Seriously cheap NOW (was $54.69 delivered) for a quad core android box.
Its not the best one around though, so probably not good for those who aren't interested in playing with it to make it work best.

  • I would buy this but the last one I bought from Geekbuying the MK809III the WiFi died on me and when I check the postage and handling to get it back to Geekbuying it was half of the price I paid.

So be careful of these cheap sticks, buy them but beware of the quality of them.

This is the one I bought http://www.geekbuying.com/item/US-Plug-QC802-Google-Android-…

Otherwise the sticks are great although slightly underpowered for 1080p output as I had a lot of frame skipping to keep up. This was through MX Player H/W decoder, H/W + was worse.

Played around with flashing different ROMS from FreakTab as well to boost the speed, but the frame skipping was evident. 720p was smooth as butter though.

    • how was wifi ?

      • How was WiFi, in what context?

Speed was normal I could stream off it. But a dead WiFi means 0mbps so at the moment it isn't really good.

    • mine also died in the ass
I noticed the SOC getting really really warm before this, in hindsight i should have wacked on a heatsink and some cooling vents, poor design.

      • Mine had a thermal pad on the CPU but it did get warm. But I would say that the reason for the downclock as well to keep them within spec.

I don't see many RK3188 now in TV dongles now that the T variant is out.

  • No warranty…..

I've been buying alot of different android boxes lately for friends/family. XBMC is a wonderful thing :)
The best I've used so far was the CS968. Boy that was a smooth device.

The worst? This one. The MK918. There are no working alternate roms (you can grab the kernel from this one and mix/match with other firmware but it's not worth it).
It's slow (slower than a dual core), so almost unusable with XBMC (even beyond XBMC) and it crashes alot.
Even if you can get XBMC going okay(ish), the audio is out of sync and though xbmc can compensate for that, it than puts other videos off sync.

    Avoid this one.

    • I am going to setup for XBMC, you said that CS968 is smooth, did you mean this one:
      TV01(CS968) RK3188T Quad Core Google Android 4.2 OS Cortex-A9 1.4GHz Mini TV BOX 2G/8G Bluetooth/Mic/Camera/RJ45/External Wifi Antenna,
      let me know, many thanks,

      • Just remember the RockChip 3188T runs slower than the RockChip 3188. 1.4GHz compared to 1.6GHz. It makes a noticeable difference.

        • thanks, so do you think this "NEO X7 MINI Rockchip RK3188 Quad Core Cortex A9 Android 4.2.2 1.6GHz Mini TV BOX" must be better option? cheers

        • I would look for one that has good after market support, so check on FreakTab to see if they have ROMs on there. I have been able to flash different ROMs on my one that increase the features or speed it up a bit.

      • Possibly is my best answer :)
When they bring out a half decent android box, they tend to quickly make cheaper versions of them (while keeping the same model number). To be honest, I suspect my version didn't have the T version CPU.

    • There are so many choices and clones out there.

      • I am about to pull the trigger on the one that was posted below by mrfluffy. Looks like its good and mrfluffy seems happy with it.

Again your mileage may vary these Chinese clones etc don't have great QC so you may get a dud one and postage back to get it fixed is quite expensive. I checked for my it was like $20 odd dollars to get it back to China.

  • Also I like to add, being a curious person I cracked open the case and boy on boy… I know what the WiFi didn't work and it was because I swear it was hand soldered or something there were fingerprints on everything in there.

    • If you had dragged the edge of a file on the case while you had it open, you would have been able to move the wifi wire and thingo outside the case and improve the reception, big time. I doubt the fingerprints meant bugger all.

I prefer to not comment on the 'boy on boy ' comment ; )

      • I think the chip is fried… from static electricity hence the finger prints. Android doesn't detect it at all.

Sorry typo in regards to the boy on boy comment LOL. Maybe a mod can edit the "on boy" out.

        • "I think the chip is fried… from static electricity hence the finger prints"

Yeah might be. The wifi on my ug802 was pretty poor until i move the aerial out of the case.
Now it could best be described as 'not too bad'.

If my new one is no better i will be doing a mod like in this vid, which looks very simple and inexpensive. Good luck with yours.

I have been super impressed for the last couple of years with my Ugoos ug802, that plays any video file i try with MX Player. I am smugly impressed with myself for buying it. ; )
So much so, that i am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new quad core and to be able to use the ug802 in the bedroom.

    • That looks like a much better option.

    • That looks like the one that Kogan is selling.

  • rk3288 units are about to come out.. Seems to be a significant boost in performance.. I would probably wait.

  • Excuse my lack of info on this… is this possible that if I buy one of these devices and buy/rent movies on Google Play Store using Telstra Prepaid Main Credit on mobile, I would be able to watch those movies using Play Store on this device on my non-SMART TV?

  • It is now listed at US$19.99 and is out of stock… that would have been a bargain…

  • Bugger, for the price it would of been awesome :( Sold out…
