  • seems too cheap but they've sold almost 6000 of them.

  • Apparently 5800+ sold so far… so I'm a little sceptical. *8v/

    • +2

But Amazon won't ship the Surface tablets to Australia. :(

      • Use a mail forwarder. Problem solved.

  • They had a similar sale on the tablet a few weeks ago and everyone seems to have gotten them in the feedback.

  • Will there be any issues with charging this? Do I need a converter etc?

    • +4

Nope; just use a plug adaptor or if it has a power cable, just buy an Australian cable. I went and bought a Pro charger in Japan, and just changed the cable. BTW, the Pro charger is more powerful and charges faster.

      • Thanks mate.

  • +19

I'm sure you guys know this already but just to point it out for others.

This is the surface with Windows RT and not Windows 8(8.1) so not too sure if this will deter some from buying.

    • +1

Windows RT gets the 8.1 update 1 features and includes Office 2013 however you can't install software outside of the Microsoft Store.

      • +1

So the only software that can be used & installed on it has to be bought & downloaded from the Microsoft store? What does the 8.1 update give the RT as it only normally comes with IE, basic office apps like word & excel…anything else?

    • At this price I can live with it :)

      • +2

I've got the RT 32GB model. I bought for $225 during black Friday sales. The office package is pretty sweet. The battery is good and has a real nice build quality feel. The USB port is pretty handy, it runs portable hard drives, printers and other devices unlike some tablets. My only complaint is I can't run macros in excel, lol.

    • What is the difference between the RT & 8.1 version? Is it just that RT can only have basic office apps & cant have other software installed as mentioned above?

      • +8

This is from the Microsoft FAQ.

Windows RT 8.1 contains many of the same features as Windows 8.1, but is designed for thin and light PCs that use ARM processors. Some of the features of both Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 are:

        • Fluid, intuitive, and easy-to-use interface design that you can easily customize
        • Built-in apps like Mail, Calendar, Photos, and OneDrive, with many more apps available from the Windows Store
        • Internet Explorer 11, for fast, intuitive browsing
        • Designed for touch, so you can interact with Windows in a whole new way
        • Designed for mouse and keyboard, so you can be as productive as you need to be

Windows RT 8.1 also includes some different features:

        • Windows Update and Windows Defender are always on and up-to-date, making your PC more secure.
        • BitLocker technology provides enhanced data protection to help keep your information more secure.
        • All Windows RT 8.1 PCs use InstantGo to turn on instantly and keep tiles and other online services up-to-date even when the screen is off (not all Windows 8.1 PCs have InstantGo).
        • Comes with Office 2013 RT, providing you with touch-optimized desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook. For more details, see the Office 2013 RT product page.

Some features aren't included in Windows RT 8.1:

        • Windows Media Player
        • Windows Media Centre
        • HomeGroup creation (you can join an existing HomeGroup but you can't create a new one)
        • The ability to connect to your Windows RT 8.1 PC from another PC using Remote Desktop
        • Domain join

With Windows RT 8.1, you can install apps directly from the Windows Store, but you can't install desktop apps that you used with previous versions of Windows.

You can only install printers, mice, keyboards, and other devices that have the Designed for Windows RT logo. For more info, see the Compare Windows page and the Windows RT disclaimer.

        • Thanks for the reply, it was very helpful.

  • +2

I bought the 32gb model late last year for low 200's when Microsoft was doing a sale. As ProjectZero mentioned, remember this is RT not full Windows. Also the first RT model had some short comings, it does get a little laggy at times and it is the only Surface that is not Miracast compliant which I found really annoying. Personally I'd spend the extra and get the Surface 2 if you're really that keen on RT.

  • Damn this is a good price. I wouldn't want the touch cover (think type cover is far better) so I investigated US eBay and it seems you can pick up brand new 64GB ones for US$250.48 when not in a bundle. If you don't want the touch cover (like me) and would be planning to buy a type cover separately this would save a few $

  • These RT tablets were found next to the Atari E.T. cartridges during the dig for failed products that got buried.

