Is Woolies online shopping better value?

We just did a big shop and on some items we cleaned up. Mainly due to their policy that they will replace if they don't have stock with a similar item, even if its worth more. We purchased Porterhouse steak on special for $9 a kg times two serves at min 450g, total price $9. We got two packets of premium porterhouse at 600 and 650g and $17 and $18 ticketed price, total price $35. We ordered 200g of Jarlsburg cheese sliced, it was not in stock so it was replaced with 300g block of cheese valued at about $2 extra.

Are these offset by other things being more expensive? Or is shopping online better value if you get lucky?

  • you'll also get samples if you are lucky.

    • Coles gives me samples. I found Wollies online to be more expensive than in store, they also never delivered an order to me correct something was always missing/broken or just wrong.

I think my stuff came from an Unanderra warehouse. (~25km away from me, so if you are nearby beware)

  • +3

Generally I've found that the online prices are around 10% more expensive than my local store shelf prices (NSW, 2040). Sale (catalogue) items are identically priced online and in store.

    • +1

+1 this. Noticed exactly the same thing. I was surprised that the online prices were higher even for click and collect. How absurd.

  • I usually do well from it. You learn their system, like buying cheese wedges and other deli items by weight etc and some deli items. Input the minimum the system will accept…. eg. 0.1kg and you usually get the smallest item they actually have 2-300gr. Order 0.1kg Kabana… get a 220gr Kabana, you get the point.

You only pay for what you ordered. Works really well with meat items.

And as far a substitutes go they are very generous.

I usually stick mainly to the specials so the pricing is good. The gains you make elsewhere offset the 10% difference from in store to online.

  • Slightly off topic and may be a little silly: How do people here deal with the delivery times, especially for those working a full time 9-5 type job? I think they have windows for delivery periods.

I mean, are the deliveries timed well? Any real issues?

    • Real OzBargainers don't (need to) work ;-)

      • Tell that to Scotty who spends a lot of his time 'working' to keep it all happening. Same goes for the mods. Anyways, I am possibly looking to switch to ordering certain items online to save some time. Maybe some others are at the same point as me and still not completely convinced it is better for them.

        • Good point.

Thumbs up to Scotty and other OzB. staff! Thanks guys.
