SCA Jumpstart - 900 Amp, Heavy Duty $64.90 - Includes LED Light & 2A USB Port for Tablets/Phones

790

I bought one of these last week for $92 on special - now its a whopping $27 cheaper (SCA have automagically credited $27 to my account).

Great as a long lasting light during power outages, or camping, and for blowing up air mattresses etc (with a separate air pump - not included). Reading reviews, a lot of people use them for powering small fridges overnight while camping etc.

12 month warranty. My last one (smaller SCA 600amp) lasted 4 years. Often used it for charging or jumpstarting my JetSki after many months sitting idle.

SmartCharger means you can leave on charge all the time until needed - off mains power OR off car accessory port (charge while you drive).

The battery inside this unit is worth around $50 just by itself.

A jumpstart battery pack is an incredibly useful tool for those terrible situations when you turn the ignition key and nothing happens due to a flat battery. Whether the battery is on its way out, or even if the problem is as simple as the lights being left on in the car, the SCA 900 Amp Heavy Duty Jumpstart is sure to get you out of more than one tricky situation. Being a 900 Amp jumpstart battery pack it is ideal for jump starting small to medium sized 4 cylinder cars. This jumpstart pack is simply pre-charged via a 240v wall socket and can then be left in the car or garage for when needed. When further charging of the battery pack is required, both visual and audible warnings are given, meaning you’ll never be left with both a dead battery and dead jumpstart pack. Additionally, this jumpstart pack has twin 12v accessory outlets, which provides a power source for 12v powered items and will remove the strain off the car battery.

Can you put price in title?

Ah sorry guys, I hate that too, my bad!

$65 if anyone can't do the maths..being NYE we shouldn't be expected to think about such things, unless it's at uncle Dans

  • +2

Anyone know what the CCA (cold crank amps) rating of these are? An i30 diesel requires 600 CCA .. was just wondering whether or not this unit is sufficient.

    • -8

Why would you need to jump start an i30 diesel? :p

        I'm not understanding your joke / non-joke ?

        • +7

          @AMLagonda:
I thought the issue would be with the battery .. not with the car itself..

        • +5

@AMLagonda: Still not sure if you're joking or if you actually have zero knowledge of how a car works….

        • +6

          @pmupsinep:

          Yes obviously a tool.

Every car, no matter how new or reliable can have battery problems.

BTW I have the aldi one of these, very handy. Also great to help others, pumping bike tyres and charging phones while camping.

          @AMLagonda:

So, do you think I can charge my car battery using all the eneloops that I bought? or even run it?

        • +1

@JepunK: Hyundai car batteries don't need charging, ever. They're that good. Obviously you must be a hoon using up your battery and speeding too much.

        • -4

          @AMLagonda:
Give it a rest you guys….

  • -5

This should start anything fine, as long as the car in question actually starts straight away.

  • Can this fully charge a car battery

    • You will need something like this one depending on the size of your battery:

      http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Proje…

      • Looks similar to a defibrillator- ouch

      • Kmart have one similar to this (12v 2AMP) for just $25 which is a steal.. cheapest I could find at SCA was around $50.

Although the Kmart one might not be a smart charger, so would need to remember to unplug after a couple of days.

    • Negative (in reply to original question)

    • Is that a question or a statement?

    • Yes.. Kind of.
When you connect batteries in parallel (as you do when jump starting - don't connect in series or you will double the voltage to 24v) the 2 batteries try and even out/average to a common charge/voltage.

This is why you should never mix new and old batteries in a remote control, as the new batteries will try and "charge" the old ones (even if they are not rechargeable).

But this works ok with a rechargeable battery. If you connect this jump starter to a flat battery (being left flat can damage the old battery) it will pump charge into the old battery.
It may take 3-4 cycles of leaving the jump starter connected for a day, then recharging for a day (rinse and repeat) to charge the old battery (as long as it's not screwed).

      • Actually my top line above should have said "No.. Kind of."
If you meant from a single charge, like a high capacity battery pack can fully charge a mobile phone, then no. The car battery has way, way more capacity than the jump start battery.

    • No. Neither can eneloops ;) (I suppose in sufficient quantities…)

It's to get your car going and the engine can charge the rest for you, assuming that the battery still holds charge.

  • Op u should be able to get the difference in price back if u have a sca club card

Nevermind just re read ur post, u got it anyway, doh!

    • Sure did… wonder if I can double-dip via my credit card price protection ?

      • +2

Hehe if u did that'd surely make u a 'Grand Master Ozbargainer'

  • hmm i think i need the 1200amp version :(

    • +1

Dont bother with the 1200 - get the 1900A as its only a few $$ more than the 1200.

  • +1

2 USB ports. This is coming camping to power my usb fan and mug warmer.

    • Sorry it only has 1 USB port (on the rear, with its own ON/OFF switch, but at least its 2AMP not 500mA)

It has 2x accessory (cigarette lighter style) sockets on the front of the unit.

