WhatsApp Is Not Free Anymore

I have just installed Whatsapp to my new Nokia Lumia 530 (bought from Woolies $39.50). After installation completed, I got the following message :- "welcome to your 1 year free service. After that will be $0.99 per year". I thought Whatsapp is a free service and how do I pay after 1 year as I have'nt provided Whatsapp with my credit card information?

      Not true… sort of…

According to the website, they do claim you have to pay a subscription, but I've been using it for a few years now and I can assure you I have not been asked to pay.

      • I found this in Whatsapp's website http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/whatsapp/218a0eb…

WhatsApp Messenger is a smartphone messenger available for Windows Phone and other smartphones. WhatsApp uses your 3G/EDGE or Wi-Fi (when available) to message with friends and family. Switch from SMS to WhatsApp to send and receive messages, pictures, voice messages, and video messages. First year FREE! ($0.99 USD/year after)

generally I've gotten messages towards the end of the "free" period that say they're extending it for me

    • yeah I get this message yearly

  • They rarely charge you…
I've just used Telstra credit to add on a few years but that's with Android

I've used it for a few years and have never been charged as well. But I would pay $0.99/year to use it if I had to which basically equates to 4 texts.

FOC/first year, 0.99c/thereafter has always been the case with WhatsApp, nothing has changed. That was part of the list of pro for the acquisition.

Whether they choose to or when they choose to do so is up to them I suppose.

  • they always extends the free period - apps like these can not really make it paid with all new options available.
And now that FB owns it - they will be gathering huge data from watsapp they will make them more than $1 per person per year..

OP seems to be ready to pay for watsapp even today - and other people are? Why not switch to free option (viber?) if that is made paid?

  • They keeping saying extending you an extra year free just to keep them look valuable. If they start charging it, everyone will switch to viber

  • Never had that before after using it for 2-3 years. Only time I paid was when I purchased it on App Store

  • They do charge a yearly fee HOWEVER if you paid for the app before they started charging this fee, you have a lifetime subscription. I borrowed an iPhone for a while and had to pay for the app, which granted me a lifetime subscription. I used to get the messaages on Android saying that my subscription had been extended however since using an iPhone and buying the app then moving back to Android, I have not had any message. I believe this is how it works, I may be wrong. On the Payment Info screen my Service Expiration says "Lifetime".

  • Anyone who purchased it from the App Store will never have to pay. I got a message telling me that the last time I installed it.
