This is still only a single speaker mono digital radio with FM.

Is there no line out/headphone jack either?

Ha. No pre-amp either. You'd think an alarm clock would have better specs that that.

  • I think this is the best price it's been (I see references to $89 in the past) and perhaps the ability to stack old coupons on that.

  • Does this have battery backup ?

    • Checked the reviews (which are all positive) and the tech specs at Philips and the answer is no.

    • Not sure about this radio hut most dab chipset is able to receive time over the air, save stations in eeprom or flash memory. So battery is not required.

Not required for DAB clock radio - that's the beauty of it and the reason why got it (not this particular one) years ago.
With DAB, clock automatically syncs to your local time zone. It also changes by itself for Daylight Saving start/end. Once you program alarm, it stores settings (as well as station presets) in case of power loss. Once power is back, it will auto adjust clock and Alarm will go off at the set time :)

P.S. As I said, I have different model MagicBox, but this one looks better thanks to bigger display. Not sure how good sound is (MagicBox is pretty good for it's size), but that's not the main reason for having these. They are great to reliably wake you up and to hear the morning news and weather. Mine has two alarms, can specify days (so don't have to turn it off on weekends) and automatically turns itself off after an hour (set to wake me up by playing radio - but can be set to alarm sound or iPod music).

    • DAB doesnt need battery backup - the clock can be set from the digital signal as soon as the power comes back on.

I have one of these units and have been impressed - taking into consideration it is a clock radio and not a high quality 5.1 sound system. Sound is clear. Display dims itself at night so it is not too bright whilst you are sleeping. Radio alarm comes on at a low level and builds up. Buttons are a little flimsy though.

Wouldnt pay $129 for it. Under $80 is OK

      • isnt battery back for when the power goes out, the alarm still sounds when you need it to, rather than store settings.

        • Yes that's why the 2 I have in the bedroom (His'n'Hers) are hooked up to a little UPS :)

      • Not sure about the claim that batteries are not required for an alarm clock.

If the power if off when you are required to get up then without batteries, you're stuffed.

        • The battery backup in an old school Clock Radio didn't set off the alarm if the power was out, it just retained the time on the clock.
Hence the comments about it being unnecessary.

      • That's good to know as I have a sangean clock radio and every time the power goes off I have to program back in the time , station and alarms

  • aww too bad no white one

  • I got one of these 12 months ago and its the bee's knees. As stated above auto setting of time and date not to mention the better selection of stations via digital radio. The thing auto dim's so its not to bright at night and the alarm is uber programmable with able to set different alarms for different days. Its been a huge hit in my house

  • Can anyone tell me if it has a nice big snooze button on top? And also if its easy to toggle between setting alarm on and off. This sounds strange but on my current Philips clock radio one extreme of the on/off switch is on and the other is radio, with off in the middle! Drives me crazy as its a fiddly little button.

    • Yes, there is a single button on top with a dim light around it for alarm on & off functions only. Pretty sure it has a big snooze button also, never use that feature and only have set it up once. I just set the radio for 30 mins as alarm, never need to touch it as it just turns itself off after 30 mins.

I was looking for a clock for my bedroom a while back. Ended up getting a cheap tablet (that Acer MemoPad from HN/TGG) and using a clock app which also displays the weather. I also have a floating video feed from one of my external CCTV cameras so I can have a quick glance if I hear anything at night.

You can also use a streaming radio station as an alarm if desired.

    • that sounds grouse. good idea for the cctv

  • I'd be weary with blue light clocks, they're really bright compared to red or even green lights. They are even worse when you get insomnia.

    • It dims itself though when it is dark.

      • Just put red cellophane over the front =)

  • probably OT, anyone know an alarm clock that can sync and display weather forecasts etc?

    • Chumby?
or the old phone/tablet solution mentioned by @eug above

  • I’ve considered those options, but would prefer a dedicated solution because I prefer to hit tactile buttons to disable the alarm, have old school LED illumination, analogue radio, etc. Unfortunately that’s probably too much old and new tech mashed up that will probably never make it on the market lol. Chumby doesn't look bad at all.

    • You can get iPhone dock clock radios..
Probably the closest you'll get, but no good if you don't own an iOS device.

Dock for your phone if you're non-iOS plus old school (or the above) clock radio is the next best option.
