  • USB 3.0 docking stations always seem to use DisplayLink for the HDMI ports. Works fine in Windows, but some issues in Mac OS X, and Linux.

    • How else would you get HDMI over USB 3.0?

  • I looked into these a while back. Some people have drama's with compatibility and connectivity etc. But these are a great solution for workplaces where people connect and go with laptops or home laptop workstations.

These are under $160 any day of the week. MSY, Umart, PC Case Gear, etc etc…

Negging was harsh given that your prices (under $160) are ex delivery.

    • +2

Agree. This is OzBargain. Please do a quick 5 min research before you posting otherwise you will be negged/abused.

Negative vote, wow, you guys are harsh :)

Actually the advertised price from itech is $149 which looks reasonable compared to the alternatives mentioned. At least this deal is worth knowing about, no?

        • Come on, it's just a neg vote, not capital punishment !!

        • +1

Yes, but if not for capital punishment, where would Christianity be?

      MSY is $155 + $14.22 shipping + $3.38 CC fee = $172.60
      Umart is $159 + $16 shipping = $175

Upvoting for including shipping and CC fees. I only wish the sites themselves would do this!

  • Interesting, anyone know if it can handle twin 1920x1200 displays?

    • +2

Yes, but with caveats (I used a Samsung NP900X3F with 2 Dell U2412Ms):
      * It will eat up additional CPU cycles - playing a HD YouTube video would suck up between 20 and 30% CPU - laptop still ran fine but any heavier videos can cause stuttering. Definitely no gaming, but otherwise internet browsing and office use ran without a hitch.
      * Not sure if this is just me, but there was a memory leak with the drivers on Windows 8 when using the onboard LAN - basically the memory usage of the drivers would increase in line with the amount of data transferred over LAN, to the point where the computer would lock up due to lack of memory. Didn't have this issue on Windows 7 or when I used the computer's LAN port.

I'm using this exact device right now. I have two 1920x1200 monitors coming out the back of it, plus my laptop monitor running at 1920x1200 too. There's an HDMI on the laptop that comes off the internal video card .. so I guess I could theoretically plug yet another monitor in there and have four.

The only glitch I (extremely) occasionally get is the mouse being laggy for a quarter second which feels more driver based than speed of the device. The USB3.0 ports are full speed (I can transfer data to an external USB3.0 drive at about 100MB/sec)

This thing is an awesome solution for using your laptop as a portable desktop. I run one at the office and one at home. The laptop screen and keyboard is only used when I'm in neither place.

(Win 8.1 / Current model Dell laptop with i7 and 16GB RAM)

  • What is the point of having USB2.0 ports on this? Waste of potential USB3.0 ports.

    • +1

I'm sure they expect people to plug in a keyboard and mouse into it, since it's meant to be a one-data-cable-dock solution. USB3 would be pointless for those.

Squeezing four USB 3.0 ports through one USB 3.0 interface to the host computer could be pointless too!
