Panasonic are good ones.. but recommend that you shop for Blu-ray version instead, given DVD is reaching end-of-life

I agree. I have the 250GB version of this and cannot fault it. I have not found any other brand that matches this for the price. Best feature is ability to watch things at 2x with the audio working (well about 1.7x roughly).

I bought into this for the odd occasion I might transfer something from the analogue inputs (on the back of the unit) to DVD format. I'm assuming it can be done easily and painlessly (at least I hope it can).

Plus the streaming features and so on (usually units like this are well-provisioned and purpose-built so I like them). DVD is still the 'lowest common denominator' format. I have no experience with these types of loungeroom DVD recorders but futzing around with the PC trying to encode some analogue stuff was a bit of a kludge last time I tried it (years ago) and it used quite a bit of CPU and took a while.

DVD is hardly reaching end-of-life. It will be around for many years more, even if at lower popularity. Just look at the shelves full of DVD movies and the heaps of players in people's homes. When you are giving recorded DVDs to people it's much more likely they will have a DVD player. Honestly most people will not care about the quality difference BR brings. And it's wasteful to burn a BR when a DVD will easily hold a movie.

The only reason you might want to buy the BR version is if you want to also play BR discs and you don't want duplication of equipment.

I have one of the older Panasonics PVRs and can't fault it. I like being able to watch recordings at higher speed with normal sound.

Yep. DVD is near-universal as a sharing format. Entry-level ($500+) 15.6-inch laptops still don't come with blu-ray playback as a standard feature in 2014 (let alone recording). It will be a while until Blu-ray reaches the ubuiquity of the DVD in PCs, let alone loungerooms.

Be careful when buying these brand name units with the intention of using the media player feature. Most have cinevia protection.

  • It looks like BigW have removed the Home Delivery and Click & Collect options. It looks like the bargain-hunter must now resort to chasing down stock in-store. That didn't last long. Good luck.

  • Hmm how would something like this compare to the PlayTV plugin on PS3? Besides the fact that this can burn/record on DVD, I think I'd rather record to a HDD (which PlayTV does).

It seems like it's just PlayTV with an additional DVD recording feature?

A couple of things I like about these PVRs: Can watch recordings at higher speed, can edit out ads before burning to DVD.

  • I've been looking around for a PVR and this one is definitely cheaper than all other competitors, tempted to buy one.

Does anyone know if it's capable of transferring video files to an external HDD via USB for watching on the laptop/pc?

No, unfortunately the only way to extract the recording is via the DVD. Then again there is a feature that allows you to stream a recording over the nework, it just might be possible to capture and save the stream. I seem to recall I used XBMC to view the stream. Or was it mplayer?

  • Unless you really need the dvd recording features, a Topfield or Beyonwiz PVR is a better option imho. These can easily transfer recordings to external hdd and PC for editing, sharing etc.

  • ONLINE PURCHASE NO LONGER AVAILABLE
Not available online to buy (Or click and collect as out of stock at their warehouse I suspect) and the ones in the store scan at full price (Around $440), the lady at Hillarys WA store said that as it is online only deal that BigW policy is not to honour those proces in store (Not really a shock, but would have been nice (They had about 4 in boxes on the shelf).
Maybe if you get a staff member who puts it through for you at this price, you may get lucky. I didn't.

Update to this one, I called the store by phone and asked for the manager, after speaking with her about their online and in staore price difference she said she was happy to match their own on line pricing.
So good news for me, and I assume that speaking with a store manager to get the price match of their own online price may be easy at any BigW store.
Got the player home and after setup I would compare this to the ease of using my MagicTV PVR unit that has been playing up lately, so half the price and still easy to use.

top show; I'm still waiting for my online order…

      • Just tried Watergardens store using your store's price match as a precedent, however no go - would not budge. Well done on scoring it for the online price.

Edit: just rang Sunshine, and they will match it if they have proof of another store matching the online price. Would you be able to post a copy of the receipt from the Hillary store. That can be used to get them to match the price. Much appreciated.

  • good one wood, thanks
    I might get one myself

  • BigW have gotten around to sending my order. The waiting game continues. I'm excited to get a status update after the long weekend :)

  • BigW are showing $398 now.
    The fun is over :)
