American Macbook Pro at $1083 + $99 for a power adaptor = $1182. Compared to $1214 for an Australian one at currently available at Dick Smith during a 10% off deal. Plus local warranties and consumer rights? Not much of a difference really.

    Link to Dick Smith deal
    Link to Apple Adaptor

Edit: Yes the model number is different but the only difference appears to be operating system and Mavericks is a free upgrade.

As this item has a value above AU$1000, it is liable for 10% GST.

So total $1022.91 (based on current exchange rate at xe.com) not including delivery + 10% GST = $1125.20 AU before delivery + $59.19 delivery = $1184.39 not adding GST on delivery. Plus $99 for a local adaptor = $1283.39.

      • 89 dollars for the charger from Harvey norman.

        • Alright then $1273.39, still more expensive than $1214 with free delivery over $99 from Dick Smith.

        • Don't forget the 5% duty fee as well. Also because the item itself is worth over $1000AU, the total price (the laptop, and the shipping fee) will be included in the GST calculation, makes it even more expensive.

This isn't a bargain at all.

      9% GST, not 10%

        Huh ???
Since when did GST change to 9% in Australia ???

        • It would be about 9% GST in US dollars as the exchange rate is about 90c/$1 when you factor in conversion costs.

No need to purchase a local adapter for $99 as it's universal. You could purchase the local cable like this one:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GENUINE-Apple-Power-Cord-Australi…

or just the "Duck Head" here:
    http://www.macfixit.com.au/apple-duck-head-australian.html

or take the Duck Head off the 10W adapter here:
    http://www.macfixit.com.au/apple-10w-2-1a-ac-to-usb-power-ad…

    • This is a good idea if you have purchased one but for those who haven't, the bargain to be had is minimal and doesn't include the local warranty and consumer guarantees.

All figures based on total cost of $1184.39 after conversion at current rate of 0.928936 USD, GST and delivery

      Option 1: Buy an ex-lease cable for $6.99 + $7.50 shipping = $1199.89, saving of $14.11
      Option 2: Buy a Duck Head adaptor for $12.95 + $9.90 shipping = $1206.24, saving of $7.76
      Option 3: Buy the 10W adaptor for $19.90 +$9.90 shipping = $1213.19, saving of $0.81

I'm not saying this is a good deal, just that you don't need to replace the power adapter. Even a $11 travel adapter would work.

Personally, the laptop has been great value, but one that was introduced in June 2012, and at the time it was only a "minor" refresh from the October 2011 model (which in itself was an even more minor refresh from the February 2011 model):

        • Bluetooth 4.0
        • USB 3.0 x2
        • slightly faster CPU and upgraded GPU
        • consequently support for two Thunderbolt Displays, up from one
        • 720p FaceTime HD Camera

They were introduced so close to each other both came with OS X 10.7 Lion.

So this isn't early or late 2011 tech, but it's at least mid 2012 tech, coming up to two months shy of two years old. Still great for Apple's last all-in-one laptops. But maybe consider an Air, or better yet, the Retina Pros.

    • Apple geniuses fairly frequently give away duckheads free if you ask nicely. I just said I'd misplaced mine and they were happy to give me a new one.

The genius needed to clarify whether I wanted the long cable or just the duckhead… which means that it might only be the latter that is free.

Wait a minute… where are the "should have bought a Windows laptop" mob?

    • I don't tell people to buy a windows laptop that often these days, Apple have actually got it going pretty well in terms of price & specs.

When the likes of Lenovo, Asus, Dell, etc can't put up a laptop with similar specs to these Apples for the price, there's no point recommending them.

      • Exactly. Perhaps Apple could learn something here and allow iPhones to bootcamp into Android OS…

  • same as uni pricing, easier to find someone whos a curent student and get them to buy it for you
