Cheapest place to buy kegs in Melbourne?

I'm having a party in a few weeks and need to buy couple of kegs, probably Kopparberg and Carlton Draught.

Does anyone know the cheapest place in Melbourne to buy kegs from? Cheapest place I can find is Hire-A-Keg. If anyone knows anywhere that is cheaper and has more variety please share.

Kegs are one of those things that seem like a good idea, until you actually crunch the numbers as the $ per L is good until you factor in the additional cost to hire the dispensing equiptment:

    Carlton Draught 24 x 375mL = 9.00L
    $45.99 = $5.11 per L

    Carlton Draught 50L Keg
    $225 + $70 = $5.90 per L

    Carlton Draught 2 x 50L Keg
    $450 + $70 = $5.20 per L

    Carlton Draught 3 x 50L Keg
    $675 + $70 = $4.97 per L

So you would need to buy 3 kegs (an outlay of $745) to beat the value of buying a slab at normal prices. Often CD slabs will go on special for <$40 - which would mean even better value.

    • My partners sister already has the dispensing equipment so that won't be an issue.

I think 3 kegs will be too much. We're having about 130 guests, but we will also have 12 bottle of spirits as well.

Well then the keg by itself will represent better per L value, but you must drink over 44L from each keg to still be better value than buying slabs. Also remember that any remaining beer will have to be returned with the kegs - so if you only drink 30L out of the 50L then you can either return the remaining 20L, or pay to have it longer.

If you have 130 guests, and they will all be drinking then 2 kegs would be more than enough (probably too much) - but everyone will have to have at least 2 drinks each to use it all. You know many will not drink the beer (abstaining or having spirits), then 1 keg should suffice.

I'd strongly recommend just buying slabs because you can have a much greater variety of beers - and anything that isn't used you can keep and use as necessary later on. Even without the equipment hire, best case scenario with a keg is that you save ~$0.50 per L - but run the risk of costing you dramatically more if it isn't all used on the night.

        • this man speaks the truth!

        • Well the Kopparberg comes in 30L and CD in 50L. The Kopparberg will get finished first because I know that most of the ladies who will be drinking strawberry cider, but I will consider just buying one keg if majority won't be drinking beer.

Anyway thanks for your feedback, but trying not to go off topic as per title says I am just after the cheapest place to buy kegs as this is the first time I am shopping around for one.
