Laptop Keyboard & Mouse Not Working At All (Even for BIOS)

Hello,

I appreciate any help :)

Problem:

  • Laptop Keyboard & Mouse Not Working At All
  • I cannot even enter Safe Mode or the BIOS (since the keys do not register)

Happened today after no significant changes except:
* Installed pro paid version of Avast & restarted the computer
* Have been travelling overseas lately and some of the screws had shaken loose - I tightened about 3 screws - still no fix

Other Notes:
* The computer boots to the Windows Login
* My external USB Mouse DOES work
* My external USB Keyboard DOES NOT work
* The Laptop Keyboard & Mouse DO NOT work

Tried Solutions:

  • Several Restarts and Shut downs
  • Removed Battery & AC Adapter (vice versa)
  • Opened the back up to have a visual inspection (didn't see much)
  • Un-mounted the Keyboard and checked the ribbon connections - were all good

Thanks so much to anyone for any further suggestions
Have a great day/evening :)

    What laptop model is this?

Sounds like some sort of major motherboard issue. Do other USB devices work? For example, if you plugged in a portable HDD, can Windows recognize and mount the drive (HDD inserted notification) and does the drive spin up?

  • Metabox 650SR

    My USB mouse works.

Can't login to win anymore tho cause USB keyboards don't work.

The light on the USB keyboards illuminate, but don't work

    Thank you

If on Windows 7 or 8, you may be able to login via mouse by using On Screen Keyboard.

Once you are into Windows, go into the Device Manager and check that your hardware is working. Look for items with an exclamation mark as it could point to a component with driver problems.

Also try uninstalling Avast or perhaps even 'refresh' your Windows 8 installation to see if it fixes the issue.

omfg man you are a damn genius.

i used the onscreen keyboard to login, played around with the broken drivers.

Then I could get into BIOS now for some reason but not windows.

Then uninstalled Avast and it's all fixed now.

Thank you very much scrimshaw. That onscreen keyboard idea allowed me to troubleshoot it as much as i had liked.

I want to buy you a beer or whatever beverage you desire. I'll pm you about your paypal address!!!

you've just saved me a whole week or two of being without this laptop. Which is really critical to my success right now. Thanks a lot.

        • Glad to be of service :) and thanks for the generous tip

You may want to contact avast customer support and tell them about what happened. http://www.avast.com/en-au/support

The Avast software must have installed some keyboard monitoring or filtering driver which conflicted with perhaps your computer's firmware/hardware and made the keyboard unusable. This is why you should go with simpler protection, the extra stuff that gets installed by Internet security suites just bog your computer down and can cause issues when they don't get installed or uninstalled properly.