FYI - Standard shipping on website says $11 but the same item is on sale on eBay and standard shipping is about $7.

  • +1

How is this compared to the xiomni 10800 powerbank?

    • About 60% more capacity at 17,000mAH
Won't fit in your pocket tho :)

  • Anyone know the capacity of the battery inside this jumpstarter?
I'm wondering how long it would run lights or a camping fridge

    • I think it's 17AH (17,000 mAH?)

      • +1

I had a look in store. You are correct.

17AH is about 204Wh. It could probably run a small 50L waeco fridge in ideal conditions for around 20 hours.
You'd want to charge it during the day.

  • Looks about the same as the KMart jump starter/air compressor/light/usb power that is usually sold for $60/$65

    http://upload.ozbargain.com/2012/08/30/9289_jump-start-air-c…

    • Similar, but that's the old style case (looks like my 4yr old SCA one) with incandescent bulb, and really short jump cables.
The new SCA one has LED light and double length cables.
If I'm near Kmart today I will have a look.

  • These work great for anyone with an EQ Mount for their telescope! I used mine with my synscan eq6 http://ca.skywatcher.com/_english/02_mounts/02_detail.php?si…

If you've purchased this particular jump starter model could you please check the max PSI on the pump? I'd like to see if it'd be able to pressurise bottle rockets. Many thanks!

    • Yes me too, the (jump starter) supplied cable to recharge it from a car accessories socket fits perfectly in reverse to power my Celestron computerised mount from the jump starter accessories socket. Saves using 8x AA batteries.

  • good product, just be prepared for it to beep incessantly when you leave it in the garage and not use it for a couple of months. It won't stop until you recharge it.

    • +1

      It's screaming because it's dying..

      • can you turn the beeping off?

        • Smother it with a pillow…

        • +1

Yes. By charging the jump starter unit.

I was serious about it dying. If you let these run flat and left flat for a while, they simply won't take a charge. You could leave it on charge for days, and it would still be dead or almost dead.
          Car batteries do the same.

If you want to get maximum life (years) out of these jump starters, recharge them soon after use (rather than using multiple times over weeks before recharging) and once charged, even if you haven't used it, plug it in to charge for a few hours once a month or 2.

Its a small inconvenience, but makes your purchase last longer.

        • @systmworks:
That's fine but if you use it when camping you won't be able to charge it. I'd rather not have it beeping at a campsite.

        • +1

          @megaphat:
Ah yes.. I see your point. I was more responding to the top comment about leaving in the garage for months.

          A couple of options:

          • there are little solar panel kits that can be used to put some charge back during the day (designed for maintenance of batteries, so wont recharge much in a day)

          • you can plug into your car/boat accessory socket, using the cable supplied with the unit. Even if just for a few mins to feed enough juice in to stop the low battery alarm, and then charge it via solar or from the car while driving (or idling if not driving).

However if you need to do that a lot (eg not driving far while camping), you would be better off with a portable gene. If you have one of those camping as well, you could use it to recharge the jumpstarter pack during the day, and use the jumpstart kit at night when you dont want to run a noisy generator.

EDIT - found some solar chargers on the SCA website.

          $23.88
          http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-2…

          $84.15
          http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-1…

        • @systmworks:
Trouble with solar panels is that they're fairly expensive. You'd want at least a 20w panel to charge it in a day. Closest panel at supercheap would be 20w for $160.

But that doesn't help when the battery starts beeping at night…

        • @megaphat:
Yeah.. in that case.. carry it 100m into the woods.. so you cant hear it from camp :)
And recharge it in the morning from car.

  • Says it's sold out on the Supercheap page. Glad i ordered mine yesterday.

Refreshed page and it's no longer sold out? Weird…..

  • +1

Be aware folks, I looked at both this one and the Repco one that's the same size two or three years ago. (The repco one regularly comes down to $99 in sales.) They (both) contain a SLA (sealed lead acid) battery, which do not have great life spans. I noticed this one didn't have any easy way to open it, whereas the repco one has screws. I then saw this one somewhere, that someone had tried to open - it's basically glued closed - and opening it destroys it.

So I bought the repco one. I haven't used it for months, but think the battery has now died. If so that means it lasted about two years.

My point being: You can replace the battery in the repco one, saving… I don't know, $30 (or more?) when it fails.

I believe the repco cables are longer also.

    • +3

It is normal for jumpstarters (and many motorbikes, UPS's, electric wheelchairs, airplanes etc) to use VRLA/SLA batteries. Dont want the acid to leak out if it is not upright.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VRLA_battery

My 4 year old SCA unit, and the new one in this deal, both have large, easily removable panels on the rear which exposes the entire battery, cables, and controller board.
