Recommendations for an Electric BBQ

Hi Guys,

looking to get a BBQ for dad for fathers day, and was looking at these 3 models in particular:

Sheffield electric BBQ (no model as such, but looks similar to the others)
Sunbeam Kettle BBQ - HG5400
George Foreman GGR201RAU

Im mainly looking at getting an electric one which he could use indoor as well (he's not much of an outdoor/camping kind of guy).

Im rewally interested in the detachable feature of the Sheffield one (you can use the grill on a table top or supplied stand if you want to take it outdoors) so he has to choice of taking it outside if he wants to, whereas the other 2 are pretty much fixed on the stand.

Only issue is I'm not too sure about the Sheffield brand as only a few online retailers stock them (like OO and Deals Direct) and theres no dedicated website to get more info, but the Sunbeam and George Foreman ones have their own websites and are stocked at places like HN.

Im looking at spending around the $120-150 mark, and is mainly for personal use (not for large parties etc.). Any ideas on the Sheffield brand? Or any similar models/brands are welcome.

Thanks in advance

Update - Thanks for all your help guys. I'm probably going to get him a gas one (a smaller one) and work on convincing him to use it :) Thanks again for your input

  • I had the Sunbeam and it was pretty useless.
They're essentially just an electric frying pan on an operpriced stand… better to just buy an electric frying pan and a table in my opinion.
The electric frypan will do just as good a job (if not better) at cooking and the table can be used of other things.

any recommendations from your experience? a link or model perhaps?

Edit: Sorry, I should have added that it would be preferably to drain away the grease stuff as he's quite health conscious

      • drain away the grease stuff

That's the problem with these things though.. the heat isn't high enough to cook properly unless you cook on the flat right over the element.
It would take me 45 minutes with the lid on (to keep the heat up) to cook a few snags. if you cook on the Grill side, the heat transfer is so poor it'd take hours!

How about just getting a hotplate for the stovetop (assuming he has a gas stovetop)?

  • Everyone I know who has bought an electric BBQ has regretted it - a gas one is so much better.

    • Unfortunately that's not much of an option for me (personally I would prefer owning a gas one) but knowing my dad, he'll probably end up never using it if I get him a gas one

  • I'm gonna have to agree. Everyone i know has ditched theirs too, they become an inconvenience. If you have an outdoor space which is protected from the elements, and power point nearby it might be a good idea. Other than that they don't get hot enough to put a nice sear on a juicy steak or will loose heat when the meat gets slapped on. But that's just personal opinion. If I'm BBQ'n its either charcoal or nothing. Charcoal burns a lot hotter and theirs less moisture in the heat.

Have a look on the masters website. They have a few offerings which will fit your budget. Give the guy some fire to play with, I think he's reach the age where he can act responsibility :). A charcoal BBQ and chimney starter that should fit your budget.

or similar will work a treat. You should be able to find a model which has a drainage hole for the oil, just make sure the actual grill pan is cast iron or stainless steel or the induction cooker won't work.

We use the gas camping stove with this or a pot for table bbq or steamboat but since your Dad won't do gas then induction might be the way to go :)

  • Whether it's electric or gas, who bbq's indoors??. Eg an enclosed space.
