LG G2 or Moto X

Hi Guys,

I am looking at a new mobile and was wondering if some of the gurus can point me in the right direction.

I had a look at JB HIFI and liked the LG G2 & Moto X. Both look nice phones with the LG being about $50 dear. Any pros and cons for eah model or is there another phone I should be looking at. Budget approx $400

Thanks

  • What about the Nexus 5? I had to choose between that and the LG G2 last year. Went with the Nexus as it would have good updates.

Between Nexus and the Moto X - I really can't think of any reason why the Moto X would be better.

If there is no decisive factor between the 3 (eg. fast updates for Nexus, although Moto X has been good so far) - I'd say that the Nexus 5 will be the best phone for resell or continued use 1-2yrs from now. Go with that.

If between LG G2 and Moto X (ie. no way Nexus) - decide based on where you like or volume buttons…however I think most people would prefer the Moto X over the LG G2 (huge generalisation)

Nexus > Moto > LG (although all very close). Think 1-2yrs from now (resell or continued use)

G2 has awesome Optically Stabilised Camera and brilliant battery but the software is a bit of a letdown.
MotoX has some awesome features like the always on "OK Google" and special notifications capability of the screen..
If you're going to utilise the unique Moto X Features then that's the winner, but for most people I'd say the G2 is the better all-rounder.
If you don't like the G2 software, it's essentially a specced up Nexus 5 (or the Nexus 5 is a specced down version of the G2), so you can install custom ROM's that make it Nexus-like fairly easily.

  • id go for the LG G2 over the Nexus 5, mainly for the improved battery life. otherwise they are really the same phone.

Agree with this. LG G2 battery life is amazing. 3000mah!!!

LG G2 all the way!!. Has Great battery life and it only takes around 2hrs to do a full charge. Bezeless display, volume and power buttons are at the back so you won't accidentally press them. Has knock-code, infra red remote. Easy to root and install custom ROM's. I regret selling mine :(.

  • If bluetooth in your car is important, seek feedback from others.

I have the Moto X running 4.4.4 and it's terrible for voice dialling, navigation instructions, etc compared to the Razr-V. Lots of other users saying much the same thing. It tends to rely on a data connection and I don't leave data on.

MotoX has Moto Assist but be prepared to give control and information before it can be of use. The old Razr would activate drive mode when it detected a bluetooth device, Moto X wants to turn on GPS, mobile data and wifi (?) to help detect movement AND gather your location. WTF!

Other than those points, it's been a fast reliable phone with good battery life. One of my mates has the G2 and swears he should have got the Moto X after he spent some time with it. I wasn't a fan of his G2… shape, audio on phone calls seemed worse and data not as fast as the X. But they were our uncontrolled tests.

    • Have you downloaded offline voice recognition libraries?

      • Yes I have and all apps are up to date.

  • Yeah the LG G2 is much better than the Nexus 5 (and this is coming from a Nexus 4 / AOSP fanboy)

Much better battery (seriously a huge upgrade over the Nexus 5)
    Much better Camera
    Better screen

The Nexus 5 does get updates quicker but if you're happy to root and install an alternate firmware the LG G2 can run the G3 Rom (CloudyG3). I've been running it on my wife's G2 from day one without any issues.

    LG G2 all the way.

    1. Better camera.
    2. Better screen.
    3. LG's committed to get Android L on this. Also it will have G3's interface very soon (officially, according to Android Authority).

    4. …and if you don't like the software, you can always get a custom rom: https://amigotips.wordpress.com/2014/07/02/your-phone-faster…

To those who are recommending the Nexus 5… Seriously, no. The battery life of the G2 simply blows the N5's mediocre-to-sad battery life. Moreover, the G2's battery life is considered on par with tablets. Yep, tablets, not phones.

Also, a bonus: You can get the G2 to 'learn' remote controls. You can get the G2 to become a garage door opener!

  • LG G Pro 2??? Same price, better phone comes with Micro SD slot

    • Good proposition.

Note: G Pro 2 is similar in size to a Galaxy Note 3… i.e. is like a phablet.

      …while a G2 is very similar in size to a Galaxy S4 and Nexus 4, i.e. smaller than the G Pro 2.
