free lifetime map is a "scam" in a way. you'd only get the updates as long as the gps device is supported.

Lifetime – this is the useful life of the device, which is the period of time that the manufacturer continues to support your device with software updates, services, content or accessories. A device will have reached the end of its life when none of these are available any more.

We bought a Garmin Nuvi 50 almost two years ago with "Lifetime Map Updates"… Never again. The free lifetime map updates simply don't happen.

We've had one free map update, that was about a month or two after we bought it. There are other map updates now waiting to be applied, but the Garmin application (Garmin Express) tells us we need to pay for these. Using the web interface we are also told that waiting map updates must be paid for.

We've emailed Garmin about this (more than a month ago) and apart from one reply telling us that, yes, we now need to pay for map updates, they've completely ignored us (and subsequent emails).

Yes we correctly registered our GPS when we bought it and yes we also correctly registered for the free map updates at the same time. We still have all the screen captures from that episode.

Garmin's phone number always goes to a voice recording, you can never speak to an actual human and they have thus far never returned our call. They took over two weeks to reply to our initial email enquiries as well. Support is practically non-existent .

I've read about GA's poor support. Seems it hasn't improved much. Simple solution is to take the device back to the store you bought it from (if you can) and get them to do the groundwork. If Garmin Australia won't respond then try the parent company in USA or your state consumer org. The free LMT has been a big selling point so if they aren't honouring the deal then they need to be brought to heel.

Apparently Garmin dropped Sensis as a supplier in 2012, so people with Sensis Lifetime Maps aren't getting any more updates.

I would assume the T&C are similar to the current ones that Evil-Elmo posted below, which specify:

"If you purchase a Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive map updates when and as such updates are made available on the Garmin website during the useful life of 1 compatible Garmin product or as long as Garmin receives map data from a third party supplier, whichever is shorter." (emphasis added)

Loads of complaints re this matter at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1996043

Does anyone know whether the Nuvi 40 is only compatible with Sensis maps? If so, the lifetime map update is absolutely redundant and its advertising is misleading.

    • Take unit back to store and request refund as it is not fit for purpose. As there is no lifetime maps. It does not and Did not match what was sold as the lifetime maps free.
Also it is unsafe, with all road works upgrades and closures, redoing of one ways one cannot be sure of how well unit works. (Dare I say, it is (road) overkill. Good luck.
After getting the expected response, you have full details to go to revelent authority and/ or credit card company for sale reverse?

  • Nuvi 40 does not have Traffic. OP where did you see Trafiic ?

  • Just buy a TomTom. Bought one recently and it always has updates available. Works great and haven't had an issue yet.

    • got a tomtom
but some road changes are never updated
      eg m5 speed change
too much to expect uers to tell them when even obvious changes are not updated.
the school zones are also not time sensitive.

      otherwise its OK
hard to get it to think logically if you want to travel without it taking you miles out of the way because you said tools are OK.
      GPS is not fuzzy logic?
so I travel a long way even when I know it is wrong because tomtom told me so
or gamin which I also bought once

That Lifetime maps offer has expired.

    From the terms on http://garminredemption.com/

"3. Promotion commences on 22/07/2013 and ends for purchases at close of business on 31/12/2013 (“Promotional Period”). Final claims close at 11.59pm AEDST on 31/12/2013 (for online claims) or last mail received on 15/01/2014 (for mail claims)."

    • offer should be amended here?

lifetime = how long the device is supported. I presume this would not be longer than 3 yrs.

    • That's a very good point. The "lifetime map" inclusion is actually worth nothing on an old model like this one.

    • That's not how I read the t&c…

"If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive map updates when and as such updates are made available on the Garmin website during the useful life of 1 compatible Garmin product or as long as Garmin receives map data from a third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic area included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. Third party content providers may change. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. If neither of the measures in (a) or (b) can be used to address your product’s lack of sufficient remaining memory, then Garmin may conclude that the “useful life” of your product has expired. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this agreement or your subscription. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another Garmin product.

Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. A traffic receiver’s “useful life” means the period during which the receiver (a) has the required technical capabilities to utilize current traffic data service and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. Traffic content not available in all areas. "

Evil-Elmo, I think you are focusing on the wrong part of that huge block of text. If someone has personal experience with this matter I would be happy to be proven wrong.

        The important part is:

"If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive map updates when and as such updates are made available on the Garmin website…"

My understanding is that map updates are compatible with model types, they are not applicable universally. As a product gets older, updates cease being released.

It's the same with pretty much all up-datable electronic products and software - android phones, versions of windows etc.

  • Lifetime Maps for free…ehhh people still get sucked into that? just lol.

    • Regardless of how long 'life' is supposed to be, it still beats forking out around $70 per year for the privilege.

      • Yeh but if you need a recent map, forking out $60 for this gps which was released in 2011 might be useless if no recent updates are available.

Also, the Nuvi 40 was available for $62.40 delivered 12 months ago according to this thread on whirlpool: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2030824
On that basis, this is not a good deal imo.

    Good price.
I got a Nuvi1350 about 2.5 years ago with free lifetime updates. I've had several updates (maybe 4 or 5) and they keep coming - had one just a few weeks ago. Sounds like it varies model to model.

  • I bought a nuvi 50 a couple of years ago. Has been good. Registered for lifetime map free update immediately after purchase. No problem getting free map update a couple of times every year using the garmin express software. But I found the speed limit and camera alerts incorrect, even after map update. And missing some cameras too… Quite dangerous when Gps tells u speed limit is 70 when the road sign says 60. Mate uses tomtom seems more accurate.

    • I use a TomTom, and it's far from accurate when it comes to speed zones. It comes back to users providing feedback I guess.

      • unreasobale ask from tomtom when they cant even use other databases eg maps to update their maps or traffic changes eg speed zones;

too many businesses get near enough
        but not good enough
