drive-away price in VIC is close to 100k
So does it cost more to ship an electric car to AU ?

    • +5

The shipping cost probably won't compare to what it would cost to move the steering wheel to the right side of the car. :)

      • They make the Roadster in RHD.

        • +1

That's because the Roadster was based on a Lotus Elise chassis, which is British and so already available in RHD.

      • +1

Imagine PCCG's shipping charge. It'd be twice the price of the car itself.

      • Let alone the stamp duty, import tax and luxury car taxes. :D

  • +20

In all fairness, these shit all over most other medium-large luxury sedans

    They've priced it fairly well.

    • +3

This is true in regards to pricing. They are selling for the same price overseas and we all know Australians get inflated prices for no reason for most stuff, but it doesn't seem to be the case for this product.

    • +50

not interested in fairness, here in OzBargainland, Matt!

We are interested in (in the following order):

      1) - Bad puns
      2) - Saving a buck (even if we have to buy something we don't want or need)
      3) - make fun of jv
      4) - completely deride someone who is making a useful and helpful point that would benefit the community at large if their happens to be one grammatical or spelling error in the post.

      • +11

        5) - Finding weird and wonderful ways to use our ING Direct card

        • +6

        • You're a pompous ass…. Did I get it right? :)

      • You spelled THERE wrong - you @#$@#%! ;-p…

  • +18

good to see them in Australia… now get that price down to $50k and we'll talk

    • wrong terminal!

  • +14

I bought shares in Tesla @ $28.. Still holding on!

Eventually I will sell them when the shares can pay for one.. Half way there.
    Now that's a bargain! !

Anyway, this is still a pretty good price considering the technology and safety and performance..
. Love this company and the cars

    • +4

wow nice investment - shares are about $200 at the moment.
great turnover, i assume you've had your money with them for only about three years :)

      • Yep! Right on.. I think there going to double soon so keep an eye on them.

        • +2

double might be wishful thinking … but in saying that i'll keep my eye on them and hope for your sake they do :)

    • +1

      Nice. Well played.

  • -6

    So.. Where's the discount?
    This is just RRP.
How is an announcement a bargain?

  • +31

    Price mark-ups for Australia is always interesting reading. In the USA the;
    Mercedes E63 is US$92,770, here $251,400.
    BMW M5 is US$92,900, here $229,900.
    Tesla P85 is US$93,400, here $134,295 including on-roads.
The P85 is about the same price as the M5 and E63 in the USA, but here it's more than $100,000 cheaper on road. Thereby, the Tesla could be considered some-what as a bargain.

    • +2

Correct… This is because of the free trade agreement we have with manufactured goods in the USA.

    • Except not always, Lotus, Fiat (alfa romeo ect.) normally just add another 20k ontop.

      • +8

Hold up!!! Alfa Romeo's??? Anyone who buys one deserves to be slapped with an extra 20k tax levy. That's how much you'll be paying the first year out of its warranty..

        " it's not a car, it's an Alfa Romeo"

        Oh… My worst!!!!!

OzBargain beware of Alfa Romeo!!! Not a bargain car

        • +1

You haven't heard of the 4C?

  • +1

Once we have superchargers installed, you will get free electricity and never pay to recharge for the life of the car.

    Superchargers? Free electricity?

    • that makes no sense at all

Tesla has placed 240v charging stations over the place in the US but they arent free

you have to pay to charge your car

      • I believe you can still charge it at home, the charging stations are there for long commutes

        • +6

          Ozbargainers would charge at work.

      • +20

That's why u go to Westfield's fire exits which all have multiple power sockets at every 2nd set of stairs and then using long extension leads, u can charge ur Tesla free whilst shopping at discount base..

        Bargain!!!!

      • +1

You only have to pay to charge if it's the base model. The chargers that they have built charge the car much much faster than using a domestic power point.

      • Incorrect. I think you pay a surcharge upfront and then it's free for life.

    • -1

Is there a life-time free of charge (reverse pun?) guarantee? I'd assume that after a while they will start to charge new customers? (Pun again).

