[eBay] Western Digital Red 4TB NAS Drives $182.58 (+Cash Rewards 2% Cash Back) @ EB King

160
CELEBRATE15

EDIT: EB King has sold out for the time being but there's some other sellers with the same price in the description below
So I was looking at Seagate NAS 4TB drives and doing the math, and it turns out it's probably just a bit more expensive than the Amazon deal recently (which were limited to 2 per person) I snapped up another few to populate my 6 drive NAS, but then it occurred to me that WD Reds are persistently pricier on Amazon than the Seagates and similar in price in Australia and lo and behold, they're $182.58! Don't forget the cash back bonus.
The free market seems to be working well as several other shops have lowered their prices to 214.50 pre discount:
ShallotHead
FutuOnline
Coolxillia is probably the cheapest if you're buying more than one but he's only got 5 left. Act quick!
The Seagates are here (Shopping Express), but leave one for me! Was going to leave a transaction open in case I decided I want to buy something later tonight. They're also slightly pricier and use more power. They're faster and have slightly faster seek times because of that though.

Question: What's the deal with the "NAS" Class drives? I.e. can these just be used as a normal internal harddrive?
All I know is green = eco = slower = cheaper

    • +4

Yes. There is nothing stopping you putting a desktop drive in a NAS and there's nothing stopping you putting a NAS drive in a desktop as a storage drive or OS drive.
These are designed/marketed to be used 24x7 in a NAS situation. Supposedly more reliable than desktop consumer drives (but they're still consumer grade and not like WD RE drives or Seagate constellation drives which are Enterprise drives and ~x2 the price, give or take) but who knows. The lack of large studies of drive failures by large storage enterprises (I'm looking at you Google, ok so you have done the odd release here and there) leads us to assume failure rates based on hearsay (my friend had one die on him, I'm never buying insert brand here again!)
      Generally speaking NAS drives are:
      Slow RPM
      - Which leads to low power consumption
Possible benefits of decreased failure rate
Possibly optimised firmware to be on all the time

In reality, there's some objective measurements that they're better in a NAS, but longevity is still questionable.
Yet I populate my NAS with NAS drives cos I buy into marketing. That and I'm paranoid and like my placebos thank you very much.

    • and there is something called warranty. it is 3 years on the red drive

      • And blues have 2-3 years (depending on retail vs OEM) and blacks have 5 years. The 3 year warranty on the Reds is certainly not outstanding.

      reds have;
      - longer warranty
      - error recovery
      - longer time before heads park themselves

    • imo there is generally not that much difference between the various wd lines other than rpm and warranty. i think the head parking issue is the primary cause of hdd dying early and these paramaters you can change with tools that wd provide themselves. ie. download wdidle3 off wd and permanently disable or reduce head parking frequency.

i/o rates will be negligable if you are going to using them in multi-raid setups.

  • I've been looking at the WD Red 6TBs today.
Sub $300AU delivered makes it a pretty attractive deal.

    • Not AU stock though. You're looking at ~$389 before discounts from AU.

    • I've heard WD have apparently crammed 6 platters into those drives as they apparently haven't managed to break the 1TB/platter barrier yet aside without using their new shingled magnetic recording technology (which hasn't made it to the Red group anyway).
Well people gasped in horror when they put 4 platters into a HDD and proclaimed that it they were all going to burn in fiery hell (hint, they didn't). This could be just fear-mongering.
You can use the coupon on non-AUD transactions, just one currency per transaction (and use of the coupon)
You'd also be just over the $666.67 mark with 2 drives. But yeah otherwise the 6TB's a good deal. 6 drives if you use all 3 coupons on them.

      • I thought I had read somewhere that they had 5 platters with 1.2TB/platter. I have two, compared to my 4TB reds they can be a little louder, I'm not sure why, but they have been going strong.
Edit: Here is an article talking about the platter size

        • I'm only running one so far, and I can't tell much of a difference in normal use. The 6TB is definitely a lot louder when running a SMART test, though. Particularly the Quick Test makes my NAS extremely audible even across a large room.

        • Sorry, I must have gotten Seagate and WD mixed up in my head.

  • The NAS drives are designed to be always on and are supposed to be more reliable

  • Bought this morning from futu_online as they were the cheapest..

seems like price has been dropped to few cents difference by ebking to get on top!

  • I made an offer on these of $420 for 2 and it was accepted. To match ITESTATE'S current price.

  • Is this deal expired? It shows $217.30 for me.

  • Thanks. Hadn't thought about HDDs. Used my second transaction to pick up a 4TB seagate NAS (to match my other drives) for cheaper than umart prices.

  • I bought the WD Red 6TB this morning from EB King for $379. Actually auto-accepted (or simply instantly accepted) the offer. Only drawback is that you can't merge it with other items in your cart and you have to use one transaction just for the drive. $322.15 is a pretty good deal though, even a few bucks cheaper than the same drive I bought from Amazon a while back (am slowly moving from 3TB to 6TB, spreading out when and where I get the drives).

As for the Red drives, I guess the simplest description is that it is essentially a green drive with different firmware, specific for use in a NAS, and a longer warranty period. That's what you pay the premium for. IMO, there's no point paying premium for a non-redundant setup.

    • Forgot to include the $7.58 cashback. Comes down to $314.57. Excellent price for AU stock.

  • +1

i bought this drive the other day and is a lot quiter than my old black

  • The "make an offer" accepts $210 for single drives too. I didn't use the 2% cash reward so my total was $178.50… Then ended up ordering a second.

    • Anyone able to successfully offer lower than $210 for one?

      • Anything below $210 is below our cost. Sorry mate.

        • Bah, I forgot to use the cashrewards website to nab the extra 2% off :(
Rookie error on my behalf :|

    • Update:
Sold out of 4TB's again on the 16/09/2014. More should be arriving before the sale ends. Sorry!

      • Update #2: Plenty back in stock!

  • Is there a way I can make an offer and add other items to cart. There are some other things I want to purchase at the same time

    • Not that I'm aware of. There was no way I could see to add what was in my cart when going through paying for the accepted offer.

      • I was able to. Just dont pay yet and then add other items to cart then pay all at once

        • Hmm, thanks, I need to check that next time.

  • Always bet on black. IMO.

BTW, They are just about to put out a 10GB mother!

  • Both of mine arrived… Pretty poor packaging for something as fragile as a hard drive.
