Eveready 6V Dolphin Torch $15.75 - Supercheap Auto

60

Got an email from Supercheap - These are $15.75 each down from the regular price of $25.99. Bunnings selling for $23.90. Masters $23.95.

It's been years since I've used a dolphin torch - hopefully they are still the same quality.

    Odd, I think this

    Is different to
    http://www.bunnings.com.au/eveready-6v-waterproof-led-dolphi…

    75lumens vs 100lumens? weird!

Wait! Figured it one, one must be regular bulb & the other is LED,

Super cheap Auto have the LED version on special for today only http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Evere…
    $15.75

Neither are all that great. 100 lumens is pretty dim.

I got a 280 Lumen maglite clone (3*D) from Aldi for $15 a few months ago.

Also 6V batteries can be pretty expensive.

      • True! but it would be handy for fishing, especially if the torch fell into the water :)

I have a LED Lenser P7 that has 320Lm, runs on 4x AAA and is great, but each torch has there purposes

If you go to Bunnings they should give you 10% off the SCA price. As they state "If you see a cheaper price we'll beat it by 10%".

    • Yes, they changed bulb some time ago. The difference is very noticeable.

  • +2

As Gomo has pointed out they are different products.

The SCA at $15.75 is LED, the one at bunnings for $13.98 is xenon bulb.
That is why they are different lumens and price.

  • They are. My bad.. can't change the deal back to supercheap (still seems to be a good price).

    • +1

I'd recommend linking to the SCA deal in the top post, just so people see it, seems a few good SCA deals around lately with the free membership that everyone got these are good deals for people to be using there $10 instore credit on :)

      • Their $10 in store credit.

        • Won't letme fix it up lol

  • Xenon is much better

  • I have two older ones. Cant remember the last time I used them. I mostly use on a head mount torch that is well sealed. While I haven't tested it in water I am sure it would survive a dunk. It cost around $20 and takes a couple of AAAs which are cheap enough. Works well on rechargeables as well.

  • How many hours do the 6V batteries last?

    • +1

      Xenon:
8 hours runtime, using Eveready Super Heavy Duty 6V Battery 1209

      LED Lantern (this deal):
47.5 hours runtime (6x longer than MK6 Xenon), using Eveready Super Heavy Duty 6V Battery 1209

  • FWIW, an easy mod for these is to solder on a couple of wires with spade connectors to the terminals so that you can use rechargeable 6v SLA batteries! :)

    • +1

Actually, no need for a mod. I am a bit surprised that they're still available, but you can buy proper 6 volt SLA lantern batteries from Jaycar.

My uncle used to go through lots of lantern batteries using his Dolphin torch, so when I discovered that direct lead-acid replacements existed, I bought him one as a gift + a charger to suit.

We were both shocked by the weight of the torch when the battery was installed (the torch basically feels like you're carrying a freaking housebrick with a handle), but he WAS thrilled by the savings on throwaway batteries!

      • Cool, I haven't seen those before…that's fancy livin' :)

        • Yup, as long as you fancy the very considerable prospect of a broken toe at some point, VERY fancy!

We have a few of these type of touches around the house. To be honest, I think this technology is now quite obsolete. You will get much more light, and convenience, out of a CREE torch with lithium battery. These bulky torches with heavy expensive batteries are just unnecessary in my opinion.

    • Agreed. If these were $5 and came with 2 batteries then I may consider, otherwise stick to the smaller torches that are more powerful.

      • LED Lantern (this deal): 47.5 hours runtime

Can you get that from your little girly lithium lipstick lights??? ;)

        • You probably can if you run them in the dimmest mode which is probably still more light than a Dolphin. :P

Anyway, I was interested so I had a quick look and a cheap lantern battery is between 7-10 Ah so you are correct in that they do have more juice in them than a torch running off even 2x 18650s.

        • @coxymla:

You probably can if you run them in the dimmest mode…

          Doubtful at best…

        • Thats a long time. But it is a massive battery - 120WHr.
So only 40 lumens per watt. They should use a better emitter.

        • @StewBalls:
I do have a single-cell torch or two kicking around, that, I think (with at least a semi-useful lumen output), are rated for around 50 hours continuous. On lowest output modes (moonlight or very low firefly), I have at least one that is rated for 130.

If patience allows, maybe I'll actually test them out one day!

Dolphins were great torches when I was a kid, but technology has changed, and just sticking an LED in the old design is ridiculous.
    Like putting a fuel-injected engine in a Model-T Ford.

OK - bad car analogy, but two issues:
    - having such a massive torch for a mere 100 lumens is lame.
    - the batteries are expensive ($15 alkaline), negating the low purchase price for the torch. These days you want Li-Ion, or at least a set of AA NiMH.
For the same price, you can get a pair of Li-Ion cells and a charger.

    • I didn't get the black super heavy duty eveready battery, just a couple of heavy duty red eveready ones and they only cost $4 each.

carbon-zinc batteries have poor capacity, shelf life, and power. Bad economy.

Alkalines are on special for $9 at coles.

  • Already mentioned in the SCA Daily Deals thread https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/164302

  • good price, good torch, no doubt it will outlast my ledlensa and ultrafire

    • +1

For most, it will last many years, sitting in the back of the shed with a flat battery.

      • +1

lol, actually since trying it , it's now going to make a great xmas present for the bro inlaw, you guessed it I don't like him all that much

  • With the $10 credit after joining up for $5, this came to $10.75. Got one. Yes, definitely nowhere near bright as any of my retina-burning cree torches but on the flip side can leave this thing running for two days?

  • Picked myself up one this afternoon. First one I got, took home and didn't think about it until going to put the battery in. Somebody had put the Xenon torch in the LED box. Had to take it back and swap it over. Guess there might be someone out there who picked up a LED model at Xenon price.
