whats the normal (cheap) price for flights to America?

    • $1090 from GC was considered cheap 2 months ago as per this post

  • +1

That is so cheap. No wonder airlines are in trouble. I remember paying $1300 return in 2010 Brisbane - LAX and that was considered hell cheap at the time. Great deal tho!

Air NZ actually runs a profit. Compare that to our over-priced local outfit…

      • yeah but the unions are solely to blame /s/

      • The east coast to LA flights are some of the few international routes that Qantas actually makes a profit on. I'm sure they'd love to just drop all international routes except to LA & London.

        • +1

Unfortunately Qantas makes a Loss on London, speculation is arising that the daily MEL - LON may be axed to free up A380s for the Dallas route.

        • A380s are too fuel hungry. They carry a few more passengers compared to a 777-300 but burn quite a lot more fuel per passender kilometre. Only problem is, Qantas squandered their chance to upgrade to 777s. The only airline out of the world top 20 not to fly one. Thank you Mr Dixon.

        • +1

Said this countless time on here, but the 777-300ER was not suitable for their routes up until very recent years, in which the 787 looked near enough they would not have to worry. The 787 delays are at the heart of the Qantas problem right now.

Also, the comment about the fuel burn is somewhat exaggerated, look at the Emirates 777-300er, they manage to squeeze 310 economy (in 10 abreast seating, arghh), 42 angled high density business seats and only 8 first suites. Compared to Qantas who fits almost double the first class at 14, 64 fully flat (more space consuming) business class seats, 371 economy seats (61 more than EK 77W) and on top of that is 25 premium economy seats. The A380 really is a much bigger bird than the 77W unlike what most believe.

There is a reason Emirates has a fleet of 40+.

  • Great price pity timeframe to book it!

omg, how can i explain this trip to the boss….

  • Choice, Bro!

STA travel just sent me a link to the same Air new zealand flights though them.
Prices start from $915 ex MEL. Hope the link below works for you.
    http://www.statravel.com.au/air-new-zealand.htm?WT.mc_id=em_…

    • $919 from Adelaide - nice!
      LAX: Third time's a charm.

  • Does anyone know which bucket this fare books into?

  • Wow. I paid $1500 Brisbane to LAX return on Qantas and thought that was cheap. Boy was I wrong.

    • +2

      That is cheap :P
Considering you are paying for the QF premium and flying direct and no need for a stop over.

      • +1

Yeah, stopover is mildly annoying, though Air NZ are definitely a great airline to travel on.

  • Loved flying with them :) would fly again :)

  • The title's a bit misleading.

The offer is actually $200 off, not the price in the title. The dates listed say when you can get the discount, but the price is actually in the $2000 range for a fair whack of those dates as well, even after the discount.

    • Confirmed a $940 fare MEL-LAX return. True, it was hidden amongst a vast matrix of 4-digit numbers, but it's there nonetheless. It was 13 May - 26 May, if you're interested. http://tinypic.com/r/2ls8v8k/8

    • Not misleading at all, I tried half a dozen random dates and got those prices or incredibly close to them (still under 1k) for 4 of them.

      • +1

The title should advertise the actual offer of $200 savings though, as per the previously linked offer.

It could say "From xxx." Instead it makes out that that is the price on those dates, which is not true.

        • Exactly. It's like HN having up to 50% off computers. If the title reads 50% off computers, leaving out the words "up to" changes the whole context of the deal, just as leaving out the word "from" does in this deal.

But I'm sure most people know airline prices are not fixed and that prices always start "from" a base price.

  • +3

Great price but only one checked bag at 23 kilo. That's pretty bad for america where most airlines have at least two luggage! And 23 kilo is not enuff for America! Shopping so cheap
    Extra luggage is 95 bucks….
Hawaiian airlines has two at 32kilos!

    • precisely

  • Woo!

Have just returned from the US, flying Air NZ. Flight was fine (forgot how long it was to the US, am used to flying back and forth to Asia!). Would recommend pre-purchasing the second suitcase though, we did get caught up trying to figure out how to get everything we bought home!

    • We plan to maximise our existing carryon entitlements. See how we go.

Booked two flights from Adelaide to LAX June to August. Paid a bit more with a choice of a slightly more expensive day and there are credit card fees of $15 per leg (four legs to LAX). However $2,235 in total for two of us return to the USA from Adelaide is fantastic. I am sure I paid more that $2500 for ONE return ticket to the LAX in the early 1990's !

    • I just found this on virgin

      Depart: Adelaide (ADL)
      Wed Jun 18 2014 07:00 AM

      Depart: Los Angeles (LAX)
      Thu Aug 14 2014 11:40 PM

      PRICE: $1876
One stop either in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. more luggage allowance.

I looked at a wide range of dates in June and August and for 3 weeks in August the return ticket only had about a $30 variance and in June the biggest variance I found was about $200 but generally there were LOTS of choice for dates at prices around and even less than this

My message: Check you dates with other airlines

Check your flight dates with Like a virgin.

My dates for Brisbane to LAX with this deal is $1322 but with like a virgin its $1199 and less travel time and direct flights instead of a stop over in Aukland

    • What are your dates? I checked late August - early September, and I got what the OP got, about $955.

Don't 100% agree with your policework there, def not work a neg.

      • then you and everyone else who has negged me are not reading correctly.

My comment and my neg is NOT based on saying that the OP is incorrect in any way, that the deal is bad and that you can't get prices that the OP has found. Therefore your comment is irrelevant to the point that I am making….. you are free to make it of course, but it is irrelevant.

I fully accept and HAVE SEEN that there are flights for around and even under $1000.

My neg is provided for one purpose only - to highlight that with some dates that you can get cheaper flights elsewhere. So before you book with this deal it will be best to check your dates with other carriers.

The reality is that within +/- 3 days of my search dates that the prices varied from $1021 to $2288. so CHECK YOUR DATES with other carriers - that is all that I am saying.

With every date except one day in that search Virgin was cheaper by between $100 and $700. Also, they gave me more baggage allowance than what this deal offers me.

Oh and you need to consider the extra $30 to pay by CC if you choose to do it that way.

so I'm trying to be helpful for those wanting to find the cheapest flight for their dates, I'm not being mean - that is possibly hard to understand because its fun to be mean and a smarty pants online. I'm being neither

        • Stop being so helpful, you're going to get negged!

        • I don't mind. Seriously. I'm not worried about politics and popularity. My comments are valid, the air new zealand deal is ok, but I consider saving a few hundred dollars with Virgin to be a much better deal.

Neg away, I really don't mind….this is the Internet and not what i base my life on but try to comprehend that I'm not being mean to the OP

To be clear…I am NOT agreeing with MelbBargainChaser77 et al.

        • I'm on the same page as you (hey, we all are….)

Though I always read 'from' as 'don't you dare pay a cent more'

  • Does anyone know how to apply this code if I do a multi stop purchase? Still flying Melb - LA return but on the way back to Australia I want to spend couple of days in Auckland, didnt give me the option when I tried

  • nice

  • I was at work checking flights and dates and found a few for $957 for the dates i wanted, gone to check it now and the flights i wanted have now gone up to $1052.

  • Thank you!!! Booked for travel in June to a cousin's wedding that I previously was going to miss because of ridiculous travel costs. Much appreciated :)

  • I was looking at QANTAS flights yesterday for Brisbane to LAX which worked out around the same price - just FYI everyone