    • -4

How is it that these have failed when quite simply put in just this ebay listing almost 6000 have been sold

      • -2

because Microsoft have abandoned RT. Simple really.

        • abandoned? Aren't they just rolling it into Windows Phone to be one product? Just like iOS

        • -3

          lol, that's phunny.

      • +1

Because Microsoft are selling these at a loss, they predicted high sales at their original price that didn't happen creating a $900 million loss for 2013 on the Surface series. They've cut the price to sell the stock they manufactured to reduce their total losses.

  • For that money there are better tablets available imho

    • I'm interested to hear what other options are available at this price range which is better?

I would always but this over the Windows RT device.

        • So you would rather pay the same price for a refurbished tablet than a brand new microsoft tablet? I hope your joking

        • +6

No, not joking at all. With a proper WIndows device i can still do more then with the brand new Microsoft tablet. Besides that Asus refurbished devices are as new

        • +4

Interestingly the Windows device here runs ARM vs the Android device here runs x86…

        • +1

"So you would rather pay the same price for a refurbished tablet than a brand new microsoft tablet? I hope your joking"

I'd rather the better product if I'm paying the same money, and the Surface in this case ain't the better product.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/149185
          This easily beats both.

        • +1

"Interestingly the Windows device here runs ARM vs the Android device here runs x86"

There's no Android device here? Looks like ARM for the RT Surface and an Atom for the Windows 8 Eee Pad?

        • +3

@dosada, that's an interesting alternative you provide. Thing is I can't work out if I want RT or full windows? I know all the pros/cons of each, but the lightweight-ness and 'instant-on' functionality of RT makes it more handy for a tablet beside the couch. As an addition to my full PC, not a replacement.

Anyway, thanks for posting that eee-pad

        • +2

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/149185
          This easily beats both.

I would't say so particularly, Surface RT does a really good job Clear Type display (despite the "low res") and notebookcheck's review of the Memo Pad FHD didn't praise the screen visibility too highly. Also a full blown Office Suite which is optimised for RT, more than I can say for Android (as much as I wish it did, best alternative I've used is Quick Office, and that's no MS Word).

        • For the second day time, it's not Android, it's full W8

        • Sorry referring to me? I'm talking about the Memo Pad HD 10.1 which was linked by alittlelewd that says it beats both of them.

        • For some reason people think we are talking about this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/149185

        • I wouldn't say it beats both of them. For Android, it may not be as productive as the full windows tablet. To Run a large pdf file or do some MS work, Android is not so good.

  • Pity its not the PRO version..

  • It seems that Windows RT is a major blow due to the lack of apps it can never replace laptop nor ipad.

Most review recommends wait for Surface Pro which runs full Windows 8.

This is a good price, but doesn't fit my purpose.

    • Windows RT is a major blow due to the lack of apps it can never replace laptop nor ipad

The Surface is not meant to replace a laptop. I think you're missing the point of tablets. And yes it does replace an iPad, do you think you can install third party software on an iPad???

wait for Surface Pro which runs full Windows 8

Surface Pro has been out for years. Do you know what you are talking about?

      • -6

do you think you can install third party software on an iPad???

You can install third-party software on iPads. The App store is full of third-party software; tens of thousands of titles.

        • +4

I believe apate means third party in the sense of independent of the app store rather than "third party" produced apps. If an app isn't available from the App Store then generally you can't install it on iOS.

      • -2

the windows surface is a pos. its fiddly, has poor aps , the only good thing is office. but if your going to use office a lot just get a thin latop? there is no market for it. which is why it flopped , even at this cheap price i cant think of a good enough use for it…

    • It all depends n your usage. If all you do is go on Facebook, watch youtube and go on ozbargain. Windows RT can replace your iPad and your laptop. If you want you can even run Outlook 2013 RT of Windows Office RT. But if you want to play Dota 2 or Skyrim then you won't really be able to do that (unless there's some easy way of streaming from a PC I'm not aware of).

      • +4

teamviewer and splashtop are available on the Surface RT.

Both would be suitable for streaming a PC to the surface.

  • I was looking forward the new Surface but useless if I can't install other software!

