It's an older model (previous-gen Atom CPU), but a nice price for a full 10.1" Windows tablet.

$199 isn't a bad price. Keep in mind that the HP Stream tablets are out now and are cheaper still for a better processor, however have less RAM, storage and smaller displays. http://www.amazon.com/HP-Stream-Windows-Tablet-Personal/dp/B…

That said, I bought the 11.6'' ASUS VivoTab TF810C Tablet from Dick Smith last year when they were clearing them out. It is is very similar in specs with a digitiser and keyboard dock. It makes a great OneNote machine, but I find the dual-core Atom is just too slow to do much of anything useful. The video drivers from Intel are terrible as well, and tend to crash regularly.

Coincidently oo.com.au has refurbished VivoTab TF810C for $349, not really a bargain though. http://www.oo.com.au/ASUS-VivoTab-TF810C-1B059W-1_P237460.cf…).

    • I was looking for a Windows tablet recently. The 1 GB RAM ones are nice and cheap, but I have serious doubts about what you can actually do with one. 2 GB is already pushing it.

The recent VivoTab 8 from Amazon is nice. A tad more expensive and a smaller screen, but includes a digitiser pen, and brand new of course, if anyone's interested. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/167851

      • I'd agree with you there - that VivoTab 8 looks like fantastic value. I do think you need a digitiser to actually use a Windows Tablet (at some point you'll have to hit the desktop) - so that's a +1 there to the Asus.

    • I have the tf810c and have no issues.

  • Windows 8 has amazing memory management, dont expect overall slowdown from low ram, but do expect individual application slowdown if the app just 'wants more ram' as a general rule.

Interesting to note: when you are using Windows 8 in it's touch interface (AKA, Metro) Windows 8 will not even load the desktop environment into RAM, under the assumption that you're not going to use the desktop UI on the tablet.
Also, when you switch between metro apps, apps that are in the background have their current working state written to disk and when the user switches back to it the memory is 'reclaimed' into RAM again.

That's how Microsoft got Windows 8 to work on tablets with as little as 1GB of RAM.

  • Intel Atom Z3740 (tech from end of 2013) I already consider the slowest speed CPU I can brace myself to endure. I could not imagine going even slower than that (this). the one i'm using is already pretty slow. Would gladly pay the extra $50-100 just to keep my sanity intact. It takes me 2 to 3 seconds just to flip through relatively normal resolution png images when I am reading manga.

The pretty 10 inch IPS screen is tempting, but the insides do not hold up.

    • Yea, it's a trade-off when shopping around this price range. Bigger screen? Or more RAM? Or faster CPU? Can't have all three. That pushes it up to at least $400. Heck, if there was something at $300, I'd take it.

      • I got the ThinkPad 8 for $330 last week. Maybe you should have grabbed one of them?
