Olympus OM-D E-M5 Elite and 12-40mm F2.8 Pro Kit - $899 after Olympus Cashback at Gerry Gibbs

440

The lens is one of the best Micro Four Thirds lenses you can buy - and is worth around $1000 on its own so this is an absolute steal.

  • Anyone's order status changed?

I ordered by and paid by BPAY on Thursday (26th) night and my order is still "Sales Order Processing"

    • No change from Sales Order Processing and I don't expect change for a few days yet.

    • Mine says "Picking Slip Printed"

    • I paid by BPAY on Friday morning and my status is:
Picking Slip Printed - Invoice printed today, item shipping mid-late this week

      • cool. I ordered wednesday - paid by credit card though. Mine doesn't say when the item is shipping but lets see.

    • "Hello, Thanks for your order. A pick slip has now been printed and the goods are in the process of being packed ready for shipping or pick-up. "

    • Order Thursday morning. Mine says picking slip printed with the comments - invoice printed delivery mid-late this week.

    • +1

My order status has changed this morning to "Fully Shipped Order".

  • My order status has changed. Picking Slip Printed for the win.

  • Can we please keep this thread alive to get some feedback on camera receipts. Thanks for sharing!

    • I got mine yesterday :)

      • The camera? delivered to the east?

        • +1

          Yep.

      • Received already? Mine hasn't moved from the "Picking Slip Printed" since the weekend…Did you get another update when it was "Shipped"?

        • Mine still say "Picking Slip Printed".
Hopefully they ship soon because we'll need to claim the cashback before July 17th or so!

        • No. Mine was on Picking Slip Printed on Saturday morning and it arrived Tuesday morning in Melbourne CBD! There were no updates but I haven't been on their site to check

        • No, you can claim it anytime according to Olympus rep as long as the full payment was made before 30th June.

        • No, you can't. Its in the T&Cs.

"The Promoter will accept cash back claims received by the Claimant on or before 18th July 2014, provided that the relevant Promotional Products were purchased during the Promotional Period. "

        • @sylon: does it still say picking slip printed? Hoping mines been shipped too!

        • @chir0nex:

Ok, I actually rang them and spoke to someone who said yes you can, I couldn't find the T&Cs myself.

        • +1

@poop: It changed from that to "Fully Shipped Order" but never got an email about it - happened same day i received the package.

      • Mate, just quick question, do they have separate box for lens and the camera? or all in one box? Thanks. :)

        • +1

someone answered this earlier, lens comes in a separate retail box.

  • Can anyone recommend a good-value protective UV filter for the pro lens?

    • B+W is what I use. Value might not be there though.

      • Cheers. I researched a bit more and will probably get the Hoya HMC UV 62mm for around $30.

        • might want to look at marumi..also olympus does one..cant find the price though…

          http://www.mu-43.com/showthread.php?t=54666

          http://www.amazon.com/Marumi-Digital-Grade-Filter-Multi-Coat…

        • @poop:
Just wondering if this Marumi will do: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-Marumi-Super-Digital-DH…

It is a few more bucks than the amazon one but it will probably arrive quicker. I guess there is a difference between them in terms of the UV filtering but the Olympus pro lens should not need that anyway.

        • Not convinced about putting a cheap filter on pro grade optics.
Also not convinced about paying for a pro grade filter just to prevent the occasional fingerprint.
          http://www.dpreview.com/articles/7333331953/should-you-use-a…

          @skatoz:
I dont think there is any real need to filter UV for digital so i wouldn't worry about how well they filter UV, only how good the glass is.

        • @Duff5000:
For peace of mind I would like to get a protective filter. I do not think I will mind the slight degradation of optical quality. The problem is the lack of advice on why is one brand/model better than the other. B+W, Olympus, Hoya, and Marumi seem to all have been recommended.

        • @skatoz:

If you are going to put a filter on the lens then you need to get a good one, cheap ones can cause issues with reflection i.e. reflect off the internal side of the filter.