Is it possible to install non-microsoft software on PRO version?

    • +1

yes, on the pro version you can install pretty much anything that can be installed on windows

    • +4

Think of it in this [simplified] way:

Microsoft Surface / Surface 2 runs Windows RT (which is like saying it runs Windows Phone). It's like an iPad - you can only install apps from the Windows Phone store (like iTunes store).

Microsoft Surface Pro / Surface Pro 2 runs full Windows 8 (like your PC desktop/laptop). You can install anything you could on your desktop PC running Windows 8

  • Nice hardware for the price. But thanks to SecureBoot(tm), you cannot upgrade the software to something decent.

  • +2

You know what, I'm going to buy one of these because a guy on TV with a British accent tells me how great they are. If he had an Aussie accent, I wouldn't care, but the British accent has me sold.

  • +2

I have surface RT 64 gb with touch cover. I got my for 428 dollars. Its really nice device.

    Short review of this device.
+Great battery life.(I can sometimes get more than 2 days with moderate use)
+Internet explorer 11 with flash player built in.
+Free Microsoft office 2013 installed in this device.
+It have a real USB 2.0 slot. (that means u can attach mouse, printers, Xbox 360 gamepads, Portable hard disks etc to it.)
+Have most loved File explorer(just like full blown windows os). Moving editing renaming files etc is much easier.
+MS services lot easier to use. e.g. Skype, Hotmail one drive etc. you dont need to login again. And uploading files to one drive is really easy. copy paste file in one drive folder and its uploaded.
-Cant install Legacy software. you can not run exe files on it.
-Ms store is much better now but still behind android or app store.
-Turning this thing on is pain in ass. you have to press power button again and again to turn it on. Easy workaround this is dont let ur battery die and dont turn it off.

You guys know about android tablets or ipads. you can compare your self :D

I use it for my study purpose. It runs pdf files better than any tablet(in my opinion). And i use it for playing some games like gta san andreas or GBA, Snes emulators with Xbox 360 controller. But you guys can make better use of the USB port on this device than me.

  • +1

Okay price for 2 year old tech. Could be used as a student as it comes with the office suite. However, limited to internet explorer, really crappy windows store, poor res screen for movies, 1 setting kick stand as opposed to surface 2 and surface pro 3.

If you're looking for a tablet, I would go for the ipad anyday due to it's app store.

  • +1

Simply check the app store - if the apps you use from iTunes are also in the Windows Store, its a no brainer, these RT tablets are much much better, far more productive and versatile than ipads (I own both & don't care for either company).

  • +1

Great deal…got mine last time for $229 and love it….bigger screen than ipad, much lighter than pro2, fast enough and it is best value for money tablet for someone that needs it for emails, internet, office apps, watching movies on wide screen and a descent number of games are available for it….. havent touched my ipad or nexus since….

  • Can you playback 720p MKV videos on win RT yet?
I don't want to convert or run a transcoding server, need local playback capabilities..
Can't find a straight forward answer by Googling.. :(

    • Last time a checked (2-3 months ago), you cannot. You can buy an app which runs mkv but it's laggy a lot of the time. VLC is making an app for the store so I'm not sure if it's out yet.

      • There are 20+ VLC clones but I've not tried any of them

      • There are applications that can run mkv. But good one are not for free. I m using some Chinese app for videos. That is free and better than most paid apps.

Video converter is also available on rt but getting good player is better. I think power DVD is best paid app for videos.

      • bugger.. that's also what I'm seeing - VLC will soon bring out a RT Metro app - but they've been saying that for a loooong time..
Biggest reason why I can't pull the trigger on a RT tablet purchase - can't watch most of my movies/shows, rendering it close to useless :(

        • i use media player pro, mkv support costs <$2

most of my media playback is streamed via Plex - no issues - & I believe the phone and rt/tablet version of plex is now a universal app (buy one get the other included)

  • chur chur…. now $278 lighter - buy now regret later…

  • One of my dislikes about this tablet is that it automatically updates and there is no way of changing the settings for this so it chews up my megabytes when I tether from my phone :(.

