Small Light Car (Used) for P Plater $10000 Budget No More than 40,000 Km?

Need advice/suggestions for what model to buy, that is economical to run/maintain. Must be small light car category not done more than 40000 km, I have a list of about 8 models, and am going round in circles reading reviews about the models, some conflicting. Currently know only about YARIs good reputation. I don't think Yaris would be the only one, so any suggestions? Budget is no more than $10,000 and I get this feeling for that price, we may have to settle for an older model which is why so important to get a reliable brand. The names I have in mind: (Toyota yaris already known), Hyundai Getz, Daihatsu, Suzuki, Nissan, Ford, Holden… enough to give migraine. Any suggestion is appreciated. Am I being unrealistic looking for 40,000odometer at $10,000 limit?

  • I bet you could get this Yaris for 10K http://www.governmentauctions.com.au/vehicle.aspx?number=429…. Of course you would have to check it out beforehand. Condition report states some panel work done in the past but for the kms and expected price, worth a look!

  • Thanks for referring me to this site, never knew about it, only know carsales.com. But I live in Melbourne, so a nono? Will try and see if there is the same site in Victoria.

    • Sorry, I just went by your profile which says NSW. Hmm.. not much at the Vic auctions unfortunately.

Don't lock yourself into exactly 40k or under on the odo. There are some cars with 80k on them that are in better condition than some with 20k. When buying used be a bit flexible, colour, style, etc… get the best car for the $.
Avoid small European cars … they are not very durable, expensive to service and parts are usually over priced.
Small cars… you cannot beat Japanese or Korean.

  • Extend your budget to 13K and you have a Kia rio brand new with 7 years warranty

    • this^^^

new 2015 model rio coming but its just a lite reskin ie. new bumper, tail lights and stuff

the current 2014 is the best as far as warranty, engine, interior and feature go but be aware you dont get the better 1.6 gdi engine

this is the only 6 spd manual in the price range?

if its auto you need choose something else, 4 spd doesnt cut it

only bad thing about kia is that fuel econ is not that good IMO

  • I should have mentioned, it must be an auto and no more than the 1.5 litre since I think once it hits 1.5 litre 1.6 they are small but no more classified 'light'. For that reason, a Toyota Corolla for eg is already considered is considered too big and not fuel economical. Most important is ABS brakes and airbags, I was surprised to read Car Advice now relegating the Kia to below Yaris where features are concerned, and now I am seriously going to read up more about Kia maybe visit the dealers.

    • this is important information you leave out because automatic is pretty much a $2,000 option

i'm also surprised to hear you think that cars lack 'abs and airbags'

this is 2015… every car made in the last 10-15-20 yrs have them, especially in this tough segment

Not the Proton Jumbuck Ute lol - airbags aren't even an option.
