Using a third party ROM? Might want to check for Trojans

If you recall some weeks ago I posted about Chinese phones coming preinstalled with malware.

However this also applies to 3rd party ROMs. In particular, I was using a Mokee KitKat rom on my LG Optimus 4X and found that the sideloaded Mokee Market APK is in fact the well known Uupay.D Trojan. The APK couldn't be removed via Titanium Backup, but I was able to delete the APK file using Root Explorer. It may be possible to do this through ADB commands as well.

I hence do not recommend using the Mokee ROMS as they seem to be laced with Uupay.D.

I recommend using MalwareBytes for Android to scan and check your phones if you are using a rooted and ROM'ed device, and to avoid using untrustworthy modded ROMS that originate from chinese developers.

thanks. i will stick with CM

  • Best Trojan checker?

I am running a $250USD phone preloaded with more then a few undeletable Chinese Apps. Pretty sure they are not good; just not sure how bad. Been using for a few months with no dramas so far…

Not sure which is the best, Android anti-malware is a recent development, you could probably run two or three and see which ones detect the most. As I recall, MalwareBytes is using their forum and relying on crowdsourcing to report trojans.

However, none of the anti malware apps will help you delete them because they don't have root access and cannot delete a system app.

To remove them you could either use Root Explorer or Root App Delete. Backup your phone before doing any deleting though.

  • Thanks for the heads up (well sort of) I'm using Mokee on the exact same phone as you and I can't find a Mokee Market app, maybe it's all good now?

  • Crap, I'm new to the root and custom rom thing, actually just did it last night… Is CM11 trustworthy? I have the latest CM11 nightly on my old GS3 4G.

After rooting it, I have no idea what I can do with it, I only did it because I wanted to try it out on an old phone.

    • yes CM is the most trustworthy ROM. I've been using it for years. What's it do? Just has a few more options/features than stock. It's what stock should be but isn't!
