Find me a bargain on watches

Hey guys. Can you help me finding a bargain on watches? The watch would be a b'day present. I would like something with a nice brand but not very expensive.

This is what I have in mind (using the free shipping code)

but I am wondering if I can find better deals. :P

Thank you :)

Hugo Boss branded watch is a fashion watch, you can get better value in other brands such as Seiko and Citizen, they have quite a range from affordable to expensive.

Time Paradise stocks and advertises them here on Ozbargain. Have a look, they have 8% off at the moment.

Otherwise Jomashopis also a good option, affordable grey imports. However shipping is quite steep.

I would definitely agree with you about Hugo Boss being a fashion watch, but most people know about zero about watches and would think a Hugo Boss was superior to a Seiko or Citizen.

I don't want the OP going into a birthday gift situation having to explain how Seiko really was a nice watch with a good movement.

  • You need to go to the watchwatch.com.au website.

    Just kidding.

  • Heads up on watches. If you don't buy a mechanical watch (decent ones start in the multi thousands of dollars), then you are literally paying for the way it looks. There is no inherent value in a quartz watch, the movement might be worth $20 at best. So whether you pay $30 for a kmart special or $900 for a Tag Heuer F1, you are still essentially getting the same watch, but paying for fashion. They tell the time in the same way, (usually they are actually more accurate than a $3000 mechanical watch), but I don't see the value at all in a 'nice' quartz watch. Get yourself something cheap that suits you, or something interesting and innovative like a smart watch. No point in wasting good money on anything more expensive unless you are willing to step up to a mechanical.

    • Mechanical watch snobbery on the grounds of value for money is beyond ludicrous, especially here on Ozbargain.

The reality is that mechanical watch movements are basically generic products from a limited number of OEMs, with the well-advertised/promoted brand names adding value by applying their distinctive custom features to produce the finished products. If you buy an expensive mechanical watch, you are literally paying for the way it looks!

      • Considering the point of a watch is to look at a time.
So looks should definitely be factored in.

In a sense since you stare at the brand, perhaps the more prestige associated with the brand would give the owner a perception of self-worth.

I stumbled upon this article, which states a Seiko 5 is the 'cheapest high end watch' based on the following criteria:

    • Mechanical Watch
    • Manufacture movement
    • Reputable brand where there is continued involvement of the founders
    • Vintage
    • Steel case
    • Under 40mm in diameter

So quite possibly something like this:

However, at the end of the day this selection is solely a writer's opinion. I'd suggest that you try and factor in the bday-er's preferences (colours etc.) if not your own personal preference.

I've just found another site which perhaps may offer more choice:

    Good luck!

  • Thank you everyone. I really appreciate your comments. I have learned a lot.

Unfortunately ebay doesn't seem a very good option anymore. "CSHIP4FREE" has just expired. :(
