Portable aircon possibly reverse cycle

Looking for a good portable air conditioner for this summer, if it was reverse cycle that would be even better so we can use it all year round. Thanks :)

Just my previous experience. I bought a fairly expensive portable thinking it would be good enough for my room, was average, and had to be sitting pretty close. Took it back and spent the bit more on a proper airconditioner and it easily does the room and the joining room just through a door.

    • Thanks for your input , I'm renting so buying an air conditioner to install isn't really an option for me unfortunately. Would you say the portable air con is just as good as an air cooler? (One of the ones you add water and ice to)

Ah I see. Probably better than those air coolers, with mine the air in the room just wasn't evenly cool and corners were still quite warm. My room is 4x5m and I paid about $700 for the aircon if I remember correctly (had the tube to go out the window)

        • Which model was that? (If you remember) :)

@Hipmumma: ah no idea on the model sorry, I think the brand started with an O. Omega? Orion? something like that

        • @jumpo:

          Ok thankyou :)

Portable air cons are definitely better than air coolers. For one thing evaporative air coolers don't work well on humid days. But not as good as fixed air cons for various reasons: no split heat exchange unit, pumping out hot air also sucks in warm air, have to drain condensation water now and then, noisy because motor is in unit, and so forth. But you knew that and you have no choice.

I also had no choice so I bought a Dimplex reverse cycle a couple of years back. It's ok I guess, better than nothing. I'm not sure they make that model any more so I won't name it. What I've found is there is a lot of variability between models even from the same manufacturer. You just have to try to pick one that has good reports and hope for the best.

Problem with the idea of this is that you can't just make heat disappear, it has to go somewhere or into something..
If you are just pumping the air back into the room the net effect will be an increase in temperature, need an outlet to outside - hence the problem - portable yet connected to the outside?

    • The expensive ones have a large tube thingy that goes out the window to pump the hot air out :)

  • how long are you planning on renting wherever you are?

is negotiating with the landlord to go halves in installing a reverse cycle an option?

personally I would choose this option if possible. small amount of money to pay for a lot of comfort.

    I have a 4.5KW Mitsubishi installed for $1200.

$600 over the last 2 winters and summers well worth it. even if I cant take it with me when I move,
