Portable external hard drive

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a portable external hard drive for Christmas. Looking for probably around 2tb of space.

I want something good quality that's going to last and pretty robust build quality as it's going to used around home and Uni

Hoping to spend up to $150 and I'd prefer buying from aus for any warranty claims.

Just gotta keep your eyes open for the deals, heaps on OzBargain all the time.

  • Yeah i've started to look right now so I can grab a good deal when it comes.

But its hard knowing whats worth buying and what isn't. I've always heard Seagate drives are horrible and aren't worth purchasing but i'm not sure if thats actually true.

No one can guarantee magnetic or semiconductor-based storage will last X amount of time. It's the nature of the fabrication process and mechanical moving parts; there will always be duds with every manufacturer and someone will have to get them.

People fail to understand how complex a hard drive actually is. We're talking about a 2mm by 1mm magnet flying at an unbelievabile height of just 51 microns over platters that are packed like sardines, several thousand times per minute (insane speeds), to read and write. Something that complicated is practically begging to fail.

To give an apt analogy: Imagine flying a Boeing 747 just a few metres off the ground in a continuous and very tight circle without crashing, for days on end.

Companies throw around marketing jargon such as MBTF, TLER, "NAS-certified", "24/7 Operation", "Enterprise-level"; but at the end of the day, these products are all subject to a quality assurance process that can only leverage so much money and time per unit sold, and they ship by the hundreds of millions annually; there is no way lifetime guarantees can be given for hard drives that now realistically cost less than $100 to manufacture.

Just be on your toes and regularly look at your drive's S.M.A.R.T data and know what signs to look for in a failing HDD/SSD.

Get something drop-proof rated. Transcend 2TB.

And like Gunther said, a hard drive deal is a weekly occurrence on OzBargain (sometimes daily). Something good is bound to come along between now and Christmas.

I've always heard Seagate drives are horrible and aren't worth purchasing but i'm not sure if thats actually true.

Individual experiences are meaningless and objective, mass studies on manufacturer-specific failure rates are difficult to come by.

Assumptions like that are inconclusive at best.

  • What the best deal on USB 3 external SSD portable drive?
    Boxing day and on?

  • seagate is pretty good - have not had prob and for $87 for 2TB https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/seagate-2t…
