Bought a new 50" to 60" TV recently? Provide a comment about it if you would be so kind.

Looking at a 50" to 60" smart TV for the lounge room under $2000.

Maybe just me, but I'm finding it difficult to gather reviews for some of the major player models. I'm hoping others who have been in the same boat this year could comment on their new TV (or another) for any or all of these:

  • TV model & price
  • sound quality (I know you can get an amp and speakers, but what is it like straight from the TV?)
  • motion blur (will watch the footy on this and read some TVs are not so good at fast scenes??)
  • overall picture quality (in your eyes)
  • pros and cons

To note, I have been looking at the
Panasonic AS700a
Samsung HU7000W
Sony W800B

these are just links to get an idea of the model

    TV Model and Price - Samsung UA60EH6000 Series 6 60 Inch - About 1.5k?

Sound Quality - Tinny out of the box when used with stand. Wall mounted sounds a lot better, must have something to do with the speaker position and sound reflecting from the wall. Suspect this will be the same with most TV's with rear facing speakers. Mounted the sound quality is good enough to not bother with a receiver + speakers.

Motion Blur - Never had issues on this or any of my past TVs, source resolution is a lot more important. If you are watching footy on Seven nothing can make it look good.

Picture Quality - Definitely happy with it.

Pros and Cons - Size mainly. An entertainment unit under 1.8m in length will not look good.

      agree on series 6 Samsung
got one fore 2 years, no issues

      u can get a 55 inch for around 1-1.2k
I think the new model is around the corner so the 2014 are reducing in price

      • The 2014 as in series 7?

Good to hear the TV is still going strong

        • I think he meant all the 2014 models, they do seem pretty cheap now, I think there is a posted deal on one from DS.

A TV should arguably last for a minimum of 5-10 years. The Samsung I referred to in my post was a replacement that I wrangled out of Samsung under the Australian Consumer Law.

I had a 59 inch Plasma which I purchased in 2011 and it died at the start of 2013. As Samsungs only come with a 1 year warranty, it was out of that period but I mentioned to them that under the Australian Consumer Law the warranty period shouldn't be limited to 1 year as the general expectation is that a TV should last 5-10 years seeing as they cost upwards of $1,000.

Samsung agreed and sent out a technician to verify that the TV was indeed faulty from a manufacturing fault and sent out a new TV two weeks later and removed the old one. :)

Haven't bought extended warranty on anything since 2011 for precisely this reason.

        • @iampoor:

Yeah it's pathetic how nearly all TVs have 1 year warranty.

Went to the shop today, I think it is between a Sony and Samsung. I played with the Samsung app menu and was surprised how fast it was. I heard it was slow but this was anything but.

Overall I was impressed with both but realise Sammy has the better picture. But there is a bit of a price difference which may make Sony the winner here. Will check out prices over this week.

        • @Oldbugger:

I have tried both manufacturers and they are ok. Just remember that the settings in the shop are deceiving for PQ. I think any TV from either brand if properly calibrated will yield more than acceptable results for the majority of people.

I don't want to pay for someone to come in and calibrate my TV so what I do is google the model number and look for calibration settings on the internet…has worked well so far :)

Sony W850 - got it for $1660 with extended warranty.

3D sucks. Utter shit. But I didn't buy it intending to use it at all, sooooo….

Sound Quality - TV is wall mounted, and speakers have options for table top or wall mount (they are down firing, so I guess it makes a difference).
Only used the internal speakers once, and it sounded a lot better than my old TV. Definitely good enough to watch a game.

Motion Blur - Hate the stuff. It looks smooth, but I typically have it turned off. Plays havoc on South Park, that's for sure! Works as it should though.

PQ - Awesome. I bought it for a gaming tv, and it hasn't failed to deliver. Blacks could be better, but I have nothing to really compare them to except for the wall behind the tv. Love watching it.

Pros and Cons - Size. It's huge until it aint! Now I feel like 70" wasn't that unrealistic…

    • Don't need 3D so that's fine.

Sound quality, I've figured since they all seem to have issues (except for the Pany) I'll get a sound bar.

Motion blur - can you explain this a bit more. How is it when watching fast paced action or footy with it off? I just don't want a TV that is choppy (I can't think of a better word)

  • Got this for $698 in 2011 and its very good for its price.
