Ducted heating into Air conditioning aswell

I have an investment property which has been rented out for over a year and planning to take it back and do a bit of reno's before moving in.

one main thing i just realized that the house has a ducted heating system in all rooms of the house, the house is about 12 years old but there was no aircon installed and really didn't bother me as its generally cold in Melbourne.

But the main question is can the existing ducted heating system become an air con system too? as in i arrange a new inverted unit or whatever they are called installed?

Comments

  • is existing heating system gas? if so, could leave it there and add a/c only unit to the existing ducting.

get some local mobs out for a free quote. will get proper advice and prices.

    • Cooling ducts are usually much bigger than heating ducts as they are expected to shift much more air, especially in the case of evaporative cooling. A heating duct may be only 150mm whereas a cooling duct is 450mm.

  • what suburb are you in?

some installers use generic branded refrigeration cooling units to add onto your existing heater. However, you will need all new ducting.

Most (should be all) installers would recommend a whole rip out renew. A Brivis heater with add-on cooling would set you back 10k-14k. I use to sell heating and cooling full-time, but now I do something else, but i still sell heating and cooling on saturdays.

If it's an investment property, depending on the area, 10-14k is a bit much to invest. maybe go ducted Evap? Get cooling fully installed from 1/4-1/2 the price.

  • the property is in Sunshine West in the so called upper estate of "the avenue" the unit is gas with a little box on the wall the has a lever the controls the flow.

when the lease comes to end shortly i will call in the local tradie, if the only option is rip out and renew i will just get a wall unit in the main concerned rooms

    • Ye man, seems like a rip out renew. without being too obtrusive, whats the going rent rate there and expected renters? if its expensive, get something good like a Fujitsu. just as good as a Daikin, but hundreds less. Otherwise Brivis have also come out with budget splits. they aren't too bad, they don't carry the same bells as the bigger brands, but they are cheap and a well-trusted brand.

      hope my input helps

      • thanks mate i might go with the fujitsu, the house is a 3bed room 2 baths on a 500sq block. i get about 1500 per month and i am very picky and advised my agent on rules who gets to rent it, currently business owners are renting my place.

        • the Avenue side and Callaway park next door are the newer ( non commission) area of west sunshine.

        • ye man, sounds like you are pretty switched on with the renters situation. ye go for a fuji. the new ones have a new R22 gas. its meant to be more efficient. don't be fooled into getting the 'designer' range. its an extra 50-100 for a slightly better look. i prefer the standard one which looks good, and better airflow