      • Elon has recently said the Supercharge stations in the states will always be free for tesla owners.
Haven't heard if the same offer will be made here though

      • +3

When your joke is so obscure that you have to tell people you are joking so they know what to laugh at, it kind of becomes pointless.

        • Haha that was funnier than the joke

  • -2

    thanks OP bought 4

  • +1

Let me sell all the bloody cameras I've bought coz of Ozbargain and I can hopefully afford one…

    • +1

If you sell the torches as well you might be able to afford the more up-spec model ;)

      • Flashlights and cameras…

        That's me in a nutshell.

  • I'm going to Broden the hell out of this deal.

Toyota 86 should also be a deal on here, not much mark up compared to the scion(86) in the US. A real drivers car which can be had for 30k driveaway if you get a demo '13 model at EOFY. Steal.

    • Not much markup compared to US for FR-S/86???

      US automatic cost = $1100. Aus automatic cost = $2800. Mark up = 254%.
US dealer delivery cost = $755. Aus dealer delivery = $2000. Mark up = 265%.
US metallic paint charge = $0. Aus metallic paint charge = $450.

      • -6

Those are extras, look at the stock model in white, with no stupid "preium packages", who would want auto anyway with a performance car.

        • +2

White also costs $450 extra. The only colour that's "free" is Mount Fuji Red, which is a solid/non-metallic shade. My point is that if you want an automatic in a colour that isn't red, you're looking at $5250 in extra charges, compared with $1855 in the USA. That's a 283% markup. Plenty of people want automatic - they want the sporty looks, but without the hassle. Let's face it, this is not a "performance car" as you put it, it's a poser car for most (as if more than 1 in 10 are going to actually take it to the track?). 0-100 in 7.6 seconds is not a "performance" car - a Toyota Aurion is faster than that.

        • -1

When the 86 first came out it was the manual GTS that had an 18 month waiting list, while people had less trouble getting their hands on an auto GT. This was with a 50/50 split between transmissions.

This is no performance car stock, but why does that matter in a sports car? Sure some people may never push the car hard, but the same can be said of a performance car who can never go top speed outside of a track.

A hairdresser's car is something like the Veloster.

  • +2

    where's jv?

    • Looking for Eneloops battery to recharge his car

  • for an even bigger bargain…. move to the ACT and save $1000s on stamp duty

  • +2

How many Eneloops do I need to get this to run?

  • -1

Waiting for the dx.com sale on these

  • 0-100 in 5.6. Not bad. Faster than a 2014 wrx lol.

    • I read 4.4, but maybe it was the better model.

Most electricity still comes from burning coal. How could electric cars be environmentally friendly

    • +1

      Al gore brah.

    • -1

Yes electric cars aren't very environmentally friendly as of now.. maybe in the future though.

    • +5

Apparently they are nonetheless more environmentally friendly than petrol cars: http://shrinkthatfootprint.com/electric-cars-green

And in the future when electric power generation itself is more green, electric cars will be even greener.

      • and if they paint the cars green as well…

      • -2

It should be noted that I am not a fan of electric vehicles ATM. However FWIW I do believe there is some conjecture over how much CO2 is released over the lifetime of electric vehicles and how much overall advantage there is in purchasing one.

        Carry on.

    • +1

25% of South Australia's power comes from renewable energy, mostly from wind. For 3c per kWh more I can have my energy provider source all the power I use from renewable sources. The argument that these cars are just as bad as petrol or diesel vehicles is pretty weak.

      • +1

A real stupid statement to make money off the fools.

sorry but how does this work? Think about how your energy is supplied to you house and the keep your 3c per kw.

        • +1

The energy providers are up front about this.

You're right, Origin, AGL or whoever do not guarantee the electrons provided to your particular household will come from a renewable source, but they do state if you pay the extra charge they are required to buy as much renewable energy from generators somewhere on the grid as you use. It's an audited process. The extra charge makes sense due to the fact that renewable energy is more expensive than coal or gas.

    • +4

Environmentally friendly as no soldiers died to ensure a flow of oil.

    • If you charge it at night then it's off peak and the base load power still supplies a large amount of wasted power. Or charge it in the day if you have solar power.