        • @skatoz: Make sure you get at least a multi-coated one. If its not multi-coated, even from a good brand, then you will get flaring. Noticeable at night with lights.

        • Thanks to everyone who chipped in. I did not want to start a big debate about filters, just asking for specific model recommendations for a good-value UV filter. And if you have some performance data to back it up, even better (something like: http://www.lenstip.com/113.4-article-UV_filters_test_Descrip…
          )

        • @skatoz:
I think I'll go the Olympus once I figure out if the ones from eBay are legit. They ship from Japan for about 55 or so. I just want it for the scratch protection.

    • +1

Research all you want. B+W MRC Nano are the best, period. You will pay a premium for them though, but worth every $.

      • Yes they are IMO though.

  • Mine arrived today!
Only just got the shipping notice (and status change) this morning but they actually shipped yesterday.
    Awesome lens!

And the camera comes in a fancy box, way different to standard E-M5 or E-P5 (dunno about E-M1).

    • where are you based?
      Damnit mine still hasnt shipped:(

    • Did they use aupost?
I might miss the delivery so hopefully it will be forwarded to the post office or depot

    • Melbourne based.

Yours probably shipped, maybe they just haven't updated your profile?
My earlier update said would be shipping "mid-late this week".
      They shipped by startrack express.

      • Sweet I really hope it gets here today!!

      • Any idea what startrack do when you are not home? Not sure if someone will be around next week at their normal delivery times. I thought it would have been here this week which would have been fine.

      • Ahh I ordered mine on 27/06 and still 'Packing Slip Printed'. When did you order yours mate? I am Melbourne-based as well. hopefully it arrives today, exciting!

        • I ordered on the 26th, really hoping it gets here today!

        • +1

          Ordered mine night of 26/06.

You guys will love the camera and lens!

  • +1

Just got an email saying I can track it after 7pm today

    • I got the same one, except it was posted yesterday and it was already delivered!
check the tracking, could be well on its way already.

      • True, mine has arrived today in Adelaide, ordered on 27/06.

        • Hmm I'm in Adelaide too but didn't get mine yet. Ordered on 26/6

    • Same, rather annoyed it hasn't turned up today, wanted to use the lens on the weekend. :(

Edit: tracking says it was only picked up today. Bought on the 26th payment received on the 27th.

      • same here! atleast it was picked up today. any chance they deliver on saturdays?

  • +1

    StarTrack link for the win.
Nice time to catch up on some light reading while waiting :-)

  • Just arrived!

    • +1

      same here :)

      • if you don't mind checking could you tell me is there a serial number on the big outer box? In my excitement I just used the serial from the EM5 box for the claim. If so, is it a different serial to the camera one?

        • +3

No serial on the big outer box. You were correct to use the camera box for your claim!

        • @chir0nex:
Thanks so much for that mate! Can't wait to use this camera..the lens is such a beast..best quality feeling lens I've ever owned! Thanks again OP for posting!

      • +1

        same here! :)

  • Received mine. Fantastic lens. Stuck the lens on my Panasonic. Haven't even opened the 'free' camera.

I have an invoice date of 30th June (some days after I paid). Olympus site asks for invoice date but doesn't let me select 30th June in the drop-down. I guess I'll just put the "Order date" showing on the invoice, which is showing the 28th, which is still one day after I paid, from memory. http://www.olympus.com.au/Learn-Explore/Promotions/Olympus-M…

    Cash-back ahoy.

    • Yeah I did the same, put the order date in.
Can't wait to try it..battery all charged up just gotta get home from work!
Was reading up about the EM-1…if the em-5 deal wasn't so damn good I would have gone the em-1 I think.

      • if the em-5 deal wasn't so damn good I would have gone the em-1 I think.

I have some Four Thirds lenses that would love to be resurrected on a new body. The EM-1 would be perfect. Was contemplating it but can't justify the expense. I'd sooner get the GH3 I think.

