    Typically the cheaper the printer, the more expensive the cartridges

  • This is actually a good price for a PCL printer. At this price printers are usually GDI.

    With PCL, the printer itself has the smarts and does the processing. This means that the PC doesn't have to use its CPU cycles to process as much of the print job. It also means the printer driver is less bloated, and it's easier for the manufacturer to create drivers for future operating systems (and alternative OS's such as Mac, Linux etc).
