  • Woot! Been waiting for the TR reboot to be on the cheap again… need another game to push the video card a bit.

  • I loved Tomb Raider. It's one of my top 10 games of its generation I think. Its combat was fun, though a bit on the easier side but not so easy that I never died.

Its graphics were gorgeous. Perhaps lacking in colour but so good on PC. Yes Definitive Edition is supposed to be better, but I don't like what they did to her face. Her face in the PC version looks more cute and innocent.

My only problem is that gameplay is at odds with story. She is presented as someone who's never seen combat before, even reluctant to take an animal's life. She was a victim of sexual assault after crash landing on the island. She's in shock after killing her first human. But not long later, becomes a badass killer with a body count of 433 (compared to 5 in the original Tomb Raider). It's a bit hard to suspend disbelief there.

I would personally not have bothered with the inexperienced, vulnerable, reluctant to kill beginnings and just started her out with experience killing. You can't really do an origin story in a shooter if the gameplay is going to be such that the player's personal skill contradicts the story.

    • agreed.. there was some other FPS I was playing recently where near the end you walked into a room and it's full of bodies and the cut scene was one where it was supposed to be that the player character was shocked, but by that stage I'd already murdered hundreds of game goons and was busy searching the bodies for bullets etc. for the inevitable showdown due at the end of the game.

I'm not against killing in games, however it is a narrative and game design cop out.

  • Should be marked as expired, it looks like the Hitman franchise has replaced this deal.