PS. I got stuck on the Date Of Birth format on Olympus' cashback page. Should be in DD/MM/YYYY format with the forward slashes included. Olympus offer no helpful hints. Also, as mentioned above, use the camera box for the serial number (not the lens serial number or anything else). Mine started with the BFH prefix followed by 6 numbers. Olympus don't make it clear which serial to use if you buy a kit. Hopefully that helps someone.

        • I left the DoB blank.

        • Probably a smart move. I should have done that…

    • I am thinking of keeping the em-5 body, as i currently have a panasonic g5 aswell, but i now have 2 olympus lenses now, which dont have I.S., this lense and also 45mm f1.8, so i thought it would be better to use them on the olympus as the em-5 has inbuilt I.S. i dont have a steady hand at the best of times ..

    • Although 30 June was disabled in the date picker, I just typed it in manually.

  • What did you guys put in for purchase price? $1099?

    • I just put in the full amount on my invoice. I guess it doesn't really matter as the cash back is not based on the price.

      • I just put the price I paid. I'm sure they'll look at the invoice anyway.
Man, so many boxes within the box. Boxception. Love the piano black!

Now for the impatient 3 hour battery charge..

This also arrived at the same time as my 32GB Sandisk SD card from Shopping Express during that epic sale, ha

        • Yeah the packaging is pretty epic! I charged at work :D

    • What did you guys put in for purchase price? $1099?

      Yep.
I thought the invoice could have been clearer in that regard.

  • Just wondering, when you first turn on the camera, is there a initial setup process where you set the date, time and language, also is the super control panel already activated? Lastly is the body firmware at version 2.0?

    • From memory it asks you the date. Scp is on but not in the ideal setup. I posted a link on page one with some good setup changes from dpreview. I found it much better with the changes.

  • Anyone else getting the squeeking noise when they zoom in or out with the lens and the camera on? Doesn't make any noise when the camera is off and from Google seems like its been reported before, but just wondering if everyone's does this.
    Thanks!

    • Iirc that is due to being weather sealed. I think it is normal (my one is waiting at the post office so I haven't tried)

      • Would be great if you could try it out and let me know duff..thanks!
Also I feel like its coming from the camera rather than the lens as it only does it when the camera is on.

        • I just tried it, it makes kinda a dull grinding noise like a typical zoom lens (slightly louder when the camera is on), nothing out of the ordinary.

        • @JetLi: I would say its substantially louder..basically non existant when off then as soon as I put it on its like a totally new sound.
Just tried it again…its almost like a creaking sound..the slower you go the more apparent the creaking is..if you do it faster it's like a squeeking.

        • @poop: ok, i did it numerous times at moderate speed and did not notice anything to this degree, interested to see if others have experienced such squeaking.

        • @JetLi: hmm that's concerning..the camera definitely has to be switched on for it to happen..when it's off it sounds silent. Interesting to see if anyone else has this.
          Thanks for trying!

    • Mine has the same. Looks to be normal for this lens - pretty sure its to do with the lens needing to re-focus to maintain a constant aperture while zooming.

      • Phew thanks for that!realised its only really noticeable in a silent room so not really an issue as long as that's how they're made. Thanks a lot for checking.

      • Found out what it is:

"Parfocal" zooming, aka keep focus while zooming

Both my 12-50 and 12-40 try too keep the focal plane constant while you zoom in and out, both succeed better with slower zooming compared to faster zooming. With both the constant refocusing during zooming is quite audible, even more so when you hold the camera to your eye. Zoom while the camera is turned off to hear how considerable the difference can be, especially with the larger and maybe more resonating 12-40.

  • If you are looking to buy a polarizing filter for this lens, read this:
    http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3644367
Looks like the B+W filter doesn't fit. May go for the Marumi DHG super.
    Thanks for posting. Amazing camera!

  • Received both the camera and the lens today…. Looks like a beautiful kit…

I was planning to sell my Sony Nex 6, however due to a change in circumstance, will be selling both the Camera and Lens. Happy to separate for someone that only wants the lens.
