Olympus 15mm F8.0 Body Cap Lens $49.95 @ Ted's

70

Teds have the BCL1580 for only $49.95 which is cheap for local stock, the next cheapest on staticice is $59 at DigiDirect.
Its not an amazing lens, but a fun one none the less

Allowing instant shooting, the 15mm lens is great for when you need to take that split second shot during the day.

Designed as a lens that substitutes for a body cap, the new 15mm f8.0 Body Cap Lens features a 3 element in 3 group wide-angle design. A small lever enables manual focus and it has an infinity setting as well. Designed to accentuate the effects of Art Filters, the fixed aperture optical design creates sharply focused centre regions with softer edge details.

I don't see why you would want to replace your body cap with a lens that isn't even that great. You might as well just keep a standard prime on it then.

A standard prime still takes up more space than a body cap lens ;-)

That said, I much prefer the Olympus 9mm f/8 body cap lens - it's similarly small/thin, a wider field of view, offers better image quality, and can still be purchased for sub $100…

      • Yeah, I know, but it's not a question of whether this has a function or not, I'm sure it does, it's whether this is worth paying for or not. $50 isn't a small amount and could contribute handsomely to an extra lens purchase, a filter…etc.

As for me, I just never take off my standard prime, it acts as my lens cap. They're not even that big these days, if you're taking your camera somewhere, you're probably going to take a standard prime with you, so might as well just keep it on the camera rather than this, this just gives you one extra thing to have to take account of and be afraid of misplacing or damaging.

        • Whilst some people will argue about the "fun factor" the 15mm body cap lens provides, I tend to agree with your reasoning that spending ≈$50 on something that isn't that great as a lens is questionable. For me, an additional issue is that it replicates a focal length that is already available in the standard kit zoom lens anyway.

The 9mm body cap lens, on the other hand, provides a wider field of view, not present on the standard zoom, and actually has pretty decent image quality for the relatively cheap price. I like to think of it as a "micro pancake" sized prime lens ;-)
And unlike many of the common primes, which create a noticeable protrusion that won't fit in most pockets, the 9mm also makes the camera pocketable. The 9mm has actually convinced me that the body cap lens idea isn't such a bad one :-)

    • If you actually use this lens with the filters you'll understand

  • I got one of these but don't really end up using it. Like paulsterio says, you might as well keep a prime on. I think I was able to match it at Ted's with JB's pricing of around $45 earlier this year.
