Samsung 16GB Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 10.1" Wi-Fi Tablet $464 @ Dick Smith

360
SHOP75

Tablet has been on special at DSE for a while at 10% off which ends on 29th Sept, but this weekend there is an additional $75 off items $500-$999. Code works on other items of course, but added to the 10% makes this tablet cheaper than anything I've seen for AU stock, including the recent 15% Ebay deal.

Delivery is free, or click and collect.

FWIW I am loving the S-pen.

BTW, Kit Kat OTA for P600 was released to AU yesterday, mine updated fine.

Any problems with the MicroSD access? 4.4.2 changed a few things and I'm not sure if I should upgrade or not.

Fantastic deal on the tablet though, the screen is amazing.

Hmm, yeah 4.4 is not allowing apps to write to SDcard.

There are of course solutions but they require root. This is not specific to Samsung devices but is Google's 'fault'. Not sure I can accept it's a security thing since they also don't allow you by default to block certain permissions like apps deciding they'd like to send a SMS whenever they feel like it, even when it's not required as such.

edit: ok, played with 4.4.2 and SDcard a bit more, not sure it's a huge issue, apps can now only write to their own area on the SDcard. This can be less than obvious where that is, for example I use Airdroid for moving files from my network to the Note, I have to upload them to /storage/extSdCard/Android/data/com.sand.airdroid/files/

I can use the inbuilt Samsung App 'My Files' to move things anywhere I like afterwards, but it's a clunky app to say the least. I'll probably root the device at some point anyway but not till I'm sire it's got no faults as that voids warranty.

        • Thanks for trying it out, I mainly use the MicroSD for media files and it seems like that's fine. Only apps can't be installed there which is limiting on 16GB but fine for my uses.

I'm holding off on root too, only 10 months in on the 24 month warranty.

        • Yep kitkat is a t**d on a stick. I have the older Tab 3 on Jellybean and am sticking with it for now.

The SD card lockout is nothing short of an extension of the "root it and you void warranty scam".

"Oh you want to use advanced utilities on your device without jumping through hoops. I'm sorry sir it's for your own security. Never mind that we could have introduced controls so you could choose which apps access the SD card - that's too complicated for dummies….I mean end users like you who just want to get on with things. You really want those utilities? Well you COULD root your device but we can't recommend it. It voids the warranty you know."

"Oh you've found a warranty problem with your tablet? No problem drop it in and we'll fix it for you. Uh-ho looks like you've rooted your device. Sorry but we're going to have to charge for the repair. It doesn't matter that the fault is unrelated to rooting - we can't spend the time or money testing to make sure that's the case for a handful of people who've gone against advice and rooted now can we. Oh it's not worth double the price to fix? That's okay we can return it to you as soon as you've paid the $100 inspection fee, and return shipping. Will that be card or paypal?"

Not to mention that if Google had any real interest in security, they wouldn't be storing people's WIFI passwords in their google account by default:

or in plain text on the phone:

          Yeah security my left foot!

    • How are the speakers?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-10-1-16GB… wont this be $432 tomorrow after 20% discount?

    • Not if the the Good Guys jack up the price before tomorrow 20% off sale.
Check out people's reply and noticing they're jacking up the price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/162714

      • Looks like you're right, Goodguys price on Ebay is still $539 today, so 20% off that is a better deal.

  • I have the 4G 32GB version of this tablet, and it is excellent. The s-pen makes the difference. Craps all over the previous Note 10.1 tablet.

  • I have this same tablet and although I'm otherwise happy with it, the back cover gets uncomfortably warm with extended use.

  • are android tablets any good in terms of tablet only apps compared to ipad?

    • Nahh most of apps use phone apps on tablet. It not a seperate platform at all like the Ipad version to Iphone version. If you can stand unoptimize experience then this tablet would suit you fine. I have one but kinda regret the purchase. I should have gotten a Window tablet for more money.

but window tablet not as much apps..

I myself have an ipad….but also considering an android tablet as well

are the phone apps on tablet look like how they do it on ipad?
ie 1x mode and you can zoom in mode

        • +1

Apps initially designed for phones will auto-zoom on tablets, and will adjust itself to the resolution of the bigger screen.

        • @Captain Irrelevant:

low basically low quality looking apps like the ipad 1x mode…or 2x mode..

    • +1

Play store has recently added tablet section !

In general, most apps work very well with added tablet support (ratio etc)

      • spare parts plus normally could adjust for you

  • Just tried TGG sale, pay by Paypal only but drops the price to $444 including postage.

  • How does this compare with the Note Pro?

    • Worse…
The Tab4 is basically low to low mid specced. I would go as far as to say its trash but that's a tad too mean.
