Not a rep, just saw it mentioned on one of the podcasts on msdn.channel9.com and made unattributed quotes from the syncfusion website ;). I guess it's funded by corporate users of their products. They're pretty much forced to do this after Microsoft made a free community edition of the full blown Visual Studio 2013, although they were already quite generous with their hobbyist license as rexii2300 demonstrates.

Have been testing their HTML/Javascript product on a hobbyist license and support is phenomenal. My first support tick was a question regarding how I need my data charted and I wanted some pointer. Got a reply back saying they will mock it up for me. 24 hours later and it's all done along with explanations!
Since then I've raised support tickets multiple times and I've always list my questions and their support always responded to each in a professional manner. Was testing this vs Telerik and Telerik just told me to google instead!
I dont know how they are funding it but it's amazing stuff!
Can anyone confirm if the key/community license is reusable? I want to install this on multiple systems (at work and home). Or is it just a one-time use thing?
