Difference is the car is a one off purchase, and $20 as a percentage of the price is negligible. 20% off the Stereo on the other hand is significant, and if you apply that across many similar value purchases it adds up. Saving a higher percentage of the price also leaves you feeling happier about the purchase, for getting a bargain.. So whilst 'your wallet doesn't know the difference', I don't think it's irrational by any means.

That example wasn't the best example of irrationality. A better one given by Dan was:

Situation 1: You go to the theatre and discover you've lost the ticket from your wallet. Buying a replacement will cost $50. Will you buy a replacement?

Situation 2: You go to the theatre to buy a ticket at the box office and discover you've lost a $50 bill from your wallet. Will you buy a ticket?

In first case people felt like they were paying $100 for a ticket and less likely to buy, even though the loss was the same in both cases.

      • You have a chance (albeit very slim) to find that $50.
If you find the movie ticket afterwards, its worth nothing.

        • The experimental subjects were told, that the ticket and the money were irretrievably lost in each case. Nonetheless, the subjects all baulked more at buying another ticket. So it wasn't to do with any such hope like that. It was feeling that they were overpaying for the show. The money wasn't mentally associated with the show, it came from a different mental account.

Perhaps that's why some people in the forum scream blue murder when they are charged postage for something they thought was free, but don't get nearly as upset over losing a gold coin during the day.