    • +2

it should detect a "metered internet connection" and then auto limit your updates (and other things)…..maybe worthwhile checking your settings

    • @shiningstars: Actually, there is, as I had to quickly figure it out while I was overseas and tethering to my mobile on international roaming data rates. I needed to collect my e-mail, but Windows RT insisted on also downloading several hundred megabytes of updates in the background.

Just kill the Windows Update service as the administrator, that'd stop the automatic updates.

@reddulf: The Surface does not have a built-in modem or SIM slot, and thus it has no concept of a metered cellular mobile data network connection. You cannot elect to mark a Wi-Fi connection (on the basis of particular SSIDs or otherwise) as metered in Windows RT, as far as I know, and the Surface cannot distinguish between connecting to a mobile phone-cum-hotspot by Wi-Fi, your home broadband gateway/router, or a free Wi-Fi service at the airport or a hotel lobby or your local café.

      • +1

" and thus it has no concept of a metered cellular mobile data network connection"

Mine does and Microsoft thinks it does too - ive particularly noticed it when tethered and downloading email - it presents a warning on data usage with the option to ignore..

        http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-au/support/performance-a…

        • +1

You are right about one thing and wrong about the other, as am I (in reverse).

Your Surface tablet – as with mine – has neither a built-in modem nor a SIM card slot. I know that to be true, since Microsoft did not make a variant of the Surface that has cellular mobile network connectivity. That means even though the Surface RT operating system is capable of handling a metered cellular mobile data network connection, it can never detect or represent one on the Surface tablet. Nothing is ever going to show under Mobile broadband, per step 3 of the article to which you linked. So, you are wrong and I arm right on this one.

However, I'm surprised to find out this morning that you can nevertheless click through on a specific Wi-Fi network connection in the modern UI settings, and mark it as metered. That means it is possible to have a metered Wi-Fi network connection, regardless of whether it is actually connected to a personal phone-cum-hotspot or an ADSL broadband gateway, as long as the administrative user says so. I am wrong and you are right on this one.

I learned something new today, so thank you.

        • "it can never detect or represent one on the Surface tablet."….interesting, mine does whenever tethered or as I just recalled, using my inlaws mobile broadband wifi modem - as I said, I get warning notification when opening emails about "a metered connection" with option to ignore and download email/attachments anyway - I have never seen this warning at home nor at university nor at 2nd residence. I have never manually set any network as metered.

          ???

  • -2

Can't do much with windows rt. Just like a big windows phone, but with even less apps and no call functionality.

E.g eBay is pretty much just the mobile version and so too with YouTube.

    • +2

Just like a big Windows Phone, you say? I have the Nokia Lumia 920 (WP8), and the HTC 7 Mozart (WP7) before that. Have you tried doing a pivot table in the version of Excel on a Windows Phone 8 handset? I uploaded one of my 2MB Excel workbooks with lots of data rows and several pivot tables to my Surface tablet, and as so pleasantly surprised Excel on the Surface handled it perfectly, just like on my PC. Can't say that for my handsets – and of course neither WP7 nor WP8 comes with Outlook 2013.

What about handling a 500-page technical document in PDF?

WP8 does not even offer a HID Bluetooth profile for keyboards, so there is no way of efficiently or comfortably do significant amounts of text entry on a Windows Phone handset, while the Surface running Windows RT will connect to unpowered Touch Cover or Type Cover keyboards, wired USB keyboards, as well as independently powered Bluetooth keyboards.

No, it is not “just like a big Windows Phone” at all. Tablets are not all about entertainment; many people use their computing devices for productivity, and the Surface tablet happens to be a very capable device for run-of-the-mill office productivity, while being ultraportable (on the basis of size, weight, and battery life) and cheap (at this price).

    • +2

So many nay Sayers without ever even playing with these surfaces (let alone owning one).

  • anyone received theirs yet?

    • update- received mine, very nice unit.

  • I just checked out the rest of the sellers store and they seem to deal with refurbished products mostly.

Before you buy please make sure you read any fine print that they have as it could be a refurb unit but just not making it sit front and center.
