Android or Windows tablet (I have a pile of Amazon and Play Store apps!)

I was given a Dell Venue Pro 8" Windows tablet but still in wrapper from JB. Never used one before but it would be nice to use for watching Netflix in bed and occasional net surfing and some apps. So an 8" to 10", 16GB with expansion slot (1.5GB RAM memory minimum) and >1.2Ghz memory would suffice. I can't see myself using Office software on these small things, but how would I know?

Issue I see is that I have an android mobile and have heaps of apps on Play Store and also on Amazon.

Would I be right in thinking I should go for a android device then? If so, which one to swap it over to? Or should I keep the device (I do have a Windows laptop if that matters)?

Thanks.

  • Can't help you on the preference side of things, however for the Office software, you do know of Google's web based equivalent yes? Log in via drive.google.com and you can access them straight away. Chances are all the functions you want are available.

    • Thanks Minty for the reply.

  • Idk how good it will run but maybe try bluestacks on the windows tablet.

That's android emulation, it will run terrible.

Running android apps natively in Chrome — much faster performance since there's no ARM translation required.

Right now I'm using a Surface Pro, it can run both Android and Windows apps, the best of both worlds.

      • How do you you android apps in chrome? I new it was comeing but didnt know it was out now.

      • Which surface pro version Scrimshaw? Link? I would prefer a surface pro but think the price would put me off.

I'm getting a headache comparing all these tablets. I started looking at Galaxy Tabs as they have an external (micro)sd card slot. But there are so many versions. I think 1.5GHz and 16GB would be ample.

Then I'm wondering where is it best to buy from (ie. Amazon or local). Hmm…

1st gen SP Pro with backlit type cover combo, was a hand me down from a relative when he upgraded to Surface Pro 3.
He paid $600 for it when the price dropped from poor sales. As a tablet, it's pretty darn heavy, the battery life is short and its unwieldy to hold using 1 hand, and I only use it in place of a laptop. It's great for productivity and taking notes using OneNote.

My ASUS MemoPad 10 FHD is still my go-to tab for mobile gaming, reading and in-bed surfing.

The Surface Pro 3 however is much more improved and thinner as well, but at 12 inches it still isn't as portable as a 8" tablet.

  • OK, thanks. I think I'll go for the Galaxy 10.1 @ $248 http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/samsung-galax…
